These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.
Session replay tools show what users actually did in a website or app. They record clicks, scrolls, taps, form inputs and errors and play the session back like a video, which helps teams see why a user abandoned a checkout, hit a bug or ignored a feature. Most products now add AI summaries so that teams do not have to watch every recording.
The ten products compared here differ mainly in who they serve. Contentsquare, which now includes Hotjar, Fullstory, Microsoft Clarity, Mouseflow and Lucky Orange pair replay with heatmaps, funnels and surveys for marketing and UX work. PostHog, Sentry, Datadog and OpenReplay pair replay with logs, errors and performance data for engineers. UXCam focuses on mobile apps.

Vendor details and trade-offs
Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare. Contentsquare states that the two platforms have merged, that anyone looking to try Hotjar signs up to Contentsquare, and that hotjar.com pricing redirects to the Contentsquare plan page. The Hotjar tools people knew, heatmaps, recordings and surveys, continue inside the combined product.
Session replay sits within a broader experience analytics platform. The free plan adds attention maps, error and performance monitoring, funnels, up to 100 survey responses a month and more than ten integrations, including Slack, Jira and Unbounce. Sense AI produces summaries of heatmaps and recordings, Sense Chat answers questions about the data in plain language, and LLM Connect exposes Contentsquare data to ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot through MCP.
Paid Growth plans are priced by monthly sessions, with a separate replay allowance. Larger organisations move to Pro and Enterprise, which begin at 1 million monthly sessions and are quoted. Product analytics and voice-of-customer modules are sold under separate plans.

Fullstory sells behavioural data products for analytics, workforce and data activation. Its Analytics plans include session replay, heatmaps, scroll and click maps, live session viewing, developer tools and tabbed browsing, so a replay follows a user across several open tabs.
Capture is tagless: Fullstory records interactions automatically instead of requiring events to be defined in advance, which the vendor presents as a way to avoid gaps in the data. Private and sensitive data is excluded by default, and configurable form privacy, sensitive data detection and restrictions by IP, location and user agent are listed in the plan comparison. StoryAI adds AI agents and one-click session summaries.
The plan table also lists retention analysis, journeys, metric insights and data management features, and Fullstory positions Advanced for trend discovery at scale and Enterprise for data science teams. Fullstory Anywhere sends behavioural data to a warehouse or activates it for personalisation, and a separate Workforce product applies session replay to employees' internal tools.
Potential strengths
- Session replay, heatmaps, live session viewing and developer tools are listed in the plan comparison
- Behavioural data can be exported to a data warehouse or cloud storage
Trade-offs
- No published price for any plan
- Mobile capture and StoryAI are add-ons rather than included

Microsoft Clarity is a free behaviour analytics tool. Its FAQ states that it is free forever, with no traffic limits, no limit on sites per account and no sampling, and Microsoft says it runs on more than two million sites and apps.
Session recordings show clicks, scrolls and page rendering, with Highlights marking key moments in a journey. Heatmaps show where users click, scroll and drop off, and can be compared across page versions. AI summaries condense recordings and heatmaps into takeaways, and a chat interface answers questions about the data. Clarity also reports how AI assistants cite and crawl a site, and offers Brand agents, an on-site shopping assistant.
A lightweight SDK covers Android, iOS, Flutter and React Native apps. An MCP server and a live browser extension extend Clarity to other tools. The capture script is open source, masking of user data is configurable, and data is held in Azure. Clarity must not be used on sites aimed at users under 18.
Potential strengths
- Free with no traffic limit and no sampling of sessions
- Mobile SDKs for Android, iOS, Flutter and React Native
Trade-offs
- Must not be used on sites or apps targeting users under 18
- Data is stored in Microsoft Azure with no self-hosting option documented

PostHog is a product platform with more than ten tools, including analytics, feature flags, experiments, surveys, error tracking and a data warehouse. Session Replay records clicks, scrolls, form inputs, page views, network requests and console logs and plays them back like video.
The replay player includes an event timeline listing autocaptured events, custom events, form interactions and errors. Each row opens event properties, exception details with stack traces and request headers, or web vitals such as LCP and INP. Filters narrow recordings by event, user property, time range and behaviour such as rage clicks.
PostHog AI finds, watches and summarises recordings, and the PostHog MCP brings the same capability into Cursor, Claude Code, VS Code and other agents. PostHog says more than 90 per cent of companies stay on its free tier. Adding a card keeps the same monthly free volume and raises the project limit, retention and support level.
Potential strengths
- Free tier covers 5,000 recordings a month with unlimited team members
- Per-product billing limits prevent unexpected bills
Trade-offs
- Usage pricing needs volume estimates across several products
- Free plan is limited to one project and one-year data retention
- Product reference
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Usage-based per recording, billed monthly after the free tier
- Source review: checked Sep 25, 2026

Sentry is an application monitoring platform built around error monitoring and tracing. Session Replay adds a video-like reproduction of what the user did before and after an issue, so developers can see the steps that led to an error rather than rely on a bug report.
Replay is generally available for web and mobile. On the web it covers static sites, single-page applications and server-side rendered frameworks, including Electron, Next.js and Remix. Mobile replay supports Android, iOS and React Native. A Replays page lists sessions with filters, a details page shows the replay with its surrounding data, and organisations can restrict replay access to specific users on top of role and team permissions.
Pricing combines a base plan with volume. Each paid plan includes 50 replays, 50,000 errors and 5 million spans, and more replays are bought in advance at a discount or through a shared pay-as-you-go budget. Data above both limits is dropped rather than billed.
Potential strengths
- Covers browser apps, Electron, Next.js and Remix plus Android, iOS and React Native
- Replay access can be restricted to named users
Trade-offs
- Only 50 replays a month are included before paid volume
- Aimed at debugging rather than marketing or conversion analysis
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Base plan per month, billed monthly or annually, plus reserved or pay-as-you-go replay volume

Datadog is an observability platform covering infrastructure, APM, logs, security and digital experience. Session Replay is part of its digital experience products and is sold as an add-on to Real User Monitoring or Product Analytics.
Browser Session Replay captures and replays the web experience alongside RUM performance data, which helps teams reproduce errors and study usage patterns. The RUM Browser SDK is open source and uses the rrweb project. Mobile Session Replay replays taps, swipes and scrolls in native Android and iOS apps, which helps reproduce crashes.
AI-powered summaries describe the user's intent, key actions, friction signals and outcome, with links that jump to the matching moment. Smart chapters split the timeline into labelled stages, such as browsing and checkout. Datadog prices replay per 1,000 sessions with a lower annual rate than month-to-month or on-demand billing, and states that multi-year and volume discounts are available.
Potential strengths
- Replay is connected to RUM, product analytics and the wider Datadog platform
- Browser SDK is open source and built on rrweb
Trade-offs
- Replay must be bought on top of RUM or Product Analytics
- AI summaries are not supported on Datadog's government sites
- Product reference
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Per 1,000 sessions per month, billed annually, month-to-month or on-demand

Mouseflow is a behaviour analytics tool built around session replay, heatmaps, journey analytics and friction detection. Replays recreate individual sessions, and teams can star, tag, comment on, share and download recordings.
Heatmaps cover clicks, scrolls, geography, attention, movement and friction, and can be compared side by side. Friction detection flags friction events and JavaScript errors automatically, ranks affected pages and elements, sends notifications and can trigger feedback surveys when friction occurs. Form analytics show where users abandon or fail to submit forms, and conversion funnels link to replays of dropped and converted users.
Plans are sized by monthly sessions, website projects, funnels and retention, which runs from 1 month on free to 12 months on Premium. The plan comparison also lists data export, an open REST API, an MCP connection for LLMs, journey analytics, SSO and Mina AI.
Potential strengths
- Unlimited users on every plan, including free
- Annual billing saves up to 35 per cent
Trade-offs
- Essential allows one website project and one funnel
- Data retention is 1 month on free and 3 months on Essential
- Product reference
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Per month by session tier, billed monthly or annually

Lucky Orange is a conversion optimisation tool for websites and online stores. It states that more than 500,000 websites use it.
Session recordings show how visitors move through pages, and dynamic heatmaps show clicks and scroll depth on live pages. Conversion funnels, page analytics and form analytics show where visitors drop out. Unlike most replay tools, Lucky Orange also includes live chat, a live visitor view of people on the site now, and unlimited surveys and announcements, so a team can act on what recordings reveal.
Plans differ by monthly sessions rather than features. Data storage starts at 60 days, with 90, 180 or 365 days available as upgrades, and extra websites cost $5 each. Discovery AI is also listed on the pricing page. Annual billing is about 20 per cent lower than monthly.
Potential strengths
- All features are available on all plan levels
- Unlimited team members and unlimited surveys and announcements
Trade-offs
- No free plan beyond the 7-day trial
- Base storage starts at 60 days, with longer retention sold as an upgrade
- Product reference

OpenReplay is an open-source session replay and product analytics platform that can be self-hosted. It presents self-hosting as a way to keep complete control of customer data, with no third-party processors and shorter compliance reviews.
Replays include errors, network activity, performance metrics and AI summaries, with built-in developer tools for reproducing bugs as if they happened in the engineer's own browser. Product analytics add funnels, user journeys, trends, heatmaps and web analytics. Co-browsing lets support teams join a live session, take remote control, annotate and start a video call without a meeting link. Spot handles bug reports, and an MCP server appears in the plan comparison.
Three deployment models are offered. The open-source edition runs on-premises on any cloud. Dedicated is a managed virtual machine in a separate VPC across 50 regions on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure, or in the buyer's own cloud. Enterprise adds SAML, SCIM, audit logging, dedicated support and volume pricing.
Potential strengths
- Dedicated instances have no limits on users, recordings or retention
- Data residency across 50 regions on Dedicated
Trade-offs
- Self-hosted open source leaves scaling, storage and retention to the buyer
- SAML, SCIM and audit logging are described for Enterprise on a multi-year contract
- Product reference
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Hourly for Dedicated; Enterprise on multi-year contract; open source free

UXCam is a product analytics platform with an integrated AI analyst, for mobile apps and websites. It states that it serves companies in more than 50 countries and processes more than 100 billion data points a month.
Session replay shows where users tap, zoom or drop off, and heatmaps, dashboards, funnels and retention tables sit alongside it. For apps, UXCam tracks frustration signals, unresponsive gestures, crashes, UI freezes and exceptions, and log capture and stack trace analysis are listed. The SDK records video on a background thread and uploads when the app moves to the background, and sensitive fields are blocked automatically.
Tara AI is the analyst layer. A lite version is included on Starter, and Tara AI Pro adds 1,000 or more monthly credits so the analyst can review more sessions. Plans are sized by monthly sessions, projects and user licences, and SOC 2, SAML single sign-on and regional data hosting are documented.

Frequently asked questions
What is a session replay tool?
It is software that records how a user interacts with a website or app, including clicks, scrolls, taps, form inputs and page changes, and plays the session back like a video. Most tools pair replay with heatmaps, funnels or error data so teams can find where users struggle, reproduce bugs and understand why a conversion or support issue happened.
How much do session replay tools cost?
Microsoft Clarity is free. Contentsquare, PostHog and Mouseflow have free plans with 200,000 sessions, 5,000 recordings and 500 sessions a month respectively. Entry paid plans include Mouseflow Essential at €25 a month annually, Sentry Team at $26, Lucky Orange Build at $32 and Contentsquare Growth at $49. OpenReplay Dedicated starts at $199 a month. Fullstory and UXCam quote paid plans.
Is Hotjar still available?
Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare. Contentsquare states that the two platforms have merged and that Hotjar's heatmaps, recordings and surveys continue in the Contentsquare product, where new users sign up. The Contentsquare free plan captures 200,000 sessions a month, compared with 35 a day on Hotjar's former free plan, and the Hotjar pricing page redirects to Contentsquare's.
Which session replay tools suit developers?
Sentry, Datadog, PostHog and OpenReplay attach replays to technical data. Sentry links replays to errors and traces, Datadog to RUM performance data and backend observability, PostHog to console logs, network requests and exceptions, and OpenReplay to built-in developer tools. These suit debugging production issues that cannot be reproduced locally.
Which tools record mobile apps?
UXCam focuses on mobile apps as well as websites. Sentry supports Android, iOS and React Native, Datadog native Android and iOS, and PostHog prices mobile recordings separately. Microsoft Clarity has SDKs for Android, iOS, Flutter and React Native, and Fullstory sells mobile capture as an add-on.
Can session replay data be self-hosted?
OpenReplay's open-source edition is designed to be self-hosted, and its Enterprise tier runs on-premises at scale. OpenReplay Dedicated can also run in the buyer's own cloud. The other tools in this comparison are hosted by the vendor, although several offer regional data hosting or residency options on higher tiers.
What privacy controls should buyers check?
Buyers should check default masking of form fields and text, controls to exclude pages or elements, consent handling, data retention, residency and access permissions. Fullstory excludes sensitive data by default, Sentry can restrict replay access to named users, UXCam blocks sensitive fields on the device, and Clarity must not be used on sites aimed at users under 18.
How was this list put together?
