Best Time Tracking Software (2026): Top 9 Compared

Updated October 2026By StatWharf Editorial9 vendorsMethodology

Time tracking software records the hours people spend on clients, projects and tasks, then turns them into timesheets, reports, invoices and payroll data. The nine products below fall into four groups. Toggl Track, Clockify, TimeCamp and Everhour are per-seat trackers with timers, timesheets and reports, and three of them offer a free plan. Harvest pairs time tracking with invoicing and payments for client-billing teams. Hubstaff adds activity levels, screenshots and payroll payments for distributed and outsourced teams. Timely and Memtime capture activity automatically in the background and help people turn it into time entries, while ClickTime is aimed at finance teams that need approved hours mapped to cost codes. Eight of the nine publish list prices for every self-serve plan; ClickTime publishes only its starting price.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

Time tracking software records the hours people work and attaches them to clients, projects and tasks, so that a business can bill accurately, pay staff correctly, keep projects on budget and see where effort goes. Buyers range from freelancers and small agencies to remote teams, professional services firms and finance departments that need approved labour data.

The category splits by how time is captured and what it is used for. Timer and timesheet tools suit teams that log their own hours. Billing-focused tools add invoicing and payments. Monitoring-oriented tools add activity levels and screenshots for distributed teams. Automatic trackers record activity in the background and help people turn it into entries, and finance-led platforms map hours to cost codes and approvals.

The comparison covers nine products across those groups. Pricing comes from each vendor’s public pricing page, checked on 12 October 2026. Eight vendors publish list prices for every self-serve plan; ClickTime publishes only its starting price.

Toggl Track

smbtoggl.com ↗
Consider forFreelancers, consultants, creative agencies and professional services teams that need billable time, team reports and project profitability, as Toggl's pricing and product pages describe
Pricing notesFree $0 for a limited number of users. Starter $9 per user per month billed annually or $12 monthly. Premium $16 per user per month billed annually or $24 monthly. Enterprise is quote-based. Add-ons: Time Off Pro $2 and Capacity Management $5 per user per month. 30-day free trial on paid plans (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateTime can be copied from connected calendars, and background tracking of apps and websites stays private to each person until they choose to log it

Toggl Track is the time tracking product from Toggl, which now sells it on a single pricing page alongside project planning and capacity tools. People can track time with a live timer or enter it manually, from the web app, desktop and mobile apps or a browser extension, and the product page lists more than 100 integrations, including Jira, Salesforce and Asana, plus a public API.

The calendar view is the product's most prominent feature. It connects Google and Outlook calendars so that meetings and blocked time can be turned into time entries without retyping them. Background tracking can record app and website use, but the product page states that this activity remains private to the person unless they convert it into entries for reporting.

The plans step up from personal tracking to team finance. Free covers timers, focus mode, simple task planning, calendar integrations and individual reports. Starter adds billable rates, team reports, timeline views, tags, milestones and basic capacity settings such as public holidays and paid time off. Premium adds labour cost and profitability reports, fixed-fee projects, project dashboards comparing actual time with estimates, timesheet approvals, Jira and Asana integrations and single sign-on.

Two paid add-ons cover leave management and capacity forecasting.

Potential strengths

  • Free plan includes manual and real-time timers, calendar integrations and personal reports
  • Premium adds labour costs, profitability reports, fixed-fee projects, timesheet approvals and SSO

Trade-offs

  • The free plan's user limit is not stated as a number on the pricing page
  • Time off management and capacity forecasting are paid add-ons on top of the plan price

Kiosk-only limited seats cost $0.79 to $2.39 annually. Every active or invited user occupies a seat (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateA five-tier ladder from a free plan to Enterprise, plus discounted limited seats for staff who only clock in through a shared kiosk

Clockify is a time tracker and timesheet app from CAKE.com, which also makes the Plaky project management and Pumble team chat products. Its site describes it as used by more than seven million people.

Time can be recorded with a timer, a weekly timesheet, a calendar view, an auto tracker that records apps and websites, or a clock-in kiosk on a shared device. Reports break tracked time down by project, client and person, and rates turn hours into earnings, cost and profit.

The pricing ladder is fine-grained. Basic adds administration tools such as adding time for others, required fields, bulk edit, the kiosk, time audit and project templates. Standard adds time off, invoicing and recurring invoices, timesheet approval, locked timesheets, attendance and overtime reports, reminders, a manager role, rounding and QuickBooks integration. Pro adds activity monitoring, scheduling and forecasting, expenses, labour cost and profit, budgets and estimates, custom fields, multiple currencies, GPS tracking, kiosk photo capture and a choice of data region in the EU, UK, US or Australia. Enterprise adds single sign-on, custom subdomains, SCIM provisioning, audit logs and the ability for administrators to log in as users for troubleshooting.

For shift workers who only clock in, Clockify sells limited kiosk seats at a fraction of the full seat price.

Potential strengths

  • Free plan includes the timer, timesheet, auto tracker, calendar, idle detection and reports for up to 5 users
  • Standard adds invoicing, timesheet approval, time off, attendance and overtime, and QuickBooks integration

Pricing notesFree $0 with 1 seat and 2 projects. Teams from $9 per seat per month billed annually ($108 per seat a year) or from $11 monthly, with unlimited seats; additional invoices, projects, clients and tasks are billed on usage. Enterprise from $14 per seat per month billed annually ($168 a year) or from $17.50 monthly. Enterprise Plus is custom-priced. Annual payment carries a 20% discount; 30-day free trial without a card. Prices in USD (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateInvoicing and online payments sit in the same product as the timesheet, with accounting integrations to QuickBooks Online and Xero

Harvest is time tracking and invoicing software for client-service businesses. Harvest Forecast, a companion product, handles team scheduling.

Staff record time against clients, projects and tasks from the web, desktop and mobile apps, or from inside tools such as Asana and Slack. Expenses are tracked alongside time. Reports show where hours went by client, project, task and person, and the Teams plan adds capacity tracking so managers can see who is over- or under-booked.

Billing is the reason many firms look at Harvest. Tracked time and expenses become invoices, which clients can pay online through Stripe, and invoices and payments sync with QuickBooks Online and Xero. Deel is also listed among the accounting and payment integrations.

Teams and Enterprise have a base per-seat rate that covers core features, and additional invoices, projects, clients and tasks are billed on usage as the account grows. Enterprise adds unlimited custom reports, profitability reporting by client, project, task and team, timesheet approvals, an activity log of time entry changes, required notes on entries and SAML single sign-on.

Potential strengths

  • Teams plan includes team reporting, capacity tracking, invoicing and integrations with Stripe, QuickBooks Online, Xero and Deel
  • Enterprise adds custom reports, profitability reporting, timesheet approvals, an activity log and SAML SSO

Trade-offs

  • Teams and Enterprise prices are starting figures; extra invoices, projects, clients and tasks are billed on usage

Pricing notesStarter $4.99 per seat per month billed annually or $7 monthly. Grow $7.50 annually or $9 monthly. Team $10 annually or $12 monthly. Enterprise $25 per seat per month, with sales contact for custom setup. Add-ons such as Insights, Tasks and Silent app are $2.50 per seat per month annually or $3 monthly, Locations $3.33 or $4, and Data retention $1.67 or $2. A Free plan is also listed. 14-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCombines time tracking with activity levels, screenshots and app and URL usage, then pays teams for the hours tracked

Hubstaff is time tracking and workforce analytics software, and its pricing page states that it is used by 140,000 people globally. Its product menu groups features into time tracking, productivity monitoring, workforce analytics and global payments, and its solutions pages address remote, hybrid, on-site and field teams as well as BPOs, virtual assistant services and call centres.

Time tracking covers automated timesheets, project and task tracking, attendance and shift tracking, time off and GPS job sites that clock people in and out automatically. Monitoring features are what distinguish Hubstaff from timer-first tools: activity levels based on keyboard and mouse use, optional screenshots, idle time detection and app and URL usage.

Tracked hours then feed money workflows: project cost budgets, invoices to clients, overtime rules and payments to team members through integrations such as Wise, PayPal, Gusto and Deel.

The plans step up from Starter, with time tracking, timesheets, limited reports and activity levels, to Grow, which adds full reports, one integration and the Tasks add-on, and Team, which adds unlimited screenshots and app and URL tracking, scheduling, expenses, daily limits and unlimited integrations. Enterprise includes the Silent app, Locations, Insights and Tasks add-ons and adds HIPAA compliance, higher public API limits and ACH payment.

Potential strengths

  • Plan ladder from Starter to Enterprise with add-ons that can be bought individually on lower tiers
  • More than 35 integrations listed, including Jira, Asana, QuickBooks, Gusto, Deel, Wise and PayPal

Trade-offs

  • Activity monitoring and screenshots may not suit teams that prefer private, self-reported time
  • Several capabilities, such as GPS locations and the silent app, are paid add-ons below Enterprise

TimeCamp

smbtimecamp.com ↗
Consider forSmall and mid-sized teams that want unlimited free users for basic tracking and inexpensive paid tiers for invoicing, budgets and approvals, plus enterprises that need self-hosted deployment, as TimeCamp's pricing page describes
Pricing notesFree $0 with unlimited users and projects. Starter $3.99 per user per month billed annually or $5.49 month-to-month. Premium $6.99 annually or $9.99 monthly. Ultimate $9.99 annually or $13.99 monthly. Enterprise on request. The AI Time Tracker is billed separately by token usage, which TimeCamp estimates at about $6 per user per month; the trial includes $10 in credits (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateAn unlimited-user free plan, low paid tiers and an Enterprise option to self-host or run in a private cloud

TimeCamp is time tracking software sold on a four-step paid ladder above a free plan, with an Enterprise edition for larger organisations.

The free plan allows unlimited users and projects and includes timesheets, web, desktop and mobile apps and two-factor authentication. Time can be recorded manually, with a timer, or automatically, and an AI Time Tracker suggests time entries from activity; that feature is billed separately on token usage.

Starter adds attendance, a time-off calendar, overtime tracking, invoicing, Excel export, unlimited tasks, bulk edit, adding time for others and project templates. Premium adds a resource planner, billable time, budgets and estimates with alerts, app and website tracking, private time, management roles, scheduled email reports, time rounding and one integration. Ultimate adds data export, custom fields, remote work detection, timesheet approvals, billing rates, expenses, pivot table reports, unusual activity detection, screenshots, labour costs, fixed-fee projects, SSO and unlimited integrations.

Enterprise is quoted on request and adds custom activity categories, self-hosted or private cloud hosting, custom integrations, directory sync and BigQuery and Power BI connections.

Potential strengths

  • Free plan covers timesheets, unlimited users and projects, web, desktop and mobile apps and two-factor authentication
  • Ultimate adds timesheet approvals, expenses, labour costs, fixed-fee projects, screenshots and SSO

Everhour

smbeverhour.com ↗
Consider forCreative and marketing agencies, consultancies, software teams and legal and professional services firms that manage work in project management tools and need budgets and client billing, as Everhour's site describes
Pricing notesFree $0 for up to 5 seats with limited features and no integrations. Team $8.50 per seat per month billed yearly, with all features and a minimum of 5 seats; the monthly rate is not shown, and yearly payment saves 15% without refunds for unused months. Custom pricing with volume discounts for 50 seats or more. 14-day trial of all features without a card. Charged in USD by card (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateEmbeds its timer and estimates directly in Asana, ClickUp, Basecamp, Jira, monday.com, GitHub, Trello and Linear

Everhour is time tracking software built to run inside project management tools. Its site lists Asana, ClickUp, Basecamp, Jira, monday.com, GitHub, Trello, Linear and Notion among more than 40 integrations, and the integration places a timer and estimate fields directly on tasks in those tools, so people track time without switching to a separate app.

Beyond the timer, Everhour covers project budgets with alerts when a budget is at risk, estimate-versus-actual and profitability reports, hourly rates and invoicing from tracked time, expenses, time off, workload scheduling and shift scheduling. Its site emphasises that time data is stored in Everhour rather than in custom fields of the project tool, so history stays intact if the team switches tools or removes users.

The pricing model is deliberately simple. A free plan covers basic time tracking, projects, tasks, reports and export for up to five seats, without integrations. The single paid Team plan includes every feature, with unlimited seats subject to a five-seat minimum, and a Custom tier adds volume discounts, a dedicated manager and priority support for 50 seats or more.

Potential strengths

  • One paid plan includes every feature, including budgets, invoicing, expenses, scheduling and SSO
  • Native integrations with more than 40 tools, plus full API access

Trade-offs

  • Teams of two or three are still billed for the five-seat minimum
  • Integrations are not available on the free plan

Timely

smbtimely.com ↗
Consider forConsultancies, agencies and SaaS businesses that bill or account for client time and want timesheets completed automatically rather than through manual timers, as Timely's site describes
Pricing notesStarter $9 per user per month billed yearly or $11 monthly, up to 5 users and 20 projects. Premium $16 yearly or $20 monthly, up to 50 users with unlimited projects. Unlimited $22 yearly or $28 monthly, with unlimited users and projects. Enterprise through sales. The Tasks add-on is listed from $5 per person. Prices in USD; 14-day free trial (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateAutomatic capture of work across apps and websites, with AI allocation to projects and one-click approval of the resulting timesheet

Timely is automatic time tracking software for consultancies, agencies and SaaS businesses, now operating from the timely.com domain. Its site states that it is used by more than 5,000 businesses and positions the product around three steps: capturing work automatically, allocating it to the right project with AI, and approving the timesheet in one click.

Rather than asking people to start and stop timers, Timely records time spent in apps and websites in the background and drafts time entries from it, which people review and approve rather than build from memory. The site describes this as privacy-first and lists SSO, permissions and ISO 27001 compliance for IT teams.

Starter includes automatic tracking, AI categorisation, project health monitoring, billable hour reporting and API access for up to five users. Premium adds project management tool sync, accounting integrations, team management, budget and cost tracking and team planning for up to 50 users. Unlimited removes the user cap and adds capacity management and reporting, overtime and undertime tracking, Azure user management, more than 50 currencies and premium customer success.

Potential strengths

  • Automatic time tracking and AI categorisation are included from Starter
  • Unlimited adds capacity management, overtime and undertime reporting, Azure user management and more than 50 currencies

Trade-offs

  • Starter is capped at 5 users and 20 projects
  • No free plan; the lowest price is $9 per user per month on yearly billing

Memtime

specialistmemtime.com ↗
Consider forFreelancers, agencies and teams that bill by the hour and want automatic time capture without sending activity data to the cloud, with Connect for teams that log time into project software, as Memtime's site describes
Pricing notesQuarterly: Basic $18, Connect $26 and Premium $35 per user per month. Annual: Basic $14, Connect $21, Premium $29. Two-yearly: Basic $12, Connect $18, Premium $23. Enterprise is custom-priced for teams of 50 or more seats. Prices are also shown in euros, pounds and other currencies; free trial without a card (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateRecords time in programs automatically but stores the activity on the device only, so the raw record is never shared

Memtime is an automatic time tracker built around privacy. It runs in the background on the computer, records time spent in programs, and displays the day as a timeline so the user can recall what they worked on. The company states that activity data is stored offline on the device only, and that it is the only automatic tracker to guarantee this.

The working model is a two-step one. Memtime remembers the day automatically, and the user then assigns blocks of time to projects and tasks, which the site says takes seconds. Logged entries can be exported to the team's project or accounting software, which keeps the shared record limited to what each person chooses to submit.

The plans are organised by where the logged time needs to go. Basic suits freelancers and small teams that do not use project software, and includes automatic and offline tracking, calendar integrations, unlimited custom reports and built-in project management. Connect adds more than 100 integrations and sync with project software. Premium adds integrations with phone systems for call tracking, SSO with Entra ID, SAML and SCIM, premium integrations and priority support. Enterprise is offered to teams of 50 seats or more with a team trial, onboarding and custom integrations.

Potential strengths

  • Automatic and offline tracking, calendar integrations and unlimited custom reports from the Basic plan
  • Connect syncs with more than 100 project and accounting tools, and Premium adds phone system integrations and SSO

Trade-offs

  • No monthly billing; the shortest term is quarterly
  • No free plan, and Basic does not connect to project software

ClickTime

mid-marketclicktime.com ↗
Consider forOrganisations with technical teams that need labour costs and CapEx or R&D classification, professional services firms billing clients, and nonprofits tracking grant-restricted time, as ClickTime's site describes
Pricing notesStarter from $12 per user per month. Team, Premier and Enterprise prices are not published and require a demo request; ClickTime AI is included from Team. Expense tracking for receipts, mileage and approvals is $4 per user per month. Monthly and yearly payment are offered, and nonprofit discounts are mentioned (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCategorises time at entry as billable, capital or R&D work and routes it through approvals for finance reporting

ClickTime is time tracking software aimed at finance and operations teams in mid-market and enterprise organisations. Its pricing page describes four plans and custom pricing for organisations with more than 1,000 employees, and its site addresses three audiences: organisations with technical teams, professional services firms and nonprofits.

The product's focus is clean labour data. Instead of only logging hours, ClickTime classifies time at entry into categories such as billable, capital expenditure or research and development, and runs it through approval workflows so finance receives data that does not need re-categorising. Work activity from Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, calendars, Jira, GitHub and Zoom can flow in automatically, and ClickTime AI suggests the matching project and cost code for the employee to confirm.

Starter covers web and mobile timesheets, more than 70 reports and email reminders. Team adds automated tracking with AI mapping, approvals, cost rates, work types and time off. Premier adds project budgeting, resource management and custom reports and dashboards. Enterprise adds custom integrations with the organisation's ERP, advanced security and dedicated onboarding.

Potential strengths

  • Captures work from Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, calendars, Jira, GitHub and Zoom without screenshots or keystroke logging
  • Premier adds project budgeting, resource management and custom reports and dashboards

Trade-offs

  • Only the Starter price is published; other plans require a demo
  • Built for finance-led tracking, which may be more structure than a small team needs

How to choose a vendor

Compare the per-seat price at the billing term the team will actually use

Every product on this page charges per user or per seat, but the headline figure is usually the annual rate. Toggl Track lists $9 per user annually against $12 monthly on Starter, Clockify $5.49 against $6.99 on Standard, and TimeCamp $3.99 against $5.49 on Starter. Memtime sells quarterly, annual and two-year terms with different rates for each. Everhour charges a minimum of five seats on its Team plan. Model the cost at the real headcount and billing term.

Decide whether the team wants timers, automatic capture or monitoring

The products differ on how time is recorded. Toggl Track, Clockify, Harvest, TimeCamp and Everhour centre on timers and timesheets, with optional background tracking in some. Timely and Memtime record activity automatically and keep it private to the individual until it is logged. Hubstaff adds activity levels and screenshots that managers can see. These are different working cultures, and the choice should be agreed with the people who will be tracked.

Check where the time data needs to go next

Time data usually feeds invoices, payroll or project budgets. Harvest and Everhour build invoicing from tracked time; Clockify lists a QuickBooks integration from Standard; Hubstaff pays teams from tracked hours; ClickTime maps hours to projects and cost codes for finance. Ask each vendor to demonstrate the export or integration the business will rely on before signing.

Frequently asked questions

What is time tracking software?

Time tracking software records how many hours people spend on clients, projects and tasks. Depending on the product, time is captured with a timer, a weekly timesheet, a clock-in kiosk or automatic background capture. The recorded hours then feed reports, client invoices, project budgets, payroll and approval workflows, which is why the category is used by agencies, consultancies, law and accounting firms, remote teams and finance departments.

Which time tracking software has a free plan?

Five products on this page list a free plan. TimeCamp's free plan allows unlimited users and projects. Clockify's free plan covers up to 5 users, and Everhour's covers up to 5 seats without integrations. Harvest's free plan is limited to 1 seat and 2 projects, and Toggl Track offers a free plan for a limited number of users. Hubstaff's pricing page data also lists a Free plan with limited features.

How much does time tracking software cost?

On annual billing, paid entry tiers on this page run from about $4 to $14 per user per month: TimeCamp from $3.99, Clockify from $3.99, Hubstaff from $4.99, Everhour $8.50, Toggl Track and Harvest from $9, Timely $9, ClickTime from $12 and Memtime $14 on an annual term. Monthly billing costs more for every vendor that offers it. Upper tiers reach $25 per seat for Hubstaff Enterprise.

What is the difference between manual and automatic time tracking?

Manual tracking relies on people starting a timer or filling in a timesheet, which is simple but depends on memory and discipline. Automatic tracking records activity in apps, websites and documents in the background and helps each person turn it into time entries. Timely and Memtime are built around automatic capture; Toggl Track, Clockify and TimeCamp offer optional background tracking alongside timers.

Is time tracking software the same as employee monitoring software?

Not always. Most products on this page record time that people log or approve themselves. Some add monitoring features: Hubstaff lists activity levels, screenshots and app and URL tracking, Clockify Pro adds activity monitoring and GPS, and TimeCamp Ultimate adds screenshots. Timely and Memtime state that automatically captured activity stays private to the individual. Buyers should check local employment and privacy rules before enabling monitoring.

Which time tracking tools handle client invoicing?

Harvest builds invoices from tracked time and expenses and accepts online payment through Stripe. Clockify includes invoicing and recurring invoices from its Standard plan, TimeCamp from Starter and Everhour on its Team plan. Hubstaff turns tracked hours into client invoices and team payments. Toggl Track focuses on billable rates and profitability reporting rather than issuing invoices itself.

Which tools track time inside project management software?

Everhour embeds its timer in Asana, ClickUp, Basecamp, Jira, monday.com, GitHub, Trello and Linear. Toggl Track lists more than 100 integrations, with Jira and Asana integrations on Premium. Memtime's Connect plan syncs logged time to more than 100 project tools. Hubstaff, Timely and ClickTime also connect to common project and work tools.
