Best PCB Design Software (2026): Top 10 Compared

Updated October 2026By StatWharf Editorial10 vendorsMethodology

PCB design software takes an electronic circuit from schematic capture through component placement, copper routing and design rule checks to the Gerber, ODB++ or IPC-2581 files a board fabricator needs. The ten products below split into three groups. Altium Designer, Cadence OrCAD X, Siemens Xpedition Standard, Zuken CR-8000 and Zuken eCADSTAR are commercial suites for professional hardware teams, with constraint management, high-speed routing and ECAD-MCAD exchange. KiCad and EasyEDA are free tools that permit commercial use. Autodesk Fusion, DipTrace and Proteus serve narrower needs: mechanical integration, low-cost perpetual licences and microcontroller simulation.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

PCB design software is used by electronics engineers to draw circuit schematics, place components on a printed circuit board, route copper connections between them and produce the files a fabricator and assembler need. The same tools manage component libraries, check the layout against electrical and manufacturing rules, and increasingly exchange data with mechanical CAD so that the board fits its enclosure.

The market spans three groups. Altium, Cadence, Siemens and Zuken sell professional suites with constraint-driven routing, simulation and team data management, priced per seat per year or by quotation. KiCad and EasyEDA are free and permit commercial use. Autodesk Fusion bundles PCB design into a mechanical CAD subscription, while DipTrace and Labcenter’s Proteus sell perpetual licences with published prices.

The comparison covers ten products. Details come from each vendor’s public product and pricing pages, checked on 13 October 2026.

Autodesk Fusion is a cloud-connected product development platform that combines mechanical CAD, CAM, simulation, data management and electronics design. Its electronics workspace is included in the standard Fusion subscription. Autodesk states that the workspace supports 999 schematic sheets, 16 signal layers and unlimited board area.

The electronics tools cover schematic capture with component libraries and calculators, PCB layout with manual and automatic routing, a design constraint manager, customisable design rule checks and SPICE simulation. Manufacturing outputs include Gerber and ODB++ files, drill files and assembly files. Electronics cooling analysis can simulate thermal behaviour, and a separately licensed Signal Integrity Extension, powered by Ansys, adds electromagnetic analysis of critical signals.

The main difference from dedicated PCB tools is the shared data model. Autodesk describes ECAD and MCAD data as one data set, so a board change appears in the mechanical assembly without exporting STEP, IGES or IDF files. Cloud versioning, milestones and web access let reviewers comment on a design. Teams whose work is mostly high-speed or very dense boards may still compare Fusion's limits with the specialised suites in this comparison.

Potential strengths

  • One subscription covers mechanical CAD, CAM and PCB design
  • Optional Signal Integrity Extension powered by Ansys

Trade-offs

  • Layer count of 16 signal layers may limit very complex boards
  • Cloud-based data model may not suit teams that must keep data on-premises

How to choose a vendor

Match the tool to board complexity, not to the brand

A two-layer board for a sensor or a hobby product does not need the same tool as a 20-layer board with DDR memory, controlled impedance and rigid-flex sections. KiCad, EasyEDA, DipTrace and Fusion cover routine boards well. High-speed constraints, length tuning, HDI via structures and concurrent team layout are where Altium Designer, OrCAD X, Xpedition and CR-8000 differ from entry tools. Buyers should list the layer count, the fastest interfaces and the via technology of the hardest board planned for the next two years, then check each vendor's feature matrix against that list.

Compare licence models and the cost of keeping a seat current

Published prices are quoted on different bases. Altium Develop is US$1,990 a year for one design author. Siemens announced Xpedition Standard at US$2,999 a year. A Cadence reseller lists OrCAD X Standard between US$1,682 and US$6,760 depending on licence type. DipTrace and Proteus sell perpetual licences, but major upgrades or continued updates cost extra. Zuken quotes CR-8000 and eCADSTAR individually. Buyers should compare three-year cost, including maintenance, extra seats and add-ons such as signal integrity or simulation.

Check libraries, file import and manufacturing hand-off

Much of the time spent on a board goes into component symbols, footprints and 3D models. OrCAD X integrates Ultra Librarian, EasyEDA draws on the LCSC parts catalogue, and Xpedition Standard connects to PartQuest. Teams moving from another tool should confirm that importers exist for their existing designs: OrCAD X imports Altium, PADS and Eagle files, and EasyEDA imports Altium, Eagle and KiCad designs. Finally, check which manufacturing outputs each tool writes, such as Gerber, ODB++ or IPC-2581, and whether the board fabricator accepts them.

Frequently asked questions

What is PCB design software?

PCB design software is used to turn an electronic circuit into a printed circuit board that can be manufactured. It normally includes schematic capture, a component library, PCB layout with routing, design rule checks and output of manufacturing files such as Gerber, ODB++ or IPC-2581. Professional suites add constraint management for high-speed signals, simulation, mechanical CAD exchange and data management for teams.

How much does PCB design software cost?

Costs range from free to several thousand US dollars a year per seat. KiCad is free and open source, and EasyEDA's editor is free for commercial use. DipTrace sells perpetual licences from US$75 to US$995. Autodesk Fusion is US$57 a month billed annually. Altium Develop is US$1,990 a year, Siemens announced Xpedition Standard at US$2,999 a year, and a Cadence reseller lists OrCAD X Standard from US$1,682 to US$6,760. Zuken quotes CR-8000 and eCADSTAR individually. Figures were checked in October 2026.

Is there free PCB design software suitable for commercial products?

Yes. KiCad is released under an open-source licence that allows commercial use, and EasyEDA states on its pricing page that boards designed with it may be used commercially and that all editor features are free. DipTrace's freeware edition is limited to non-profit use, and commercial suites such as Altium Develop, OrCAD X, Xpedition Standard and eCADSTAR offer free trials rather than free plans.

Which PCB design tools sell perpetual licences rather than subscriptions?

Among the products compared, DipTrace and Proteus are sold as perpetual licences with published prices. OrCAD X is available as a perpetual floating licence as well as one-year licences, with annual maintenance needed for updates. Altium Develop, Xpedition Standard and Autodesk Fusion are subscriptions. Altium states that older perpetual Altium Designer licences remain usable but do not connect to a Develop workspace.

What features matter for high-speed or complex boards?

Complex boards need constraint-driven routing, differential pair and length tuning, impedance and signal integrity analysis, HDI via structures, rigid-flex support and concurrent team layout. OrCAD X Professional, Altium Designer, Xpedition and CR-8000 document these capabilities, with some offered as higher tiers or add-ons. Buyers should check the feature matrix of the specific tier being priced, because entry tiers often omit timing and concurrent design features.

How do ECAD and MCAD tools work together in PCB design?

ECAD-MCAD integration keeps the board outline, component heights, keepouts and mounting holes consistent between the PCB tool and the mechanical CAD model. Altium, OrCAD X, Xpedition Standard and CR-8000 synchronise with mechanical tools such as SOLIDWORKS, Creo or Siemens NX. Autodesk Fusion takes a different approach, holding electronics and mechanical design in one data set so no file exchange is needed.

Can designs be moved from one PCB tool to another?

Partly. Most tools provide importers for competing formats, but libraries, constraints and design rules rarely transfer perfectly. OrCAD X lists importers for Altium, PADS and Eagle, EasyEDA imports Altium, Eagle and KiCad designs, and Siemens provides an upward path from PADS Professional to Xpedition. Teams planning a migration should test the import of a representative finished board before committing.

How was this comparison compiled?

StatWharf Editorial compared ten PCB design products using each vendor's public product, pricing and documentation pages, and one authorised reseller store for OrCAD X pricing, checked on 13 October 2026. Prices are list prices in US dollars where published. No product was tested hands-on, and no vendor reviewed or confirmed its entry. The order is not a ranking, and inclusion is not an endorsement.
