Best Endpoint Protection Platforms (2026): Top 10 Compared

Updated October 2026By StatWharf Editorial10 vendorsMethodology

Endpoint protection platforms (EPP) stop malware, ransomware and exploits on laptops, servers and mobile devices, and most now bundle endpoint detection and response (EDR). The ten platforms here split three ways. CrowdStrike Falcon, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, SentinelOne Singularity and Trend Vision One are broad platforms that extend from the endpoint into identity, cloud and XDR. Sophos, ESET, Bitdefender GravityZone and WithSecure Elements target small and mid-sized organisations with one console and optional managed services. ThreatDown and Huntress package endpoint protection for lean IT teams and managed service providers, with Huntress built around a 24/7 managed SOC.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

Endpoint protection platforms secure laptops, desktops, servers and mobile devices against malware, ransomware and exploits from a centrally managed agent. Buyers also search for the category as EPP, endpoint security software, business antivirus or EDR. This page compares platforms that install an agent on endpoints and stop threats there. Network firewalls, email security gateways and standalone vulnerability scanners are outside its scope.

The ten platforms compared here fall into three groups. CrowdStrike Falcon, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, SentinelOne Singularity and Trend Vision One are broad platforms that extend from endpoints into identity, cloud and XDR. Sophos, ESET, Bitdefender and WithSecure serve small and mid-sized organisations with one console and optional managed services. ThreatDown and Huntress package endpoint protection for lean IT teams and managed service providers. All pricing notes were checked in October 2026. Huntress Managed EDR

smbhuntress.com ↗
Consider forSmall and mid-sized businesses and managed service providers that need endpoint detection and response watched around the clock without hiring their own SOC analysts
Pricing notesHuntress lists Managed EDR at $8.99 per endpoint per month MSRP, with per-unit rates falling as volume rises and the 24/7 SOC included. The standard term is 12 months. MSPs have no seat minimum and are billed monthly in arrears; direct and reseller purchases carry a 50-seat minimum per product (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateA human reviews every alert before it reaches the customer, and Huntress manages Microsoft Defender Antivirus at no additional cost

Huntress Managed EDR pairs a lightweight agent for Windows, macOS and Linux with a 24/7 security operations centre that Huntress describes as AI-assisted and human-led. Huntress states that a person reviews every alert before it reaches the customer, and that deployment takes under 20 minutes without removing existing antivirus.

The service watches for abuse of legitimate applications and processes that attackers use to persist unnoticed, and monitors for early signs of ransomware activity. When a threat is confirmed, the SOC contains it, removes the attacker's foothold and sends plain-English remediation guidance with full process lineage. Huntress also manages Microsoft Defender Antivirus, applying recommended configurations and watching for risky exclusions, at no added cost.

Huntress is channel-first. Managed service providers handle deployment and escalations for their clients, resellers and referral partners support self-managed customers, and organisations can buy direct above the 50-seat minimum.

Potential strengths

  • Published MSRP with 24/7 SOC included, not an add-on
  • Runs alongside existing antivirus, including Microsoft Defender

Trade-offs

  • 50-seat minimum for direct buyers

How to choose a vendor

Decide between EPP alone, EDR or managed detection

Prevention-only tiers block known and unknown malware but leave investigation to the buyer. EDR adds telemetry, attack timelines and response actions, which need someone to read the alerts. CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, ESET, Sophos and ThreatDown sell managed detection and response (MDR) tiers, and Huntress includes a 24/7 SOC in its base price. Teams without analysts on call should price the managed option from the start.

Count devices the way the vendor bills them

Billing units differ. CrowdStrike and SentinelOne price per device or endpoint per year, Microsoft prices per user, ESET sells packs of devices, and Huntress lists a monthly per-endpoint MSRP with a 50-seat minimum for direct buyers. Servers, mobile devices and cloud workloads are often licensed separately, so list every device class before comparing quotes.

Check what the Microsoft licence already covers

Microsoft 365 Business Premium includes Defender for Business, and Microsoft 365 E5 includes Defender for Endpoint Plan 2. Organisations on those plans already own an EDR agent. Huntress manages Microsoft Defender Antivirus at no extra cost, and several platforms here can run alongside Defender. Confirm whether a second agent replaces or complements what is already licensed.

Test rollback, isolation and operating system coverage

Ransomware rollback, device isolation and remote shell differ by tier. SentinelOne lists one-click rollback, ThreatDown restores files up to 7 days after an attack, and Sophos CryptoGuard reverts encrypted files. Confirm Linux, macOS, legacy Windows and mobile support for the estate, and run a trial on a representative group of machines before buying.

Frequently asked questions

What is an endpoint protection platform?

An endpoint protection platform (EPP) is software installed on laptops, desktops, servers and mobile devices to prevent malware, ransomware, exploits and fileless attacks. Modern platforms replace signature-only antivirus with machine learning and behavioural detection, and add device control, firewall management and central policy. Most vendors now sell EPP and EDR in the same agent.

What is the difference between EPP and EDR?

EPP focuses on prevention: blocking threats before they run. EDR records endpoint activity, detects suspicious behaviour that prevention missed, and gives responders tools to investigate, isolate devices and roll back changes. CrowdStrike adds EDR at Falcon Enterprise, ThreatDown at its Advanced bundle and Sophos in Sophos EDR. SentinelOne includes detection and response from Singularity Complete, and Microsoft includes EDR in Defender for Business and Defender for Endpoint Plan 2.

How much does endpoint protection cost per device?

Published list prices on this page run from $3.00 per user per month for Microsoft Defender for Business to $184.99 per device per year for CrowdStrike Falcon Enterprise. SentinelOne lists $179.99 and $229.99 per endpoint per year, ESET PROTECT Core is $274.50 a year for 5 devices, and Huntress lists $8.99 per endpoint per month including its SOC. Sophos, Bitdefender, Trend, WithSecure and ThreatDown require a quote or online configurator.

Is Microsoft Defender good enough for business endpoint protection?

Microsoft Defender for Business and Defender for Endpoint provide next-generation protection, attack surface reduction and EDR, and are included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium and E5. Organisations already on those licences may not need a second agent. Many buyers instead add monitoring: Huntress manages Defender Antivirus and watches endpoints with a 24/7 SOC, and several other platforms can run alongside Defender.

What is managed detection and response, and do small businesses need it?

Managed detection and response (MDR) is a service in which the vendor's analysts monitor EDR alerts around the clock, investigate them and contain threats. It suits organisations without staff to read alerts at night or at weekends. Falcon Complete, SentinelOne's MDR service, Sophos MDR, ESET PROTECT Premium, ThreatDown Elite and Huntress Managed EDR all include managed monitoring.

Which endpoint protection platforms support Linux and macOS?

According to the vendor pages checked, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Sophos, Bitdefender, WithSecure and Huntress cover Windows, macOS and Linux, and WithSecure adds Android, iOS and ChromeOS. CrowdStrike lists Android and iOS protection in every bundle. Buyers should confirm specific distributions and versions in each vendor's system requirements.

Can endpoint protection recover files after a ransomware attack?

Several platforms include rollback. SentinelOne lists one-click rollback and remediation, ThreatDown restores files that were encrypted or modified up to 7 days after an attack, Sophos CryptoGuard reverts maliciously encrypted files, Bitdefender restores files from backup copies, and WithSecure lists rollback after ransomware. Rollback complements, and does not replace, offline backups.

How were these endpoint protection platforms selected and checked?

Candidates came from buyer searches for endpoint protection platforms and from vendor websites. Each product, documentation and pricing page cited here was fetched on 25 October 2026. Prices are quoted only where the vendor shows them. No product was tested hands-on, and no entry is vendor-confirmed. Every entry has a dated source check, so the order follows content sequence and is not a ranking.
