Best Veterinary Practice Management Software (2026): Top 10 Compared

Updated October 2026By StatWharf Editorial10 vendorsMethodology

Veterinary practice management software, often called a PIMS, runs the clinic's appointment book, medical records, invoicing, inventory and client reminders, and connects to laboratories, imaging and payment processors. The ten products below split into three groups. ezyVet, Provet and DaySmart Vet publish a subscription price or a starting rate, and IDEXX publishes the first-year setup fees for Neo. Shepherd, Digitail, Vetspire and NectarVet are cloud systems sold through a demo and quote. Covetrus Pulse and IDEXX Cornerstone are the practice systems of the two large diagnostic and distribution groups, also quoted on request, with Cornerstone the only server-based product here.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

Veterinary practice management software runs the business and clinical record of an animal hospital: appointments, SOAP medical records, estimates and invoices, inventory, reminders and reports. Current systems add diagnostic ordering with results returned to the chart, integrated card payments, online booking, client apps and AI tools that draft clinical notes. Practices choosing a product usually weigh practice type, diagnostic partner, payment processing and the cost and scope of data conversion. Scheduling-only tools for human healthcare are compared separately on the patient scheduling software page.

The comparison below covers ten products, from cloud systems with published prices to quote-based systems sold by IDEXX and Covetrus. Information comes from each vendor’s own product, documentation or pricing page, checked on 11 October 2026. Three vendors publish a subscription price or starting rate, IDEXX publishes the setup fees for Neo, and the other six quote on request.

Vendor details and trade-offs

ezyVet

enterpriseezyvet.com ↗
Consider forSpecialty, referral, emergency and 24-hour practices, and corporate veterinary groups, that want a cloud PIMS integrated with IDEXX diagnostics, as ezyVet's pricing page and IDEXX's Neo comparison table describe
Pricing notesStarts at $260.50 per month in the United States, with all features included. Monthly pricing covers 24/7 support, data hosting and upgrades but not implementation; implementation and data conversion are scoped by clinic size and structure. Contracts run a six-month initial term followed by a three-month rolling term. Enterprise pricing for corporate groups and current promotions are available on request (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCharges post automatically as notes, treatments and diagnostics are completed, with native IDEXX diagnostics, imaging and inpatient workflows

ezyVet is the cloud practice management system that IDEXX sells to larger and more complex practices. IDEXX's own comparison table places ezyVet, rather than Neo, with specialty, referral and emergency hospitals, with practices open around the clock, and with clinics that want Vet Radar treatment workflow tools. ezyVet states that more than 7,000 practices use it worldwide.

The product keeps clinical records, inventory, invoicing, reporting, diagnostic ordering and client communications in one interface. Clinical templates, structured notes and medical protocols attach to the visit, and charges are added to the invoice as treatments and diagnostics are recorded. Practices using IDEXX in-house analyzers or reference laboratories can order tests and view results from within ezyVet, and the vendor lists more than 100 certified third-party integrations.

Data conversion covers clients, suppliers, patients, medical history, invoices, purchase orders and inventory, and ezyVet states it will warn in advance about any data it cannot convert. Support runs 24/7 by phone and email.

Potential strengths

  • Published US starting price with every feature included
  • Short initial term and rolling contract rather than a multi-year commitment

Trade-offs

  • Implementation and data conversion are quoted separately
  • IDEXX positions it for larger and specialty practices rather than one- or two-doctor clinics

Feature to evaluateFeature grid lists a production animal toolkit, triage board, referral portal and an MCP connection for reporting

Provet is a cloud PIMS that states it serves more than 3,000 clinics and 55,000 veterinary professionals, with more than 150 integrations. Customer quotes on its site come from IVC Evidensia, a large veterinary group, and from an equine ambulatory practice, and the feature grid includes a production animal toolkit alongside medical records, treatment sheets, boarding, health plans and vaccine certificates.

Core is the single-site plan. Pro adds a referral portal, multi-location management, a triage board and dedicated customer success. Enterprise adds a dedicated account manager, a service level agreement, custom terms and single sign-on. All plans include online booking, scheduling, automated SMS and email reminders, client messaging, consent forms, payment processing, treatment bundles, booking deposits and auto charge capture.

AI patient summaries and AI discharge instructions are listed in all plans, while the Clinical Agent, which fills the medical chart and captures charges from dictation, is a paid add-on. Provet Pay handles card-present and online payments with cards on file.

Potential strengths

  • Plan prices, platform fees and the AI add-on are all published
  • Non-vet staff users carry no per-seat charge on Core

Pricing notesPlans start at $123 per month. DaySmart Vet states that data migration is free and that onboarding, training and optional add-on costs are disclosed before signing. The Daisy Voice AI SOAP note tool is an add-on, and custom pricing is available for multi-doctor and multi-location teams (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCollaborative SOAP notes that several staff can edit at once, with booking deposits to reduce no-shows

DaySmart Vet, formerly sold as Vetter Software and still served from the vettersoftware.com domain, is a cloud PIMS that has operated since 2011. Its pricing page states more than 2,500 practices use it, and its testimonials come mainly from mobile and small independent practices.

SOAP notes save to the cloud and can be edited by several staff members at the same time, with customizable templates. Scheduling covers a digital calendar, 24/7 online booking requests, booking deposits and digital intake and consent forms. Client communication includes automated text and email reminders, two-way texting that saves replies to the record, and the PetCare mobile app, through which clients manage visits, view records and certificates, make payments and request prescriptions.

Operations features include wellness plans, inventory with automatic price adjustments, more than 80 reports and more than 40 integrations. Support is available 24/7 by chat, email and phone. Daisy Voice, the vendor's AI tool, drafts SOAP notes from voice as a paid add-on.

Potential strengths

  • Published starting price and free data migration

Consider forOne- and two-doctor single-location practices that want to get running quickly with self-paced training and integrated IDEXX diagnostics, as IDEXX's Neo pricing page describes
Pricing notesIDEXX publishes first-year one-time fees: setup and training at $2,375, required, and data conversion at $590, optional, from more than 65 practice management systems. The monthly subscription is not published and is quoted through a demo. A wireless Clover payment device is provided at no additional charge (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateIDEXX states which practices Neo suits and which should choose ezyVet instead

Neo is IDEXX's cloud PIMS for smaller practices. Its pricing page compares it directly with ezyVet: Neo is marked for one- and two-doctor single locations and for practices that want self-paced training, while specialty, referral, emergency and 24-hour practices are directed to ezyVet. Both products integrate with VetConnect PLUS and IDEXX Web PACS.

The dashboard summarizes overdue invoices, reminders due, draft invoices and remaining appointments, and a task list collects callbacks and diagnostic results. Patient records give one-click access to history, preformatted examination notes, a master diagnosis list and low and high estimates. Diagnostics can be ordered from IDEXX and Antech with results returned into the record.

The schedule starts estimates and invoices from the appointment, sends SMS reminders and includes a boarding module and a patient portal for client requests. Payments are taken from the patient record through a Clover device. Customer quotes on the site come from a mobile practice and small general practices.

Potential strengths

  • Setup and conversion fees are published up front
  • Integrated ordering for both IDEXX and Antech diagnostics

Trade-offs

  • Monthly subscription price is not published
  • IDEXX does not position it for specialty, emergency or 24-hour practices

Shepherd

smbshepherd.vet ↗
Consider forIndependent veterinary practices that want a cloud PIMS in which the medical record drives invoicing and inventory, as Shepherd's product pages describe
Pricing notesQuote-based. Shepherd's site has no pricing page and directs buyers to schedule a demo (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateApproved estimates move into treatment plans, and administered treatments carry their charges and discharge instructions to the invoice

Shepherd is a cloud PIMS founded by veterinarian Dr. Cindy Barnes and designed around the path a patient takes through a visit. Its central idea is that an accurate medical record should produce an accurate invoice: administering a treatment adds it to the invoice and attaches any discharge instructions, and approved estimates are pushed to treatment plans before the patient leaves the exam room.

Inventory is decremented with each product administration and supports reordering. Built-in reports cover accounting through vaccinations, and the vendor lists built-in AI tools trained on clinical cases. Shepherd cites industry estimates of missed-charge losses per doctor to explain the value of automatic charge capture.

The integrations page separates two-way software integrations from data connections. Listed partners include Antech laboratories, IDEXX PACS imaging, CareCredit financing with write-back to the record, CUBEX medication cabinets and the Fear Free emotional medical record, plus categories for client communication, pharmacy, controlled drug logs, microchipping and wellness plans.

Potential strengths

  • Medical record, invoice and inventory stay linked without double entry
  • Integrations page lists two-way connections by category

Trade-offs

  • No published pricing
  • Public site gives less detail on multi-location and enterprise features

Digitail

mid-marketdigitail.com ↗
Consider forMobile clinics on the Mobile plan and brick-and-mortar practices on Growth or Growth AI that want AI documentation and a pet parent app, as Digitail's plans page describes
Pricing notesQuote-based. The plans page lists Mobile, Growth, Growth AI and Enterprise tiers and their features without prices, and offers separate pricing for de novo clinics. Every plan includes in-house data migration, 1:1 onboarding, 24/7 support and the open API (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateSeparate plan for mobile clinics and an AI tier covering intake, scribing, voice to invoice and practice management tasks

Digitail is a cloud PIMS that states it is used by more than 10,000 veterinarians. Its plans are built around practice type. Mobile covers SOAP medical records, scheduling and online booking, inventory, billing and payments, wellness plans, email campaigns, the pet parent app, reporting, a flowboard and more than 40 integrations, including VetCove, IDEXX and VetSource.

Growth, aimed at brick-and-mortar practices, adds the Tails AI Scribe, dental charts, a whiteboard, a boarding calendar with room management, anesthesia and vitals monitoring, dosage guideline setup, an advanced marketing suite and a clinic health dashboard. Growth AI adds the rest of the Tails AI suite: an assistant, intake, medical record summaries, voice to invoice, a practice manager, a commission calculator, a concierge and discharge notes. Enterprise covers multi-location groups.

Unlimited staff users are listed on all plans, and the plans page shows one-month free trials of some AI features. A separate pricing route exists for de novo clinics opening a new practice.

Potential strengths

  • Data migration and onboarding included in every plan
  • Unlimited staff users and an open API

Trade-offs

  • Plan prices are not published
  • Whiteboard, room management and anesthesia monitoring start at the Growth plan

Vetspire

mid-marketvetspire.com ↗
Consider forMulti-location practices that want customizable pricing by clinic, built-in reminders and online booking, and AI documentation in one cloud system, as Vetspire's product page describes
Pricing notesQuote-based. Vetspire's pricing link leads to its product page with a demo request and no listed prices (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateEncounter-based medical records with multi-user editing and an AI scribe that places notes in the correct fields

Vetspire is a cloud PIMS that emphasizes ease of use, stating that most clinics learn it in under a week. Medical records are organized around encounters, with real-time documentation, multi-user editing and customizable input types, and records can be filtered by activity or date and shared for referrals.

The scheduler supports drag-and-drop rescheduling, custom appointment types and durations, default encounter templates and schedule templates that reserve time, for example mornings for wellness visits. For multi-location practices, client pricing can be set by clinic, service and department, and personalized dashboards follow each user's role.

Vetspire's AI Scribe records and transcribes consultations into the correct record fields, and AI Summary condenses visit notes and next steps into a short history. Integrated reminders and online booking replace separate client communication tools, which the vendor says saves more than $200 per location per month. Two-way email and text messaging works from the patient chart, and admin triggers send automated messages based on events.

Potential strengths

  • Location-specific client pricing for multi-site groups
  • Reminders, online booking and two-way messaging built in

Trade-offs

  • No published pricing
  • Public site lists few named integrations

Covetrus Pulse

enterprisecovetrus.com ↗
Consider forPractices that use or plan to use Covetrus services, including the vRxPro online pharmacy, Covetrus Payments, Covetrus Comms and CarePlans, as the Covetrus Pulse product page describes

Covetrus Pulse is the cloud practice system at the center of the Covetrus platform, which Covetrus calls a veterinary operating system. It brings Covetrus's other practice services into one workspace.

The vRxPro integration gives practices a branded online pharmacy whose client purchases sync to the patient record, with prescriptions created, approved and renewed in Pulse. Covetrus Payments handles checkout and reconciliation, Covetrus Comms adds online scheduling, automated reminders, unlimited texting and appointment deposits, and Covetrus CarePlans imports billing status and service consumption into the record.

Daily tools include a treatment board with real-time patient status, a task dashboard for callbacks, customizable fillable forms that write into the record, and clinic reports. Covetrus lists more than 250 third-party integrations, including Zoetis Diagnostics. Its support site provides hardware specifications, a data conversion guide and a go-live checklist.

Potential strengths

  • AI SOAP note features included without an extra charge
  • More than 250 third-party integrations

Trade-offs

  • No published pricing
  • Much of the value depends on adopting other Covetrus services

IDEXX Cornerstone

enterprisesoftware.idexx.com ↗
Consider forPractices that want server-based practice management with integrated IDEXX diagnostics, imaging and payments, as IDEXX's Cornerstone page describes
Pricing notesQuote-based. IDEXX publishes no Cornerstone prices; buyers request pricing through IDEXX (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCompliance assessment alerts staff to each eligible care opportunity during the visit

Cornerstone is IDEXX's server-based practice management system, installed on the practice's own infrastructure rather than run in a browser. It is the only on-premises product on this page.

Core features include diagnostic integration with IDEXX in-house analyzers and reference laboratories, scheduling, inventory, electronic medical records, imaging integration, invoicing, reporting and a patient whiteboard. A compliance assessment feature alerts staff to every care opportunity a patient is eligible for. VetConnect PLUS shows all IDEXX results for a patient with trend graphs, and Vello adds automated reminders and a pet owner mobile app. Cornerstone Payments sends invoice amounts to the card terminal and records payments back in the software.

The partner list includes Antech, Abaxis and Heska laboratories, Cubex and Omnicell dispensing cabinets, MWI and Patterson ordering, Instinct treatment plans, IDEXX Web PACS and IDEXX data backup and recovery.

Potential strengths

  • Wide integration list covering laboratories, dispensing cabinets and distributors
  • Mature feature set including whiteboard, imaging and compliance alerts

Trade-offs

  • Server-based, so the practice manages local infrastructure
  • No published pricing

NectarVet

smbnectarvet.com ↗
Consider forSmall and independent practices that want AI-assisted documentation, built-in payments and paperless client forms in one cloud system, as NectarVet's site describes
Pricing notesQuote-based. NectarVet's site lists no plans or prices and offers a contact form (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateTwo-way SMS and MMS messages are added directly to the patient record

NectarVet is a cloud PIMS aimed at clinic teams in small and independent practices, and states that more than 1,000 veterinarians use it. Its headline feature is AI-assisted SOAP notes generated from voice, which the vendor says can complete an exam record in under five minutes.

Invoices are generated automatically from the visit to reduce missed charges, and online booking can take deposits to discourage no-shows. Client communication includes patient reminders, two-way SMS and MMS saved to the patient record, a client portal and direct online scheduling. Clinical tools include surgery notes with a monitoring chart, prescription management, custom treatment bundles, digital patient diagrams, a digital treatment whiteboard and a clinic flow dashboard.

How to choose a vendor

Match the product to the practice type

Vendors state the practice types they target. IDEXX positions Neo for one- or two-doctor single locations and ezyVet for specialty, referral, emergency and 24-hour hospitals. Digitail sells a separate Mobile plan for mobile clinics, Provet lists a production animal toolkit and an equine customer, and Provet Pro and Vetspire describe multi-location management. A general practice, an emergency hospital and an ambulatory large-animal practice should shortlist differently.

Price the whole first year, not the monthly rate

Monthly subscriptions leave out costs that vary widely. IDEXX lists $2,375 of required setup and training for Neo before any subscription, ezyVet scopes implementation and data conversion separately, and Provet adds $40 per seat per month for its Clinical Agent AI scribe. DaySmart Vet states that data migration is free, and Digitail includes in-house migration in every plan. Ask each vendor for a written first-year total covering subscription, onboarding, migration, AI add-ons and payment processing.

Check diagnostics and payments before features

Laboratory and imaging integration decides much of the daily workflow. ezyVet, Neo and Cornerstone integrate natively with IDEXX diagnostics, Covetrus Pulse lists Zoetis Diagnostics among more than 250 integrations, and Shepherd lists Antech and IDEXX PACS. Several vendors also bundle their own payment processing, which can change the effective price. Confirm that the practice's reference laboratory, in-house analyzers, imaging system and card processor are supported in both directions.

Frequently asked questions

What is veterinary practice management software?

Veterinary practice management software, also called a practice information management system or PIMS, runs a clinic's appointments, medical records, invoicing, inventory, reminders and reporting. Most current products are cloud-based, such as ezyVet, Provet, DaySmart Vet, Shepherd and Digitail, and connect to diagnostic laboratories, imaging systems, payment processors and online pharmacies. IDEXX Cornerstone is a server-based alternative installed on the practice's own infrastructure.

How much does veterinary practice management software cost?

Published prices start at $123 per month for DaySmart Vet and $260.50 per month for ezyVet in the US. Provet charges $99 or $129 per vet per month plus a $249 or $299 monthly platform fee that includes one vet. IDEXX publishes Neo's setup and training fee of $2,375 but not its subscription. Shepherd, Digitail, Vetspire, Covetrus Pulse, Cornerstone and NectarVet quote on request.

What is the difference between cloud and server-based veterinary software?

Cloud software runs in a browser on vendor-hosted servers, so updates, backups and remote access are handled by the vendor. Server-based software such as IDEXX Cornerstone runs on hardware the practice maintains, which gives local control but makes the practice responsible for servers, backups and upgrades. IDEXX sells both types, with ezyVet and Neo as its cloud products.

Which products suit specialty, emergency or 24-hour hospitals?

IDEXX positions ezyVet for specialty, referral, emergency and 24-hour practices, and its comparison table marks Neo as unsuitable for these. Provet Pro adds a referral portal and triage board, and Covetrus Pulse includes a treatment board for real-time patient status. Hospitals should confirm inpatient treatment sheets, controlled drug logs and overnight support with each vendor.

Which veterinary software works for mobile and ambulatory practices?

Digitail sells a dedicated Mobile plan for mobile clinics, and DaySmart Vet and IDEXX Neo both feature mobile practices in their customer stories. Provet quotes an equine ambulatory practice and lists a production animal toolkit. Mobile and large-animal vets should check offline access, tablet use, travel invoicing and payment capture away from the clinic.

Do these systems include AI scribes?

Most do, on different terms. Covetrus states its AI SOAP features are included at no extra cost. Provet charges $40 per seat per month for its Clinical Agent, Digitail includes the Tails AI Scribe from the Growth plan, and DaySmart Vet sells Daisy Voice as an add-on. Vetspire and NectarVet also list AI documentation tools, and Shepherd lists built-in AI tools. Buyers should confirm how recordings are stored and who reviews generated notes.

What should a practice check before switching PIMS?

Practices should confirm which records convert, including medical history, invoices and inventory, and whether conversion costs extra. ezyVet scopes conversion separately, IDEXX charges $590 for Neo data conversion, and DaySmart Vet and Digitail state migration is included. Contract terms, payment processing requirements and support for the existing laboratory and imaging systems also differ between vendors.

How was this comparison compiled?

StatWharf Editorial selected ten veterinary practice management products with live product pages, covering cloud systems with published prices, quote-based cloud systems and the systems of the large diagnostic and distribution groups. Each vendor's own product, pricing or documentation page was read on 11 October 2026, and prices are recorded as published. No product was installed or tested, no vendor reviewed its entry, and the order of entries is not a ranking.
