These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

Graphic design software helps designers, marketers and business owners create logos, illustrations, social media graphics, advertisements, packaging and print material. Products range from professional vector editors, where artwork is drawn from paths, shapes and type, to template-based browser editors that let non-designers customise ready-made layouts with brand colours, stock imagery and AI tools. Photo retouching and RAW processing are a separate category covered by photo editing software.

The market divides into two groups. Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, Inkscape, Figma and Linearity Curve are vector editors, priced from free open source to professional subscriptions, with CorelDRAW also sold as a one-time purchase. Canva, Kittl, VistaCreate and Visme are template platforms, each with a free plan and paid tiers aimed at marketing teams, small businesses, sellers and communicators.

The comparison covers nine products. Details come from each vendor’s public product and pricing pages, checked on 13 October 2026.

Vendor details and trade-offs

Adobe Illustrator

enterpriseadobe.com ↗
Consider forProfessional designers, agencies and in-house creative teams that produce vector logos, illustrations, packaging and print artwork and exchange files with other Adobe users, as Adobe's Illustrator product and plan pages describe
Pricing notesAdobe's Illustrator plans page lists the individual Illustrator plan at US$22.99 a month on an annual commitment billed monthly, excluding tax, with a 7-day free trial. Creative Cloud Pro, which includes Illustrator and more than 20 other apps, is listed at US$69.99 a month on the same terms. Adobe also sells month-to-month and prepaid annual options. Cancelling an annual plan after 14 days incurs a 50% fee on the remaining months (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateThe established vector editor for logos, illustration and print, with up to 1,000 artboards, 3D Revolve for packaging and image tracing

Adobe Illustrator is Adobe's vector graphics application and part of Creative Cloud. Adobe positions it for logos, illustrations, typography, packaging and layouts that must scale without losing quality. The plan page states that the individual plan includes the full version of Illustrator for desktop, iPad and web, plus the Adobe Express Premium plan, 100GB of cloud storage and a monthly allowance of generative credits for Firefly-powered features.

Adobe's feature list covers shape creation and combination, vector drawing, professional typography, effects, image tracing and recolouring of imported photos, the 3D Revolve effect for packaging mockups, Adobe Stock templates and up to 1,000 artboards on a single canvas. The desktop apps are installed locally and need an internet connection once every 99 days to validate the membership. A licence can be installed on two computers, Mac, Windows or one of each.

Illustrator is sold only as a subscription. The annual plan has a 14-day money-back period, after which Adobe charges a 50% fee for the remaining months on cancellation; the month-to-month plan can be stopped without a fee. Buyers who also need Photoshop, InDesign or Acrobat Pro can compare the single-app price against Creative Cloud Pro.

Potential strengths

  • Widely used format and workflow across agencies, printers and freelancers
  • Bundled with the Adobe Express Premium plan and available on desktop, iPad and web

Trade-offs

  • Subscription only; Adobe states Illustrator is not available without a membership
  • Early cancellation of an annual plan carries a 50% fee on the remaining months

Canva

smbcanva.com ↗
Consider forMarketing teams, small businesses, educators and individuals without formal design training who build social posts, presentations, ads and print pieces from templates, as Canva's pricing page describes
Pricing notesCanva's pricing page lists Free at US$0, Pro at US$180 a year for one person and Business at US$250 a year per person, with monthly billing also offered and a stated saving of 16% on yearly billing. Enterprise pricing is by contact with sales. Prices exclude applicable tax, and qualifying schools and non-profits can use most premium features free (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateMore than 3.6 million templates and 141 million premium assets, Brand Kits, social scheduling and access to Affinity on every plan

Canva is a browser and app-based design platform built around a drag-and-drop editor and more than 1,000 design types. The pricing page lists 1.6 million templates and 4.7 million assets on the free plan, rising to 3.6 million templates and 141 million premium photos, videos, graphics and audio files on paid plans.

Pro, for one person, adds premium tools such as resize, translate and background removal, five Brand Kits, social content scheduling, 100GB of cloud storage and a larger AI allowance. Business, priced per person, adds collaboration and team admin tools, 100 Brand Kits with approvals, 500GB of storage, access to the Flourish data visualisation tool and a 10% discount on Canva Print orders where available. Enterprise adds SSO and SCIM provisioning, custom apps, 1,000 Brand Kits with tiered approvals, 1TB of storage and, for customers with 150 or more seats, a dedicated success manager.

Every plan lists access to Affinity, the professional design suite Canva owns, with AI features in Affinity on paid tiers. AI use draws on a shared allowance across Standard, Premium and Ultra AI, and Canva notes that higher tiers consume more of it.

Potential strengths

  • A usable free plan with 1.6 million templates and 5GB of storage
  • Business plan adds 100 Brand Kits with approvals and 500GB of storage

Trade-offs

  • AI features draw on a shared allowance that varies by tool and tier
  • Template-led editing offers less precise vector control than a dedicated vector editor

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite

mid-marketcoreldraw.com ↗
Consider forPrint, signage and production designers, and small businesses producing in-house marketing, who want vector illustration, page layout and photo editing in one suite with a perpetual-licence option, as Corel's product page describes
Pricing notesCorel's product page lists CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2026 at US$269 a year on the annual plan, US$39 a month on the monthly plan, and US$549 as a one-time purchase. These are list prices; the page periodically shows promotional discounts. Subscriptions include 2,000 AI credits a month; the one-time purchase includes 2,000 credits once (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateVector illustration, page layout, Corel PHOTO-PAINT and font management in one suite, with text-to-vector generative AI

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is Corel's professional design package for Windows, Mac and the web. The 2026 release bundles four applications: CorelDRAW for vector illustration and page layout, Corel PHOTO-PAINT for image editing and pixel-based design, Corel Font Manager for organising fonts without installing them, and CorelDRAW Web, a browser-based editor that saves projects to the cloud and is available to subscribers only.

The 2026 version adds generative AI with text-to-vector, which Corel brands as Artist Intelligence. Subscribers receive 2,000 AI credits a month, while the one-time purchase includes 2,000 credits in total. Bundled content includes 7,000 clipart images, digital images and vehicle wrap templates, 1,000 high-resolution photos, more than 1,000 fonts with integrated access to over 1,700 Google Fonts families, over 200 templates (plus 600 more for subscribers), over 600 fills and Pantone Color Libraries at no extra cost.

Corel aims the suite at branding and marketing, advertising and publishing, and small businesses producing material in-house. Its vehicle wrap templates and layout tools reflect long use in signage and print production. The availability of a perpetual licence is a material difference from Adobe Illustrator.

Potential strengths

  • One-time purchase option for buyers who avoid subscriptions
  • Integrated Pantone Color Libraries and a large bundled clipart, font and template library

Trade-offs

  • CorelDRAW Web and additional templates are subscriber-exclusive
  • AI credits are a one-off allowance on the perpetual licence

Inkscape

open-sourceinkscape.org ↗
Consider forIndividuals, educators, non-profits and technical illustrators who need a capable vector editor at no cost on Linux, Windows or macOS and work in SVG, as the Inkscape project's About and release pages describe
Pricing notesInkscape is free and open source software licensed under the GPL. There are no paid plans or licence fees. The project is a member of the Software Freedom Conservancy, a US 501(c)(3) non-profit, and accepts tax-deductible donations (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateSVG-native editing with import and export of AI, EPS, PDF, PS and PNG, extensible with add-ons

Inkscape is a free and open source vector graphics editor for GNU/Linux, Windows and macOS. The project describes it as widely used for artistic and technical illustration, including cartoons, clip art, logos, typography, diagramming and flowcharting. It uses SVG, the standard vector format supported by web browsers, as its main file format, and imports and exports SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, PS and PNG.

Inkscape 1.4.4, released on 6 May 2026, is a maintenance release with 20 crash fixes, more than 25 bug fixes and performance improvements, a new palette and installers for Windows on Arm. The project describes it as a bridge release: it can convert files that use the multipage format planned for Inkscape 1.5 back to the current format. Release notes list known issues, including extensions not working on macOS when Inkscape is started from the command line.

Inkscape is developed by its contributors, who each retain copyright, and is a member of the Software Freedom Conservancy. Help comes from the community and from published learning materials. Users can extend the program with add-ons.

Potential strengths

  • No cost and no account, licence server or subscription
  • Runs on GNU/Linux, Windows and macOS, including Windows on Arm

Trade-offs

  • Support comes from the community rather than a vendor support desk
  • No built-in stock library, template marketplace or AI generation

Figma

mid-marketfigma.com ↗
Consider forProduct, brand and marketing teams that already collaborate in Figma and want illustration and on-brand marketing assets in the same files, as Figma's pricing and Figma Draw pages describe
Pricing notesFigma's pricing page, in USD, lists Starter free. Professional costs $16 a month for a full seat, $12 for a Dev seat and $3 for a Collab seat, with monthly and annual billing options shown. Organization, billed annually, costs $55, $25 and $5 a month for full, Dev and Collab seats; Enterprise, billed annually, costs $90, $35 and $5. Paid plans let others view and comment without buying seats (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateIllustration, design and marketing assets in one real-time collaborative browser workspace, with Figma Draw and Figma Buzz

Figma is a browser-based collaborative design platform best known for interface design, now sold as a set of products including Figma Design, Figma Draw, FigJam, Figma Slides, Figma Sites and Figma Buzz. For graphic design, Figma Draw is the relevant product. It adds a dedicated illustration workspace inside the same files a team already uses.

The Figma Draw page lists vector brushes, including custom brushes, texture and noise fills, progressive blur, dynamic strokes with adjustable frequency and wiggle, variable-width strokes, image vectorising with multi-vector editing, lasso and colour reduction, text on a path for badges and logos, and repeat transforms for patterns. Illustrations can be built from components for bulk editing, and strokes and fills can be bound to colour variables to produce several colour themes of one illustration.

Pricing is per seat type. Full seats include every product and a monthly AI credit allowance; Dev seats target developer handoff; Collab seats suit people who mainly comment or use FigJam and Slides. Figma Buzz, in beta, is available on all seats. On paid plans others can view and comment on files without a paid seat.

Potential strengths

  • Free viewers and commenters on paid plans
  • Illustration tools sit in the same files as a team's components and colour variables

Trade-offs

  • Pricing is per seat type, so costs scale with every full editor
  • Built primarily for interface design; print workflows are less central than in Illustrator or CorelDRAW

Kittl

smbkittl.com ↗
Consider forPrint-on-demand sellers, Etsy-style shops, small businesses and agencies that create product graphics, mockups and listing visuals and need commercial rights, as Kittl's homepage and pricing page describe
Pricing notesKittl's pricing page lists a free plan and three paid plans per editor: Pro at $15 a month or $144 a year ($12 a month), Expert at $35 a month or $312 a year ($26 a month), and Max at $65 a month or $576 a year ($48 a month). Viewers are free; each additional editor is charged at the plan rate. Plans renew automatically and can be cancelled at any time (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCommercial licence for up to 500,000 reproductions on Pro and Expert, plus listing-ready mockups and AI models from several providers

Kittl is a browser-based design platform aimed at people with products to sell. Its homepage names three audiences: print-on-demand sellers, small businesses and agencies. The editor combines customisable templates, text effects, listing-ready mockups, a background remover, and AI image and video generation using models from OpenAI, Google, ByteDance, Ideogram, Recraft, Black Forest Labs and Kling.

The pricing page states that Kittl's 10,000 or more premium templates and mockups are created by independent designers and that part of each subscription is paid to them. Paid plans add premium templates and assets, high-resolution and vector exports, more AI tokens, features such as Kittl Flows, larger project limits and commercial licensing.

Licensing is a material point for sellers. The free plan is for personal use only. Pro and Expert carry a commercial licence covering up to 500,000 copies across packaging, marketing, digital media and print, and Kittl states that its business plans include an enhanced licence beyond that limit. Monthly tokens power AI features and do not roll over; Expert and Max also receive 200 and 600 daily tokens. Cancelling does not delete designs, although vector export locks.

Potential strengths

  • Paid plans include a commercial licence suited to selling printed products
  • Free plan lets users preview most Pro features with light usage limits

Trade-offs

  • The free plan is for personal use only, with no commercial rights
  • Monthly AI tokens do not roll over

Linearity Curve

smblinearity.io ↗
Consider forIllustrators, freelance designers and small teams working on Mac, iPad or iPhone who want a vector editor with a simpler interface plus animation and AI brand tools, as Linearity's Curve and pricing pages describe
Pricing notesLinearity's pricing page lists a free plan and paid plans per month, tax included: Pro at $8 against a struck-through $10, Studio at $25 against $30, and Business at $67 against $80. Enterprise is priced by company size with custom billing and contract. Each plan pairs features with an AI credit allowance, and plans are also sold through the App Store (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluatePressure-sensitive vector brushes, shape builder and one-click Auto Trace, with unlimited Curve and Move on Pro

Linearity Curve is a vector design application for Mac, iPad and iPhone from Linearity, which also makes the animation app Linearity Move. Linearity states that Curve is built for illustrators and graphic designers who find established tools bloated and hard to learn.

The Curve page lists pressure-sensitive vector brushes, linear, radial and mesh-style gradients, non-destructive vector effects such as shadows and blurs, a pen tool, node tool, smart shapes, corner radius control and a shape builder for combining and subtracting shapes. Typography tools cover tracking, kerning, text on a path and custom fonts. Raster tools include AI background removal, subject detection and a magic eraser, and Auto Trace converts images, logos or sketches into editable vector paths. Linearity also highlights print-ready output.

The free plan includes vector editing, AI-assisted drawing, 2,400 welcome credits valid for seven days, one brand and 5GB of storage. Pro adds advanced export and unlimited Curve and Move. Studio adds unlimited brands and 100GB of storage, Business adds 500GB and unlimited AI brand setups, and Enterprise adds SSO and a dedicated account manager.

Potential strengths

  • Lowest published paid entry among the vector editors here
  • Pro includes unlimited use of both Curve for vector design and Move for keyframe animation

Trade-offs

  • Runs on Apple devices only: Mac, iPad and iPhone
  • Several Studio and Business features are labelled as coming soon

VistaCreate

Consider forSmall businesses, social media managers and small marketing teams that create social posts, ads and print graphics from templates and want several users on one subscription, as VistaCreate's Pro page describes
Pricing notesVistaCreate's Pro page lists Starter at $0 for one seat and Pro at $10 USD a month when paid yearly or $13 USD a month when paid monthly, for up to 10 seats. The page states that yearly billing saves 23% (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateOne Pro subscription for up to 10 seats, with infinite Brand Kits, generative AI and a one-click resizer

VistaCreate is a browser-based template design tool for social media, advertising, web and print graphics. Its features page lists a circle crop tool, AI object remover, AI background remover, image combining for collages and multi-page projects, photo enhancement, curved text, filters, photo grids, a picture outline maker for stickers, designer-selected colour and font styles and photo frames, alongside video editing.

The free Starter plan, for one seat, includes more than 100,000 design templates, over one million photos, videos and vectors, one Brand Kit, 10GB of storage, design objects, fonts and music, and social media scheduling. Pro adds more than 200,000 templates, a library of over 170 million photos, videos and vectors, infinite Brand Kits, generative AI for images and text, a sticker maker, a one-click resizer, unlimited storage and version history.

VistaCreate's main pricing difference is that one Pro subscription covers up to 10 seats. A small team that would pay per person on Canva Business or per editor on Kittl may find the total cost lower, provided its work fits a template-based editor rather than vector drawing.

Potential strengths

  • Team pricing covers up to 10 seats without per-seat charges
  • Free Starter plan includes 100K+ templates, a Brand Kit and social media scheduling

Trade-offs

  • No vector path editing comparable to a dedicated vector editor
  • No published enterprise tier for larger organisations

Visme

smbvisme.co ↗
Consider forMarketing, sales enablement, training and internal communications teams that produce infographics, presentations, reports and data-heavy visuals rather than illustration, as Visme's pricing page describes
Pricing notesVisme's pricing page lists a free Basic plan, Starter at US$12.25 a month billed $147 a year, and Pro at US$24.75 a month billed $297 a year, each for one licence. Enterprise has custom pricing for 10 or more users, with SSO, two-factor authentication and a dedicated customer success manager (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateData widgets and charts, brand governance, analytics and export to HTML5, PPTX and SCORM/xAPI for training content

Visme is a browser-based tool for presentations, infographics, documents and other visual content. Its pricing page describes a free plan with a limited set of templates, assets and AI tools, and paid plans that add brand governance, analytics, premium templates and team collaboration.

The plan comparison lists unlimited projects on every plan, with storage of 500MB on Basic, 1GB on Starter, 10GB on Pro and 25GB per user on Enterprise. Basic is limited to 50 slides or pages per project; paid plans are unlimited. Paid plans remove the Visme logo from projects and add premium assets, a Brand Kit, a file manager, and charts and data widgets. Basic downloads JPG, PNG and PDF; paid plans add MP4, GIF, PPTX and HTML5, and SCORM and xAPI export is available for e-learning content.

Visme suits teams whose graphic design work is mainly communication: reports, sales collateral, training modules and data visualisation. Buyers who need to draw logos, illustrations or packaging should pair it with a vector editor. Enterprise adds personalised training and onboarding, SSO and two-factor authentication, and a dedicated customer success manager.

Potential strengths

  • Combines graphics, presentations, documents and charts in one editor
  • Paid plans export to MP4, GIF, PPTX and HTML5 as well as JPG, PNG and PDF

Trade-offs

  • Free Basic plan is limited to 500MB of storage and 50 slides or pages per project
  • Not a vector illustration tool for logos or packaging

How to choose a vendor

Decide whether the team draws artwork or assembles it from templates

A designer creating a logo, an illustration or a packaging dieline needs precise vector tools: pen and node editing, shape building, typography control and print-ready export. Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape, Figma and Linearity Curve are built for that work. A marketer producing weekly social posts, flyers or product listings usually gets further with a template editor such as Canva, Kittl, VistaCreate or Visme, where brand kits, stock libraries and one-click resizing matter more than path editing. Many organisations run one of each.

Compare the full cost, including seats and billing terms

Published prices are quoted on different bases. Illustrator is US$22.99 a month on an annual commitment billed monthly, and Adobe charges a 50% fee on the remaining months if an annual plan is cancelled after 14 days. CorelDRAW offers a US$269 annual plan or a US$549 one-time purchase. Canva Business is US$250 a year per person, Figma charges per seat type, and VistaCreate Pro covers up to 10 seats for one price. Buyers should multiply by the number of editors and compare over three years.

Check file formats, platforms and commercial-use terms

Agencies and printers often still expect AI, EPS, PDF or SVG files. Inkscape works natively in SVG and imports AI and EPS; Linearity Curve runs on Mac, iPad and iPhone only; CorelDRAW runs on Windows, Mac and the web. Template platforms set licence limits on stock assets and on AI-generated output: Kittl's free plan, for example, is for personal use only. Teams selling printed products or client work should read each vendor's licence page before committing.

Frequently asked questions

What is graphic design software?

Graphic design software is used to create visual material such as logos, illustrations, social media posts, advertisements, packaging, presentations and print layouts. It ranges from professional vector editors, where designers draw artwork from paths, shapes and type, to template-based editors, where users customise ready-made designs with brand colours, fonts, stock images and AI tools. Photo retouching and RAW processing are usually handled by separate photo editing software.

How much does graphic design software cost?

Inkscape is free. Adobe Illustrator is US$22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, and CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is US$269 a year or US$549 as a one-time purchase. Template platforms cost less per user: Canva Pro is US$180 a year, Kittl Pro $144 a year, Visme Starter US$147 a year, and VistaCreate Pro $10 a month paid yearly for up to 10 seats. Figures were checked in October 2026 on each vendor's own page.

What is the difference between vector and template-based design software?

Vector editors such as Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape, Figma and Linearity Curve create artwork from mathematical paths that scale to any size, which suits logos, illustration, signage and packaging. Template-based editors such as Canva, Kittl, VistaCreate and Visme start from pre-designed layouts and stock libraries and focus on speed, brand consistency and resizing across formats. They are faster for routine marketing graphics but give less precise control over shapes.

Is there free graphic design software?

Inkscape is fully free and open source with no paid tiers. Canva, Figma, Kittl, Linearity, VistaCreate and Visme offer free plans with limits on templates, storage, AI use or exports. Kittl's free plan is for personal use only, and Visme's free plan caps storage at 500MB. Adobe offers a 7-day free trial of Illustrator rather than a free plan.

Can graphic design software be bought without a subscription?

Among the products in this comparison, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2026 is sold as a one-time purchase at a US$549 list price, alongside annual and monthly plans, and Inkscape is free. Adobe states that Illustrator is available only with a membership plan. The template platforms and Figma are subscription services, although each has a free tier.

Which tools are suitable for a small team on a budget?

Pricing structure matters as much as the headline price. VistaCreate Pro covers up to 10 seats for one price, while Canva Business is charged per person and Kittl per editor. Figma's Collab seat costs $3 a month on Professional for people who mainly review. Inkscape costs nothing for vector work. Teams should count editors and reviewers separately before comparing totals.

Can designs and AI-generated images be used commercially?

It depends on the plan and the vendor's licence. Kittl's Pro and Expert plans carry a commercial licence for up to 500,000 copies, while its free plan is personal use only. Adobe states that Firefly outputs may generally be used commercially unless a beta feature is designated otherwise. Buyers selling printed products or delivering client work should read the licence terms for stock assets and AI output on each vendor's site.

How was this comparison compiled?
