Best Screen Recording Software (2026): Top 10 Compared
Business screen recording splits into three kinds of product. Async video messaging tools such as Loom, Zight and Tella record screen and camera, upload to a hosted link and track who watched. Recorder-editors such as Camtasia, ScreenFlow, ScreenPal and Descript add a timeline or text-based editor for training videos that are kept and revised. Guidde turns a browser walkthrough into a narrated how-to guide. CleanShot X is a Mac capture utility with cloud sharing, and OBS Studio is free, open-source recording and streaming software. Seven of the ten bill per user by subscription, ScreenFlow sells a one-time licence, CleanShot X offers both, and OBS Studio costs nothing.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.
Screen recording software captures a computer screen, usually with voice and often a webcam, so that a process can be shown instead of described. Inside a business it carries onboarding walkthroughs, training lessons, support replies, bug reports, product demos and recorded updates that replace a meeting. The market divides by what happens after recording: some products host the video behind a share link with comments and analytics, some provide an editor for videos that are maintained as training assets, and some turn a recording into a written guide.
This comparison covers ten products chosen for that business use rather than for gaming or consumer capture. Features and pricing come from each vendor’s own pricing or product page, checked in October 2026. Pricing models differ widely, from free open-source software and one-time Mac licences to per-creator subscriptions with AI credit allowances, so the useful comparison is the output each product produces and the unit it bills on.
Related pages cover video hosting platforms, interactive product demo software, employee onboarding software and knowledge management software.
Vendor details and trade-offs
Loom is a video messaging product sold by Atlassian. A user records the screen, the camera bubble or both, and the recording is uploaded to a team workspace with a share link, transcript, comments and emoji reactions. The typical business use is replacing a status meeting, code review walkthrough or support reply with a short recorded explanation.
The pricing page lists four plans. Starter is free and allows up to 50 members, 25 videos per person and recordings of up to five minutes at 720p. Business, at $18 per user a month or $180 a year, removes the video and length limits, raises quality to 4K and adds trimming, stitching, custom branding and password-protected videos. Business + AI, at $24 per user a month or $240 a year, adds Loom AI features. Enterprise adds SAML SSO, SCIM, a Salesforce integration and a 99.95% uptime SLA.
Loom also notes that annual subscriptions bought through Atlassian.com are billed differently from those bought on Loom.com, which matters to buyers who already hold other Atlassian licences.
Potential strengths
- Free Starter plan supports up to 50 members for trial use
- Recording quality up to 4K on paid plans
- Integrations listed for Slack, Jira, Confluence, GitHub, Gmail and Notion embeds

- Starter limits recordings to 5 minutes and 25 videos per person
- SSO, SCIM and the Salesforce integration sit on the quoted Enterprise plan

Camtasia is TechSmith's screen recorder and video editor. It is built for recordings that become finished lessons: a presenter captures the screen, camera and audio, then edits them on a multitrack timeline with annotations, transitions, cursor effects and captions. Every plan also includes Snagit, TechSmith's screenshot and step-capture tool, and the Essentials plan and above include Audiate for editing voice recordings as text.
TechSmith sells four annual plans for individuals. Starter covers advanced screen capture with unlimited 4K, 60-frames-per-second recordings but a watermarked editor. Essentials adds text-based editing, filler-word removal, unlimited caption generation, quizzes with SCORM export and audio effects. Create adds AI script generation and generated voiceovers in more than 200 voices. Pro adds avatar generation, translation, audio dubbing and a large premium stock library.
Prices are localised. The store page fetched for this check displayed rupee prices only, so buyers in the United States should read the price on the TechSmith store from their own region. Separate Teams and Business and Education tabs exist for transferable seats and institutions.
Potential strengths
- Snagit screenshot and capture tool is included in every Camtasia plan
- SCORM export suits teams publishing to a learning management system
- Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 14 or newer are supported
Trade-offs
- Starter includes only a watermarked Camtasia Editor
- Individual plans cannot be reassigned; transferable seats require Teams and Business
- Product reference

- Billing terms: Billed yearly; individual plans are non-transferable; cancellation from the TechSmith account; 14-day money-back guarantee

ScreenPal combines a screen and webcam recorder, a video and screenshot editor and video hosting. Every plan includes screenshot capture, drawing while recording, unlimited videos, desktop and mobile creation, video channels and privacy controls.
The free plan limits recordings to 15 minutes and hosting to 10 videos. Deluxe, at $4 a month paid annually, removes the recording limit and adds the full editor, storyboards and speech-to-text captions. Max, at $10 a month, adds ScreenPal AI: automatic captions and transcripts, text-to-speech narration, an AI video generator and unlimited quizzes and polls. Business, at $8 per user a month for three or more users, adds collaboration, team management, advanced integrations and SAML SSO.
The quiz and poll features are what separate ScreenPal from messaging tools for a training buyer, because a learner can be asked questions inside the video. A separate Education plan line serves schools.
Potential strengths
- Lowest published paid entry price on this page
- Recording and editing on desktop and mobile
- Business plan lists SAML SSO, team management and ownership transfer
Trade-offs
- Free plan caps recordings at 15 minutes and 10 hosted videos
- The plans page states prices as paid annually rather than as a monthly option

- Billing terms: Paid annually; Business sold per user with a three-user minimum online, or by quote through sales

Descript is a video and audio editor that treats a recording as a document. Its screen recorder captures the screen and camera, and the result is transcribed so that deleting a sentence from the text removes it from the video. Underlord, Descript's AI co-editor, and tools such as Studio Sound and filler-word removal handle cleanup.
Pricing is per person and limited by media hours and AI credits. The free plan includes 60 media minutes a month. Hobbyist includes 10 media hours and 1080p export; Creator includes 30 hours, 4K export and stock media; Business includes 40 hours, Brand Studio templates, translation and dubbing in more than 30 languages and custom avatars. Annual prices are $16, $24 and $50 per person a month against $24, $35 and $65 monthly.
Enterprise adds opt-out of AI training, custom data retention, SOC 2 Type II, SSO, SCIM and audit logs, which matter to teams recording internal systems.
Potential strengths
- Editing by transcript lowers the skill needed to revise a training video
- Business plan translates and dubs video into more than 30 languages
- Enterprise lists SOC 2 Type II, SSO, SCIM and audit logs
Trade-offs
- Each plan caps media hours and AI credits per editor each month
- Recording is one part of a broader editor, so teams wanting only quick capture pay for editing features

- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Monthly or annual; annual billing advertised as saving up to 35%; priced per person, with additional seats billed separately

Guidde records a user working through a web application and turns the capture into a how-to video with steps, cursor effects, transitions and narration. It sits between screen recording and documentation: the output is meant to show a new employee, a customer or a support agent how to complete a task.
The free plan includes up to 25 how-to videos with a voiceover and share links. Pro, at $19 per creator a month annually or $29 monthly, removes the video limit and the watermark and adds a brand kit, exports to video, PowerPoint and PDF, and blurring. Business, at $39 annually or $59 monthly for up to five creators, adds capture from desktop apps, unlimited text-to-voice, interactive demos, analytics and privacy controls. Enterprise adds Guidde Ask, translation, PII redaction, SSO, SCIM and content review with version control.

- Viewers can be added to a workspace without paying for a seat
- Pro exports to video, PowerPoint and PDF and blurs sensitive information
- Enterprise lists automatic PII redaction and multi-language translation
Trade-offs
- Free and Pro capture web apps only; desktop apps need Business
- Business is limited to five creators before Enterprise
- Product reference
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Monthly or annual; annual billing advertised as saving 34%; billed per creator; viewers added at no extra cost; access continues to the end of the paid period after cancellation

Zight covers screen recording, screenshots, GIFs and request links in one desktop app for Windows and Mac. Its pricing page positions it for onboarding, support and documentation work rather than for long-form production.
The free Share plan records videos, shares screenshots and creates 15-second GIFs. Collaborate, at $12 per user a month billed annually for teams of two or more, adds unlimited AI and smart actions, up to 50 video requests, custom branding and calls to action, and SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliance. All plans include screen, webcam, microphone and system audio recording at up to 4K, a teleprompter and transcription in 106 languages.
Pro costs $13 per user a month billed annually and includes unlimited videos, 4,500 AI credits per user a month, 4K export, team collaboration and analytics. ScreenFlow is Telestream's screen recorder and editor for macOS, supporting Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The store page describes it for software and iPhone demos, video tutorials, presentations and corporate training, with recording and editing in one application.
Unlike most products on this page, ScreenFlow is sold as a one-time licence at $199. Two add-ons are annual: a Stock Media Library of more than 500,000 images, audio and video clips at $99 a year, and Premium Support at $59 a year, which promises email responses within eight business hours and 25% off future upgrades. Bundles combining these are listed, and a separate route offers volume prices for multiple copies.

CleanShot X is a macOS capture utility covering screenshots, annotation and screen recording, with a video editor that applies smart zooms. Recordings and images can be uploaded to CleanShot Cloud for a one-click share link.
Two plans are published. Basic is a $35 one-time purchase with one year of updates, an optional $19 yearly renewal for further updates and 1 GB of cloud storage. Pro costs $10 per user a month billed annually and keeps the app always up to date, with unlimited storage, a custom domain and branding, team management, SSO, SCIM, file access control and password protection. Both plans include 4K quality and video transcription. The app requires macOS 13 or newer, and cloud plans are subject to a fair-use policy.
CleanShot X is also available through a Setapp subscription. It fits teams whose recordings are short and frequent rather than edited courses.

OBS Studio is free, open-source software for video recording and live streaming, maintained by the OBS Project and funded by sponsors and backers. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
OBS works with scenes. Each scene combines sources such as window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams and capture cards, and a user can switch between unlimited scenes with custom transitions. The audio mixer applies per-source filters, including noise gate, noise suppression and gain, and supports VST plugins. The interface is built from rearrangeable docks.
For a business buyer, the trade-off is control against convenience. OBS can record a layout that subscription tools cannot, such as two screens, a camera and a slide feed at once, at no cost. It has no hosting, share links, comments, transcripts or analytics, so finished recordings go to a separate editor and host.
Potential strengths
- No cost for any number of users
- Runs on Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux
- Audio mixer with noise suppression, noise gate and gain filters
Trade-offs
- No built-in hosting, sharing links or viewer analytics
- No built-in editor; recordings are trimmed and captioned in another tool
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Billing terms: None; funded by sponsors and backers

Frequently asked questions
What is screen recording software?
Screen recording software captures what is shown on a computer screen, usually with microphone audio and often a webcam, and saves it as a video. Business products add editing, captions, hosting, share links, viewer analytics and team administration. Uses include onboarding and training videos, support replies, software demos, bug reports and asynchronous updates that replace meetings.
How much does screen recording software cost?
As of October 2026, OBS Studio is free, ScreenFlow is a $199 one-time licence and CleanShot X Basic is $35 one-time. Subscriptions run from ScreenPal Deluxe at $4 a month paid annually to Loom Business at $18 per user a month monthly and Descript Business at $65 per person monthly. Loom, Zight, Guidde, ScreenPal and Descript also have free plans with limits.
Which screen recording tools suit employee training and onboarding?
Camtasia lists quizzes with SCORM export for learning systems on Essentials and higher plans, and ScreenPal lists quizzes and polls on Max and Business. Guidde turns web walkthroughs into narrated step-by-step guides. Descript and Tella speed up editing through transcripts and automatic layouts. Loom and Zight suit short explanations that are shared by link rather than packaged as courses.
What is the difference between screen recording and video messaging software?
A screen recorder captures and saves video; a video messaging tool also uploads it to a hosted page with a share link, comments, transcripts and viewer insights. Loom, Zight and Tella are built around the hosted link. Camtasia, ScreenFlow and OBS Studio produce video files that are published elsewhere, such as a video host or learning system.
Is there free screen recording software for business use?
OBS Studio is free and open source with no paid tier. Loom Starter, Zight Share, Guidde Free, ScreenPal Free and Descript Free are free plans with limits: Loom Starter caps recordings at five minutes and 25 videos per person, ScreenPal Free at 15 minutes and 10 hosted videos, and Guidde Free at 25 how-to videos.
Which screen recording tools run on Mac only?
ScreenFlow and CleanShot X are macOS applications. Camtasia supports Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 14 or newer, OBS Studio supports Windows, macOS and Linux, and Zight documents a desktop app for Windows and Mac. Buyers with a mixed fleet should confirm platform support before standardising on one recorder.
Which tools offer SSO and enterprise controls?
Loom, Zight, Tella and Guidde list SSO and SCIM on their Enterprise plans, and Descript Enterprise lists SSO, SCIM, audit logs and SOC 2 Type II. CleanShot Pro includes SSO and SCIM, and ScreenPal Business lists SAML SSO. Zight Enterprise also lists a HIPAA business associate agreement. OBS Studio and ScreenFlow are desktop applications without a team administration layer.
How were these screen recording products selected and compared?
The ten products were selected for business recording of screens for training, onboarding, support and asynchronous communication. Pricing and features come from each vendor's own pricing or product page, checked in October 2026. No product was installed or tested, no vendor confirmed its entry, and the order of the list is not a ranking.
