Best Data Loss Prevention Solutions (2026): Top 10 Compared

Updated October 2026By StatWharf Editorial10 vendorsMethodology

Data loss prevention (DLP) solutions find sensitive data and stop it leaving through channels the organisation does not allow. The ten solutions here split four ways. Microsoft Purview, Forcepoint and Symantec are broad suites with policies across email, endpoints, networks and cloud apps. Netskope and Zscaler deliver DLP inline from a security service edge cloud. Nightfall, Cyberhaven and Mimecast Incydr are cloud-native products built around AI tools, data lineage or insider risk. Proofpoint centres on email and people-centric risk, and Endpoint Protector focuses on devices, USB ports and multi-OS endpoints.

Order is not a ranking. How entries are ordered.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

Data loss prevention solutions find sensitive data and stop it leaving an organisation through email, web uploads, cloud apps, removable media, printing and AI tools. Buyers also search for the category as DLP software, DLP tools or data leakage prevention. This page compares products that enforce data protection policies. Data security posture management tools that only map data at rest are outside its scope.

The ten solutions compared here fall into four groups. Microsoft Purview, Forcepoint and Symantec are broad DLP suites. Netskope and Zscaler deliver DLP inline from security service edge clouds. Nightfall, Cyberhaven and Mimecast Incydr are cloud-native products built around AI coverage, data lineage or insider risk. Proofpoint focuses on email and user behaviour, and Endpoint Protector on devices. All pricing notes were checked in October 2026. Every entry has a dated source check, so the order follows content sequence. That order is not a measure of product quality or a ranking.

Vendor details and trade-offs

Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention

enterprisemicrosoft.com ↗
Consider forOrganisations standardised on Microsoft 365 that want DLP policies across Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Office apps, Windows and macOS devices without a separate agent vendor
Pricing notesMicrosoft lists Microsoft Purview Suite, which includes data loss prevention, at $12.00 per user per month, paid yearly, as an annual subscription that auto-renews. It requires Microsoft 365 E3, or Office 365 E3 with Enterprise Mobility + Security E3. A free trial is offered, and a separate Purview Suite is marketed to small and mid-sized businesses (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluatePolicy tips appear inside Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams, and one policy can cover Microsoft 365 locations, onboarded devices, on-premises file shares and Fabric workspaces

Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention is the DLP component of Microsoft's data security and compliance suite. Policies are created in the Microsoft Purview portal and apply to Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams chat and channel messages, Office applications, Windows 10 and 11 devices and the three most recent macOS versions. Microsoft's documentation also lists on-premises file shares and SharePoint, Fabric and Power BI workspaces, and Microsoft 365 Copilot in preview.

Microsoft describes DLP as deep content analysis rather than a simple text scan, combining keywords, regular expressions, internal function validation, proximity matches and machine learning. Protective actions include a policy tip that warns the user, a block the user can override with a justification, a hard block and, for data at rest, quarantine. Microsoft recommends running policies in simulation mode before enforcing them.

Purview DLP shares sensitivity labels with Information Protection and can tighten controls for users flagged by Insider Risk Management. Alerts can be triaged in Purview or passed to Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Sentinel.

Potential strengths

  • Published per-user price with a free trial
  • Shares labels with Information Protection and adapts controls to Insider Risk Management signals

Trade-offs

  • Requires a Microsoft 365 or Office 365 E3 base licence
  • Non-Microsoft cloud app coverage was listed as preview in the documentation checked

Nightfall

mid-marketnightfall.ai ↗
Consider forSecurity teams at organisations from venture-funded startups to large enterprises that need DLP across SaaS apps, email, browsers, endpoints and AI agents without months of rule tuning
Pricing notesNightfall prices per user per year across Foundation Edition and Premier Edition; the pricing page shows no figures and final pricing depends on user count and data volume. Each user licence includes 2 endpoint devices. Every plan includes 150 GB of data-at-rest scanning, with 1, 3, 5 and 20 TB add-on packs. A free 7-day proof of value replaces a self-serve trial (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluatePremier Edition inspects prompts, MCP tool calls and shell commands in Cursor, Claude Code and VS Code, and discovers local and remote MCP servers

Nightfall is a cloud-native DLP platform that covers SaaS applications, email, browsers, endpoints and AI tools from one detection engine. API integrations connect to 12 SaaS apps, including Google Drive, Slack, GitHub, Jira, Confluence, Zendesk, Salesforce, Microsoft 365, Notion and ChatGPT Enterprise. The endpoint agent inspects data leaving managed laptops to any destination, including file uploads, clipboard pastes, USB transfers, printing and git pushes.

Detection relies on transformer-based models trained on labelled examples instead of regular expressions. Nightfall reports 95% detection precision measured during proofs of value. Remediation options include block, redact, quarantine, revoke sharing, encrypt and coach the user.

Foundation Edition combines data detection and response with exfiltration prevention. Premier Edition adds AI agent controls: hooks for Cursor, Claude Code and VS Code, discovery of MCP servers with shadow-MCP detection, MCP gateway enforcement and monitoring of Claude Enterprise through Anthropic's Compliance API. Nightfall states that it is SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified.

Potential strengths

  • Pre-trained detectors for PII, PHI, PCI, secrets and source code with no regex writing
  • Endpoint agent deploys through Jamf, Intune or other MDM tools

Trade-offs

  • No published price figures

Forcepoint DLP

enterpriseforcepoint.com ↗
Consider forLarge and regulated organisations that need mature policy management, a broad classifier library and the choice of SaaS, on-premises or hybrid deployment
Pricing notesForcepoint does not publish a price for Forcepoint DLP. The product page links to a pricing request form and a demo request (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateRisk-adaptive protection adjusts enforcement to user behaviour, and the ARIA assistant recommends and deploys policies from a chat interface

Forcepoint describes DLP as synonymous with its name, and Forcepoint DLP is part of Forcepoint Data Security Cloud. It applies one policy across AI applications, cloud apps, web, email, endpoints and the network, and scans data at rest in file shares, SharePoint and OneDrive, data in motion in email and uploads, and data in use such as copy, paste, printing and screen capture.

Policy building starts from a library of more than 2,000 classifiers and policy templates for regulations and regions. ARIA, the Adaptive Risk Intelligence Assistant, surfaces insights and deploys policies from a chat interface. Risk-adaptive controls use user behaviour to tighten or relax enforcement. Forcepoint also markets DLP that adds coverage to Microsoft Purview across Microsoft 365.

Buyers choose cloud delivery, with no appliances or patch cycles, or an on-premises deployment that keeps processing within their own network. Forcepoint cites a Leader position in the IDC MarketScape for worldwide DLP 2025.

Potential strengths

  • More than 2,000 classifiers and templates for regional and industry compliance
  • SaaS delivery on AWS with a stated 99.99% uptime, or on-premises for data sovereignty

Trade-offs

  • No public pricing
  • Breadth of channels and policies means a larger deployment project than single-channel tools

Symantec Data Loss Prevention (Broadcom)

enterprisebroadcom.com ↗
Consider forLarge enterprises that want to operate DLP infrastructure themselves, with detection servers for network traffic, data at rest and endpoints
Pricing notesBroadcom does not publish a price for Symantec Data Loss Prevention. The product page showed no plan or price information when checked (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateA modular architecture separates the central Enforce Server from detection servers for network, storage and endpoint, which suits very large, distributed estates

Symantec Data Loss Prevention is now part of Broadcom's enterprise security portfolio. The Help Center for version 16.1 describes a self-managed architecture. Administrators install an Enforce Server, which hosts the administration console and policies, plus detection servers and DLP Agents. The system uses an Oracle database, and the documentation covers installation, upgrades and maintenance of each component.

Broadcom's documentation groups the product by task: discovering sensitive data stored on-premises or in the cloud, monitoring and preventing data loss on the network, managing data that resides on or moves from endpoints, and using cloud services to prevent data loss. Policy authoring is described through seven key features for detecting sensitive content.

REST APIs allow integration with third-party tools. The architecture suits organisations with in-house DLP administrators, many sites and a requirement to keep detection inside their own infrastructure. Buyers should request current licensing and support terms directly from Broadcom or a partner.

Potential strengths

  • Covers data at rest on-premises and in the cloud, network traffic and endpoints
  • REST APIs for integration with third-party products

Trade-offs

  • Self-managed deployment needs an Oracle database and server infrastructure
  • No public pricing, and the product page exposes little detail without scripts

Netskope One Data Loss Prevention

enterprisenetskope.com ↗
Consider forOrganisations adopting a cloud-delivered security service edge that want one DLP policy for SaaS, web, private apps, email, endpoints and generative AI
Pricing notesNetskope does not publish a price for Netskope One DLP. The product page offers demos, self-paced hands-on labs and a free test drive of Netskope Private Access (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluatePolicies use identity, device, behaviour, location and activity context, and coach users in real time when they share sensitive data with AI apps

Netskope One Data Loss Prevention is part of Netskope's single-cloud security platform, which also includes a secure web gateway, cloud access security broker and zero trust network access. Because DLP runs inline in the same service, one policy set covers web traffic, sanctioned and unsanctioned SaaS, private apps, email, endpoints and generative AI tools.

Built-in classification discovers personal identifiers, payment card numbers, financial records and intellectual property, and shows where that data sits and moves across on-premises and cloud environments. Policies can use identity, device, behaviour, browser, location, activity and threat context. When a user attempts a risky action, Netskope can coach the user in real time instead of blocking outright.

Violations are handled through incident workflows or third-party integrations. Netskope can encrypt files in real time as they move into cloud storage such as Google Drive and OneDrive. The service runs on NewEdge, which Netskope describes as the largest private SASE cloud. Netskope states that it achieved FedRAMP High authorisation.

Potential strengths

  • One centrally delivered policy across network, cloud, endpoint, email and AI
  • Encrypts files in real time as they move to cloud storage apps

Trade-offs

  • No public pricing
  • Inline coverage applies to traffic steered through the Netskope One cloud

Zscaler Data Loss Prevention

enterprisezscaler.com ↗
Consider forOrganisations already routing user traffic through Zscaler that want DLP inspection of encrypted web traffic, SaaS, email, endpoints, public cloud and BYOD from the same platform
Pricing notesZscaler does not publish a price for its DLP. The product page offers an interactive demo hub and a no-cost assessment of defences against common exfiltration methods (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateExact Data Match fingerprints specific records, Indexed Document Matching recognises form templates, and OCR scans images and embedded pictures

Zscaler Data Loss Prevention is built into the Zero Trust Exchange, the inline security cloud that also delivers Zscaler's secure web gateway and private access services. One policy applies across web, endpoint, email, SaaS, public cloud, private apps and unmanaged devices, so buyers already using Zscaler for internet access add DLP without another proxy.

Zscaler argues that legacy DLP cannot inspect TLS/SSL traffic at scale and states that encrypted traffic makes up 95% of web traffic. Its cloud inspects that traffic inline. Machine-learning data discovery finds sensitive data across endpoints, inline traffic and cloud stores, and email DLP can be added through an SMTP relay.

Detection options go beyond keyword and pattern matching. Exact Data Match fingerprints specific records such as customer or employee data. Indexed Document Matching recognises high-value forms such as tax or medical documents. Optical character recognition classifies data in PNG and JPEG files and in images embedded in documents, and works with both matching methods. A lightweight endpoint agent extends policy to devices.

Potential strengths

  • Inspects TLS/SSL traffic at scale in the Zscaler cloud
  • Extends DLP to email through an SMTP relay without configuration changes

Trade-offs

  • No public pricing
  • Designed around the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange rather than as a standalone DLP product

Proofpoint Enterprise DLP

enterpriseproofpoint.com ↗
Consider forSecurity teams that treat data loss as a people problem and want email, cloud app, endpoint and generative AI alerts correlated with user behaviour in one workbench
Pricing notesProofpoint does not publish a price for Enterprise DLP. The product page invites buyers to request a demo, and Proofpoint sells managed DLP services alongside the software (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateBehavioural AI catches misdirected email and email exfiltration, and a single workbench correlates alerts, user activity and data movement

Proofpoint Enterprise DLP protects sensitive data across email, cloud applications, endpoints and generative AI tools. Proofpoint frames data loss around three kinds of user: careless, compromised and malicious. Its approach combines content classification with behavioural signals about who is acting and why.

A single workbench brings together alerts, user activity and data movement from every channel, so analysts can see what happened, which file changed and where the data went. Controls adjust to data sensitivity, user risk and context. For generative AI, Proofpoint detects sensitive data in prompts, uploads and responses and treats approved and unsanctioned tools differently.

Email remains a core strength. Behavioural AI flags misdirected messages and exfiltration to personal addresses, and encryption policies can apply automatically to outbound mail. In Microsoft 365, the product classifies data and applies policies in Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint. Proofpoint also offers a technology-enabled managed service for teams without in-house DLP staff, drawing on more than 20 years of programme work.

Potential strengths

  • Covers Microsoft 365 including Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint
  • Expert services for designing and running a DLP programme

Trade-offs

  • No public pricing
  • The product page gives few technical specifics, such as supported endpoint operating systems

Cyberhaven

mid-marketcyberhaven.com ↗
Consider forSecurity teams protecting intellectual property, source code and customer data that often lacks a recognisable pattern, across Windows, Mac, Linux and VDI endpoints
Pricing notesCyberhaven does not publish a price. The website offers demo requests and on-demand demos (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluatePolicies can be tested against the stored history of user actions before deployment, and incidents show every step the data took

Cyberhaven combines content analysis with data lineage: a record of where each piece of data originated, where it has been and who has handled it. The vendor states that lineage identifies important data that content inspection misses, such as design files or source code with no recognisable pattern, and reduces false positives from common strings like phone numbers.

Enforcement covers USB drives, printers, email, personal cloud storage, unsanctioned web and SaaS apps and AI tools, on Windows, Mac, Linux and VDI. When an action is blocked, a message explains the policy and can ask for a business justification. Cyberhaven also governs coding agents such as Claude Code and Cursor.

Policies are built in a visual editor and can be tested against historical activity before going live. Standard features include out-of-the-box policies, PII, PCI and PHI identifiers, OCR for images and PDFs, recognition of Microsoft labels, optional screen recording before an incident and Splunk integration. The service is cloud-delivered with no databases to manage.

Potential strengths

  • Lineage tracks data even after encryption or compression
  • Unifies DLP, DSPM, insider risk and AI security in one cloud platform

Trade-offs

  • No public pricing
  • No self-serve trial is listed; evaluation runs through demos
Sources and status

Mimecast Incydr

mid-marketmimecast.com ↗
Consider forSecurity teams that want insider risk visibility and adaptive data protection quickly, without dedicated DLP staff or months of policy writing
Pricing notesMimecast does not publish a price for Incydr. The product page offers a quote request and states that plans are tailored, with data residency options and FedRAMP-authorised solutions (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateResponses scale with risk, from in-the-moment education to allow-with-justification to targeted blocking, for departing employees and unsanctioned MCP connections

Mimecast Incydr is an insider risk and data protection product. It shows exfiltration risk across email, endpoints, cloud storage, browsers and AI agents from the first day, without requiring policies to be written, and ties each event back to a person.

Dashboards cover AI agents, MCP connections, shadow AI, cloud storage and source code movement. Microsoft Information Protection labels and AI content inspection detect PII, PCI and custom data types. The Agent Risk Center discovers AI agents operating in the environment and applies controls to their activity.

Responses are adaptive: educate the user in the moment, allow with a justification, or block for high-risk cases such as departing employees. Integrations add HR, EDR and identity context. CrowdStrike can isolate endpoints, Cortex XSOAR can run coordinated response and Splunk receives alerts and file events. Mimecast cites customers including Snowflake and Okta.

Potential strengths

  • Mimecast states no more than 4 hours of weekly admin and no dedicated staff required
  • Lightweight agent using less than 1% of CPU, plus a browser extension

Trade-offs

  • No public pricing
  • Built around insider risk detection rather than exhaustive content policy enforcement

Endpoint Protector by Netwrix

smbendpointprotector.com ↗
Consider forIT teams in mixed Windows, macOS and Linux environments that need granular USB and peripheral control plus content inspection of file transfers on the endpoint
Pricing notesEndpoint Protector does not publish a price. Pricing is tailored through a request form or authorised resellers, a free trial is offered, and deployment is available as SaaS, cloud or virtual appliance (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateDevice control works by vendor ID, product ID and serial number, and N-gram text categorisation discovers source code in hundreds of file formats

Endpoint Protector, developed by CoSoSys and now sold as Endpoint Protector by Netwrix, is a cross-platform DLP product for Windows, macOS and Linux endpoints. It is built from four modules that can be licensed together or separately.

Device Control locks down, monitors and manages USB and peripheral ports, with rules by vendor ID, product ID and serial number. Content Aware Protection monitors and blocks file transfers using content and context inspection, and now restricts uploads, clipboard pastes and file movement into AI tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot. Enforced Encryption secures data copied to USB storage with password-based encryption. eDiscovery scans endpoints for sensitive data at rest and can encrypt or delete it.

Predefined policies speed up deployment, and granular settings can be applied per user, computer or group. N-gram text categorisation identifies intellectual property, including source code, in hundreds of file formats. Deployment options are SaaS, cloud or a virtual appliance.

Potential strengths

  • Equal coverage across Windows, macOS and Linux
  • Modular approach lets buyers combine only the modules they need

Trade-offs

  • Endpoint-focused; SaaS and network inspection are not described on the product pages
  • No published price

How to choose a vendor

Map the exit channels first

List where data actually leaves: email, browser uploads, sanctioned SaaS, personal cloud storage, USB drives, printing and AI prompts. Suites such as Forcepoint and Symantec cover most channels with separate components. Endpoint Protector concentrates on devices, and Netskope and Zscaler inspect traffic that passes through their clouds. Match the product to the channels that carry the most risk.

Check what is already licensed

Microsoft lists Purview Suite at $12.00 per user per month, paid yearly, on top of Microsoft 365 E3. Organisations with that licence already own DLP for Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams and onboarded devices. Several vendors here, including Nightfall, Cyberhaven and Forcepoint, position their products as additions to Purview rather than replacements.

Ask how false positives are handled

Pattern matching on numbers and keywords produces alerts that analysts must clear by hand. Vendors answer this differently: Nightfall uses trained detectors, Cyberhaven adds data lineage, Zscaler offers Exact Data Match and Indexed Document Matching, and Forcepoint and Incydr add user risk context. Ask for a proof of value on the buyer's own data.

Confirm deployment and data residency

Symantec DLP runs an Enforce Server, detection servers and an Oracle database. Forcepoint offers cloud or on-premises deployment. Endpoint Protector offers SaaS, cloud or virtual appliance options. Cloud-only products remove infrastructure but process events in the vendor's cloud, so regulated buyers should check where incidents and screenshots are stored.

Frequently asked questions

What is a data loss prevention solution?

A data loss prevention (DLP) solution identifies sensitive data, such as personal records, payment card numbers, health data, credentials and intellectual property, and controls how it moves. It can warn the user, ask for a justification, block the action, encrypt the file or quarantine it. Coverage typically spans email, web and cloud uploads, endpoints, removable media and, increasingly, AI tools.

What are the main types of DLP?

Endpoint DLP runs an agent on laptops and controls USB drives, printing, clipboard and uploads; Endpoint Protector and Cyberhaven are examples. Network and inline DLP inspect traffic, as Netskope and Zscaler do from their clouds. Cloud or API DLP scans data inside SaaS apps, as Nightfall does. Suites such as Forcepoint, Symantec and Microsoft Purview combine several types under one policy.

How much does data loss prevention software cost?

Microsoft is the only vendor here that publishes a figure: Purview Suite costs $12.00 per user per month, paid yearly, and requires Microsoft 365 E3 or an equivalent base licence. Nightfall prices per user per year but quotes each deal. Forcepoint, Symantec, Netskope, Zscaler, Proofpoint, Cyberhaven, Incydr and Endpoint Protector all require a quote.

Is Microsoft Purview DLP enough on its own?

For organisations that keep most data in Microsoft 365 and Windows or macOS devices, Purview covers email, files, Teams, Office apps and onboarded devices. Microsoft's documentation listed non-Microsoft cloud apps such as Box, Dropbox, Google Workspace and Salesforce as preview. Nightfall, Cyberhaven and Forcepoint each market coverage that adds to Purview outside Microsoft's own apps.

How do DLP solutions reduce false positives?

Methods differ by vendor. Nightfall uses trained machine-learning detectors instead of regular expressions. Cyberhaven adds data lineage so policies know where a file came from. Zscaler offers Exact Data Match and Indexed Document Matching to fingerprint real records and forms. Forcepoint, Proofpoint and Incydr factor user risk into enforcement. Running policies in monitor or simulation mode first also cuts noise.

Can DLP stop employees pasting data into ChatGPT and other AI tools?

Most solutions here now include AI controls. Nightfall, Cyberhaven, Endpoint Protector, Netskope, Proofpoint and Incydr state that they detect or block sensitive data in prompts and uploads to unsanctioned AI apps. Nightfall Premier, Cyberhaven and Incydr also address AI coding agents or MCP connections. Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 Copilot as a preview DLP location.

What is the difference between DLP and insider risk management?

DLP enforces rules on sensitive content as it moves. Insider risk management watches user behaviour over time, such as a departing employee downloading unusual volumes, and scores risk. The categories now overlap: Mimecast Incydr and Cyberhaven combine both, Forcepoint applies risk-adaptive controls and Microsoft Purview links DLP to Insider Risk Management.

How were these data loss prevention solutions selected and checked?

Candidates came from buyer searches for data loss prevention solutions and from vendor websites. Each product, documentation and pricing page cited here was fetched on 25 October 2026. Prices are quoted only where the vendor publishes them. No product was tested hands-on, and no entry is vendor-confirmed. The order of entries follows content sequence and is not a ranking.
