A transportation management system (TMS) plans, executes and settles freight moves for shippers and logistics providers. This page collects 30 figures that describe the market a TMS works in. Every figure links to the government body, industry body, company filing or survey publisher that first released it. For a comparison of the products themselves, see the StatWharf comparison of transportation management systems.

Freight market
United States
The US Bureau of Transportation Statistics publishes the Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI). The index measures the monthly volume of freight moved by for-hire carriers. The series used here is the seasonally adjusted index distributed by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
| Month | Freight TSI (2000 = 100) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| July 2025 | 138.5 | BTS via FRED, checked October 2026 |
| March 2026 | 139.3 | BTS via FRED, checked October 2026 |
| July 2026 | 135.7 | BTS via FRED, checked October 2026 |
March 2026 is the highest reading of 2026 so far. The July 2026 reading is about 2% below the July 2025 reading. For a TMS buyer, a softer for-hire volume trend usually means more carrier capacity is available to tender to.
The American Trucking Associations (ATA) released its Freight Transportation Forecast 2024 to 2035 on January 16, 2025. It states the following.
- Trucks moved 72.7% of US freight tonnage in 2024.
- Trucks earned 76.9% of US freight revenue in 2024.
- Total truck tonnage was an estimated 11.27 billion tons in 2024.
- Trucking industry revenue was an estimated $906 billion at the start of the forecast period.
- ATA projected truck volumes to grow 1.6% in 2025 after two years of decline.
The US Census Bureau runs the Commodity Flow Survey every five years. Results for 2022 were released on June 26, 2025.
| Measure, 2022 | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Total tons of goods shipped in the US | 12.2 billion tons | US Census Bureau, June 2025 |
| Total value of goods shipped | $18.0 trillion | US Census Bureau, June 2025 |
| Truck share of tonnage | 68.1% | US Census Bureau, June 2025 |
| Truck share of value | 73.5% | US Census Bureau, June 2025 |
The Census share of tonnage for trucks differs from the ATA share. The two bodies use different scopes. The Census survey counts shipments from surveyed establishments in 2022. ATA estimates all freight tonnage, with S&P Global Market Intelligence, for 2024.
European Union
Eurostat published 2025 road freight results on July 31, 2026.
- EU road freight reached 1,886 billion tonne-kilometres in 2025, up 0.9% on 2024.
- Road freight weight came to 13.3 billion tonnes in 2025.
Logistics costs
The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) publishes the annual State of Logistics Report. Kearney writes it and Penske Logistics presents it. The 2026 edition, “Forged in Disruption”, was released in June 2026 and covers 2025 data.
| Report edition | US business logistics costs | Share of US GDP | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 edition | $2.4 trillion | 7.8% | CSCMP, June 2026 |
| 2025 edition | $2.6 trillion | 8.7% | CSCMP, as restated June 2026 |
Business logistics costs include transportation, inventory carrying and administration. Transportation is the part a TMS addresses directly. A lower share of GDP means logistics took a smaller slice of the economy in 2025 than the year before. It does not mean each shipper paid less.
TMS adoption and priorities
Independent, public measures of TMS adoption are scarce. The most recent large survey with published figures comes from a TMS vendor. The figures below are vendor-reported by Descartes Systems Group. Descartes ran the survey with SAPIO Research and released it on September 15, 2025. The sample was 616 participants in the United States, Canada and Western Europe, split evenly between shippers and logistics service providers. It included Descartes customers and non-customers.
| Finding (Descartes, vendor-reported, September 2025) | Share of respondents |
|---|---|
| See transportation management as a differentiator or competitive weapon | 81% |
| Report fully automated transportation processes | 17% |
| Use generative AI in operations | 96% |
| Plan to increase TMS IT spending | 80% |

A vendor survey has an interest in showing demand for its own category. The figures describe the respondents, not every shipper. The gap between the 17% that report full automation and the 80% that plan more TMS spending is the clearest signal in the data. Many firms still run parts of transportation by hand and plan to spend to change that.
TMS vendor financials
Several TMS vendors are public companies. Their filings give audited or company-reported revenue for their logistics software. Most of them sell more than a TMS, so revenue covers their wider supply chain or logistics portfolios.
| Company | Period | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Descartes Systems Group | Fiscal 2026, ended January 31, 2026 | $729.0 million revenue, up 12% | Company release, March 11, 2026 |
| Descartes Systems Group | Fiscal 2026 | 93% of revenue from services | Company release, March 11, 2026 |
| Manhattan Associates | Calendar 2025 | $1,081.4 million total revenue | SEC Form 8-K exhibit, January 27, 2026 |
| Manhattan Associates | Calendar 2025 | $408.1 million cloud subscription revenue | SEC Form 8-K exhibit, January 27, 2026 |
| Trimble, Transportation and Logistics segment | Calendar 2025 | $549.2 million segment revenue | Company release, February 10, 2026 |
| WiseTech Global | Fiscal 2025, ended June 30, 2025 | $778.7 million total revenue (USD) | ASX announcement, August 27, 2025 |
Source: company filings and releases listed in the table above. Fiscal periods differ, and most figures cover more than TMS products.
Notes on the table:
- Descartes reports in US dollars under US GAAP. Its fiscal year ends on January 31.
- Manhattan Associates sells warehouse, transportation and omnichannel software. The revenue figure covers the whole company.
- Trimble’s figure covers its whole Transportation and Logistics segment, not only TMS products. Trimble reports the segment alongside two other segments.
- WiseTech Global completed its acquisition of e2open on August 4, 2025. That date falls after the close of fiscal 2025. The fiscal 2025 revenue therefore excludes e2open.
Method
- Data window. Figures date from 2022 to 2026. The page prefers the most recent release of each series. The 2022 Commodity Flow Survey is the latest edition of that survey. The ATA figures come from the forecast released in January 2025, the latest edition found at the check date.
- Primary sources only. Each figure links to the body that first published it. These are government agencies (US Census Bureau, Eurostat, and BTS data distributed by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis), industry bodies (CSCMP, ATA), company filings and releases, and the survey publisher. Statistics aggregators and articles that re-quote figures were not used. Vendor survey results are labeled as vendor-reported with the vendor named.
- Checks. StatWharf Editorial opened each source in October 2026 and checked that the figure appears there with the stated date. Figures not found on a primary source were left out. This includes the 2026 MHI Annual Industry Report adoption figures and analyst market-size estimates, whose primary releases were not reachable at the check date.
- No modeling. The page reports published figures only. The approximate 2% change in the Freight TSI is a direct comparison of two published index values. No other value is calculated or estimated.
Using these figures
The figures describe the freight volume, cost base and public vendors that TMS buyers deal with. They do not rank products. Buyers comparing specific systems by fit, pricing disclosure and deployment model can use the StatWharf comparison of transportation management systems.
