Best API Security Tools (2026): Top 10 Compared

Updated October 2026By StatWharf Editorial10 vendorsMethodology

API security tools find the APIs an organisation actually runs, assess them for risk, test them for exploitable flaws and detect or block attacks against them. The ten products below fall into three groups. Salt Security, Akamai API Security, Harness Web Application & API Protection (built on Traceable), Wallarm, Cequence, Imperva and Levo.ai are runtime platforms that read live API traffic to build an inventory and spot abuse, and all of them are sold through quotes. Cloudflare API Shield adds API controls to Cloudflare's edge and is an Enterprise add-on. 42Crunch and APIsec focus on testing before and after release, and both publish self-serve prices.

Order is not a ranking. How entries are ordered.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

API security tools help an organisation answer four questions about its APIs: which ones exist, which are risky, which can be exploited, and which are under attack right now. The products discover APIs from traffic, code and specifications, check them against risks such as the OWASP API Security Top 10, test them with simulated attacks, and detect or block abuse in production. General web application firewalls, API gateways and API management platforms are not covered except where the same vendor sells a dedicated API security product.

The comparison below covers ten products. Features and pricing come from each vendor’s own product, documentation and pricing pages, checked on 11 October 2026. Two entries publish prices: 42Crunch and APIsec. The other eight are sold through quotes, so their profiles record the plan structure and licensing terms their pages state. Ownership changes are reflected: Noname Security is now part of Akamai, and Traceable is now part of Harness.

Vendor details and trade-offs

Salt Security

enterprisesalt.security ↗
Consider forLarge organisations that need a continuous inventory of APIs, posture governance and behaviour-based detection of API abuse, now extended to AI agents and MCP servers, as Salt Security's platform pages describe
Pricing notesQuote-based. The Salt Security homepage and platform page publish no figures and direct buyers to request a demo (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCorrelates traffic to a unique agent identity and baselines behaviour to catch mass data pulls, unauthorised tool use and logic abuse, with automated blocking

Salt Security, based in Palo Alto, California, states that it has secured APIs since 2016 and reports more than 100 enterprise deployments. Its use-case pages cover discovering all APIs, API posture management, stopping behavioural API attacks and extending data security to APIs.

The current product is the Agentic Security Platform. Salt describes an Agentic Security Graph that maps relationships between language models, MCP servers and the APIs they invoke, built from code through to runtime. Three modules sit on top. Agentic Security Posture Management inventories agents, MCP servers and models and flags shadow MCP servers and over-permissioned agents. AI Detection and Response looks for prompt injection, unsanctioned model use and sensitive data in model calls. Agentic Detection and Response baselines agent behaviour and blocks machine-speed attacks.

The Illuminate layer connects findings to existing tools, enriching SIEM alerts, opening Jira tickets and passing blocks to a firewall. Salt maps governance evidence to the EU AI Act, NIST and SOC 2.

How to choose a vendor

Decide whether the tool must block or only detect

Some products sit in the request path and can stop an attack, while others analyse a copy of the traffic and pass findings to a WAF, gateway or SIEM. Wallarm describes inline blocking as its main distinction. Harness lists out-of-band, inline and edge deployment, and Imperva enforces through its Cloud WAF and WAF Gateway. Ask each vendor which actions its proposed deployment can take on its own.

Count what the vendor bills on

Units differ across this page. APIsec prices per 100 endpoints, where an endpoint is one path and method. Levo.ai also quotes per endpoint. 42Crunch sells monthly security tokens to individuals and fixed team tiers. Harness sells WAAP as a module of its Enterprise plan, and Cloudflare sells API Shield as an Enterprise add-on. Count endpoints, traffic and users before requesting quotes.

Check how discovery reaches internal and AI traffic

An inventory is only as complete as its traffic sources. Vendors list different inputs: traffic mirroring, eBPF, gateway integrations, code repositories, OpenAPI files and external scans. Salt, Akamai, Wallarm, Cequence, 42Crunch and Levo.ai now also describe discovery of MCP servers and AI agent traffic, so buyers with AI projects should ask how those findings link to the APIs behind them.

Frequently asked questions

What are API security tools?

API security tools protect the application programming interfaces that connect applications, partners and AI agents. They discover APIs, including undocumented shadow APIs, assess them for design and configuration risk, test them for exploitable flaws such as broken object level authorization, and detect or block attacks and abuse in production. Some products cover all of these stages and others focus on testing or edge enforcement.

How much do API security tools cost?

Most runtime platforms on this page are quote-based, including Salt Security, Akamai, Harness, Wallarm, Cequence, Imperva, Cloudflare API Shield and Levo.ai. Two vendors publish prices: 42Crunch from $9 per month for one user to $599 per month for TEAM 25, and APIsec at $690 or $2,750 per month per 100 endpoints, with a free plan. Enterprise tiers of both are custom-priced.

What is the difference between API security testing and runtime API protection?

Testing checks APIs for flaws before or after release by auditing specifications or sending simulated attacks. 42Crunch and APIsec lead with testing. Runtime protection watches live traffic to find APIs, detect abuse and block attacks. Salt, Wallarm, Cequence and Imperva lead with runtime. Akamai and Harness describe both in one product.

Can an API security tool replace a WAF or API gateway?

Usually not. Harness states that WAAP complements an API gateway rather than replacing its routing, rate limiting and lifecycle functions. Several API security products work through existing WAFs and gateways: Imperva enforces through its WAF, Cequence integrates with gateways, and Salt passes blocks to firewalls. Wallarm and Harness also include their own WAF capabilities.

What happened to Noname Security and Traceable?

Akamai acquired Noname Security in 2024, and the product is now sold as Akamai API Security. Traceable merged with Harness in 2025, and its platform is now sold as Harness Web Application & API Protection, with documentation still using the Traceable name. Imperva is part of Thales.

Do API security tools cover AI agents and MCP servers?

Several now do. Salt Security maps agents, MCP servers and APIs in an Agentic Security Graph. Akamai tags APIs linked to generative AI and MCP servers. Wallarm's advanced bundle adds MCP server discovery and sessions. 42Crunch audits MCP servers against generated contracts, and Cequence and Levo.ai describe AI and agent coverage. Buyers should confirm which features a quote includes.

Is there a free API security tool?

APIsec has a free plan for testing public APIs with basic simulations. 42Crunch offers a free 14-day Starter trial for one user. Cloudflare Free, Pro and Business zones include limited schema validation for up to 100, 250 and 500 saved endpoints, and anyone can use Cloudflare-managed mutual TLS. Imperva offers a free trial of its API Security product.

How was this comparison compiled?

StatWharf Editorial selected ten API security products with live product pages and read each vendor's own product, documentation and pricing pages on 11 October 2026. Prices are recorded as published, with billing units and conditions, and current company ownership was checked. No product was installed or tested, no vendor reviewed its entry, and the order of entries is not a ranking.
