Best Network Security Software (2026): Top 10 Compared
Network security software inspects and controls traffic between users, sites, applications and the internet. The ten products below fall into two groups. Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, Cisco, Check Point, Sophos and Netgate sell next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) that run on hardware appliances, virtual machines or public cloud instances, with threat services added by subscription. Zscaler, Netskope, Cato Networks and Cloudflare deliver security from their own cloud networks as a security service edge (SSE) or secure access service edge (SASE) platform. Several firewall vendors also sell a SASE service, so the two groups overlap.

Network security software protects an organisation’s traffic as it moves between users, devices, offices, data centres, cloud services and the internet. It decides what is allowed through, inspects allowed traffic for malware, exploits and data leaving the business, and records what happened. Common functions include stateful firewalling, intrusion prevention, application control, URL and DNS filtering, sandboxing, VPN or zero trust access, and data loss prevention.
The market splits between next-generation firewalls and cloud-delivered services. Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, Cisco, Check Point, Sophos and Netgate sell firewalls that run on appliances, virtual machines or public cloud, with threat protection added through subscriptions. Zscaler, Netskope, Cato Networks and Cloudflare deliver security from their own global networks as SSE or SASE, which suits remote users and branches that connect straight to the internet. Several firewall vendors also sell SASE services. Device and bandwidth monitoring tools are covered separately on the network monitoring software page.
The comparison covers ten products. Details come from each vendor’s public product, pricing, licensing and documentation pages, checked on 13 October 2026.

Cato Networks sells a cloud SASE platform that combines wide-area networking and security. Cato describes SASE as converging SD-WAN, a cloud network and SSE functions such as firewall-as-a-service, CASB, DLP, SWG and ZTNA into one cloud-native service, and its product is built around that design.
The core is a global private backbone of more than 85 points of presence in regional data centres, linked by multiple carriers. Cato applies optimisation to all traffic crossing the backbone, including voice, video and legacy applications, and routes SaaS traffic to the point of presence nearest the application.
Sites connect through the Cato Socket, an SD-WAN device that aggregates fibre, cable, xDSL and cellular links with application-aware QoS, dynamic path selection and automated high availability. It can also route over MPLS during a migration. Remote users connect through a client for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Linux, or clientless access. Digital experience monitoring uses synthetic probing and AI to find user experience problems without installing sensors.
Cato states that the platform can be deployed gradually to replace point products and legacy network services.
Potential strengths
- Cato Socket edge device handles link aggregation, QoS and failover at each site
- Digital experience monitoring with no extra sensors to deploy
Trade-offs
- No published prices
- Best value depends on routing most site and user traffic through Cato's network

Cloudflare One is Cloudflare's single-vendor SASE platform. It combines workspace security services, sold on per-user plans, with network services, including Cloudflare WAN and Firewall, that are priced separately.
The per-user plans cover zero trust network access to self-hosted, SaaS and non-web resources such as SSH; a secure web gateway with network, DNS and HTTP filtering; digital experience monitoring; network flow monitoring; CASB; and DLP. Users connect through a device client that can be self-enrolled or deployed by MDM, and private resources connect through connector software that needs no public IP address. Cloudflare states that paid plans carry a 100% uptime SLA.
The plans page lists three tiers. The free plan suits teams under 50 users and enterprise proofs of concept. Pay-as-you-go suits teams over 50 users with narrow SSE needs that do not require enterprise support. The Contract plan is for organisations building toward a full SASE or workspace security deployment and adds full DLP, unlimited CASB integrations, email security and professional services as add-ons. Log Explorer is free for the first 10 GB, then $1 per GB per month on free and pay-as-you-go plans.
Potential strengths
- Free and self-serve plans allow testing before a contract
- Connector software needs no publicly routable IP and no VM infrastructure
Trade-offs
- Free and pay-as-you-go plans include only limited DLP profiles and two read-only CASB integrations
- Network firewall and WAN services are not in the per-user plans
- Product reference

Frequently asked questions
What is network security software?
Network security software inspects and controls traffic moving between users, devices, sites, applications and the internet. The main types are next-generation firewalls, which add intrusion prevention, application control, URL filtering and malware analysis to a traditional firewall, and cloud SSE or SASE services, which deliver the same controls from a provider's network for remote users and branches.
How much does network security software cost?
Two products on this page publish prices. Netgate pfSense Plus costs $129, $399 or $799 per instance per year depending on the support tier, and pfSense CE is free. Cloudflare's Zero Trust plans are free for up to 50 users and $7 per user per month on pay-as-you-go. Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, Cisco, Check Point, Sophos, Zscaler, Netskope and Cato quote.
What is the difference between an NGFW and SASE?
A next-generation firewall inspects traffic at a location, such as a data centre or branch, on an appliance or virtual machine. SASE delivers networking and security from cloud points of presence, combining SD-WAN with SWG, CASB, ZTNA and firewall-as-a-service. Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, Cisco and Check Point sell both; Zscaler, Netskope, Cato and Cloudflare are cloud-first.
Why do firewall quotes vary so much for similar hardware?
Hardware is usually a minority of the cost. Threat services are sold as subscriptions on top. Cisco prices IPS, Malware Defense and URL Filtering separately on one, three or five-year terms. Fortinet's ATP, UTP and Enterprise Protection bundles differ in URL filtering, DLP and IoT detection. Sophos requires a support subscription for firmware updates. Compare quotes on the same services and term.
Which options suit a small business?
Netgate pfSense Plus publishes per-instance prices from $129 a year, and pfSense CE is free. Cloudflare's free plan covers up to 50 users for zero trust access and web filtering. Sophos sells through resellers and MSPs, Check Point lists small and medium business firewalls, and Fortinet sells small branch FortiGate models.
Do these products inspect encrypted traffic?
Yes, by different methods. Zscaler states that it inspects all TLS/SSL traffic. Netskope uses single-pass TLS inspection. Sophos offers TLS decryption and says its built-in NDR detects encrypted threats without decrypting. Cisco's Encrypted Visibility Engine identifies threats in encrypted traffic without decryption. Decryption policy still needs privacy and certificate planning.
Is network security software the same as network monitoring software?
No. Network security software blocks or permits traffic based on threats, identity and policy. Network monitoring software tracks device availability, bandwidth and performance and raises alerts on faults. Some firewalls include traffic reporting, but monitoring tools are bought separately and are compared on StatWharf's network monitoring software page.
How was this comparison compiled?
StatWharf Editorial compared ten network security products using each vendor's public product, pricing, licensing and documentation pages, checked on 13 October 2026. Prices reflect what those pages showed on that date and exclude taxes and hardware. No product was tested hands-on, and no vendor reviewed or confirmed its entry. Buyer fit is drawn from vendor documentation, and the order is not a ranking.
