Best Sales Tax Software for Shopify (2026): Top 9 Compared
Every product below either is Shopify's own tax service or is listed in the Shopify App Store with a Shopify integration documented by the vendor. They split into three groups. Shopify Tax calculates and collects tax at checkout, but its automated filing service is closed to new enrollment, so a new store still needs a way to register, file and remit. Kintsugi, Numeral, BreezyFile, Sidr Tax and TaxRex read Shopify order data and handle registration and filing, each priced per return and per state registration, with TaxRex adding a small monthly plan. TaxCloud and AccurateTax sell order-volume subscriptions and offer free filing in Streamlined Sales Tax member states as Certified Service Providers. Zamp sells a fully managed service by quote. Eight of the nine publish price figures.

Sales tax software for Shopify covers the work Shopify leaves to the merchant. Shopify Tax calculates and collects tax at checkout, but deciding where the store must register, filing returns and remitting payments remain the merchant’s responsibility, and Shopify’s own automated filing service is closed to new enrollment. Most products built for Shopify stores therefore connect to the store, read the orders and the tax already collected, and take over registration and filing state by state.
This page is a separate list from the main sales tax software comparison, which covers Avalara, Vertex, Anrok, Stripe Tax, TaxJar and other platforms for every kind of seller. Vendors here were selected on documented Shopify fit: Shopify’s own tax service, a Shopify App Store listing, or a vendor page describing the Shopify integration. Every claim below comes from those pages, checked on 11 October 2026.
How a Shopify merchant should shortlist
Three documented differences separate the nine products. The first is role: Shopify Tax calculates, Zamp, Numeral and Kintsugi manage filing as a service, and BreezyFile, Sidr Tax and TaxRex are filing apps run from Shopify order data. The second is pricing basis: per return and per registration, a monthly plan by order volume, or a quote. The third is Streamlined Sales Tax coverage, where TaxCloud and AccurateTax file at no charge in member states. Entries appear with dated source checks first; the order is not a ranking.
Vendor details and trade-offs
Shopify Tax is Shopify's native tax service for stores in the United States, Canada, the European Union and the United Kingdom. Shopify's comparison of tax services lists automatic rate calculation from the store's tax registrations and product categories, recommended product categories, rooftop accuracy, support for state fees, tax holidays, advanced tax reports, tax liability insights, and customer and B2B exemptions. In the EU and UK it also generates VAT invoices.
Pricing changed for stores created on or after 13 May 2026. For those stores the $100,000 free threshold is measured across lifetime sales rather than each calendar year. After the threshold, the fee is a percentage of each order where tax is collected, capped at $0.99 per order, and stores with more than $25 million in annual sales are directed to their Customer Success Manager.
The material limit for a growing store is filing. Shopify's help center states that automated filing is closed to new enrollment and applies only to stores already enrolled, which pay $75 per generated return, or $50 on Plus. Shopify Tax decides what to collect; a store that is not enrolled must still register, file and remit through another provider or by hand.
Potential strengths
- No app to install, because the service runs inside the Shopify admin and checkout
- Free until the store passes $100,000 in sales
- Tax liability insights show where a store may need to register
Trade-offs
- Automated filing is closed to new enrollment, so new stores need a separate filing provider
- Covers orders placed through Shopify only, not marketplace or wholesale channels outside the store
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Per-order fee charged through the Shopify bill
- Source review: checked Oct 11, 2026
- Vendor confirmation: not confirmed
Kintsugi publishes a dedicated Shopify integration page that sets out the division of labour. Shopify calculates and collects tax at checkout; Kintsugi reads orders, products, customers, refunds, POS locations and shop information, classifies products for taxability, tracks economic nexus, and registers, files and remits returns. The page also notes that Shopify's automated filing is closed to new enrollment and excludes imported orders, marketplace sales and amended returns.
The Free plan covers global exposure monitoring, historical liability auditing, automated risk assessment, threshold alerts, AI product categorization, address validation and an in-app assistant. Starter, at $75 per filing or registration, adds automated registration, filing and remittance, deregistration, refunds and amendments, basic exemption certificate management, a virtual mailbox for state notices and onboarding assistance. Premium, priced by quote, adds multi-country compliance, real-time calculation on invoices in ERPs, back filing with voluntary disclosure options, full certificate management, API access and SLA-backed support.
The Shopify App Store listing names Amazon, BigCommerce, QuickBooks, Stripe and WooCommerce among other connections, which matters for stores that also sell outside Shopify.
Potential strengths
- Free tier covers exposure monitoring, historical liability auditing and nexus alerts
- No per-transaction or per-state subscription fees
- Premium extends to Canada, the EU, the UK and more than 100 countries
Trade-offs
- Exemption certificate bulk upload and voluntary disclosure agreements sit in the custom-priced Premium plan
- Per-return pricing adds up for stores filing monthly in many states
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Per filing or registration; no long-term contract
- Source review: checked Oct 11, 2026
- Vendor confirmation: not confirmed
Numeral sells sales tax compliance as a service rather than a calculation engine. Its Shopify App Store listing is free to install and states the US prices directly: $75 per filing and $150 per registration, with custom pricing for global VAT and GST. The listing also names SST filing and local tax returns among its reporting and filing categories.
The base plan on Numeral's pricing page covers registrations, filing and remittance with autofile and autoregister, a virtual mailbox for tax mail, AI product classification, exemption certificate management, coverage of all US states and jurisdictions, and a concierge service staffed by sales tax specialists. Native integrations are listed with Shopify, Stripe, Amazon and QuickBooks among dozens of others.
The pricing FAQ states there are no setup or onboarding fees for standard US filings, no per-transaction overages, and no required contract. Adding a state costs the $150 registration plus $75 for each return that state requires. A merchant can connect the store and receive a free nexus study before committing, which helps a Shopify brand decide whether it has filing obligations at all.
Potential strengths
- Published per-return and per-registration prices with no setup fee
- Free nexus study after connecting sales channels
- Exemption certificate management and AI product classification included in the base plan
Trade-offs
- Per-return pricing becomes expensive for stores filing monthly in many states
- International VAT and GST coverage is quoted separately
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Billed as filings occur; month-to-month
- Source review: checked Oct 11, 2026
- Vendor confirmation: not confirmed
BreezyFile describes itself as built just for Shopify merchants, and its App Store listing carries the Built for Shopify badge, which Shopify awards to apps meeting its performance, design and integration standards. The listing states that the app works with Shopify Tax: Shopify calculates and collects at checkout, and BreezyFile uses the store's order data to prepare and file returns on time in each US state where the merchant operates.
Features listed are automated filings paid by the due date, state registrations submitted once and then enrolled for future filing, an admin dashboard showing filing history and upcoming returns, and data sync from Shopify orders. The listing's categories include liability calculation, threshold tracking, multi-state filing, SST filing and local tax returns. Support is described as US-based.
Pricing is two figures: $75 per filing and $150 per registration, with the app itself free to install. The listing names Shopify Admin as its only connection. That fits a merchant whose revenue passes entirely through Shopify; a brand also selling on Amazon, at wholesale or through a separate storefront would need to confirm how those sales are reported.
Potential strengths
- Carries Shopify's Built for Shopify badge on its App Store listing
- Filing history and upcoming returns appear in the Shopify admin
- Supports one store or multiple stores
Trade-offs
- Works with Shopify Admin only, so non-Shopify channels need another tool
- Covers US sales tax only, with no VAT or GST service listed
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Per filing and per registration
- Source review: checked Oct 11, 2026
- Vendor confirmation: not confirmed
Sidr Tax describes itself as a fully managed US sales tax solution for ecommerce, and its website's main call to action is to install the Shopify app. Its help center explains that autofile uses sales tax reports generated from Shopify transactions and that merchants enroll each state separately. Reports are built from the tax actually collected.
The Free plan covers nexus monitoring across all states, reporting, CSV imports, historical liability analysis, risk assessment, address validation and live chat. Plus adds automated filing and remittance, registration and deregistration, a virtual mailbox for state notices, rooftop-accurate calculations, automatic tax code classification, backfiling and amendments, and notice management. The pricing page lists Colorado home rule filings as included.
The pricing page states that Sidr Tax has removed monthly subscription fees and charges $60 per filing and $150 per state registration. The App Store listing still labels Plus with a $60 monthly figure alongside the same per-filing price, so a merchant should confirm the billing basis before enrolling. The help center adds that state autofile validation can take up to two weeks.
Potential strengths
- Lowest flat per-return price among the managed filers here that charge no monthly fee
- Free plan includes nexus monitoring across all states and live chat
- Plus includes notice management, backfiling and amendments
Trade-offs
- The App Store listing labels Plus as $60 per month while the pricing page states there is no monthly fee, so buyers should confirm the billing basis
- US sales tax only
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Per filing and per registration; no annual contract
- Source review: checked Oct 11, 2026
- Vendor confirmation: not confirmed
TaxRex is a Shopify app whose website is titled Shopify sales tax automation and filing, and installation runs through the Shopify App Store, where store data syncs automatically. Every plan includes nexus tracking and filing-ready reports; filing and registration are optional services billed when used.
The four monthly plans are set by order volume. Startup costs $10 for up to 200 orders a month with additional orders at $0.05 each and includes state nexus sales reports and an economic nexus analysis report. The $20 plan covers 500 orders and adds multi-store support. The $30 plan covers 1,500 orders and lists an economic nexus analysis dashboard. The $100 plan covers 10,000 orders at $0.01 per extra order.
Autofile costs $25 per return per state and state registration $99 per state on every plan. The free trial lasts 15 days and covers the app and reports; the website states that optional services such as filing and registration are charged immediately. A low-volume store filing in a handful of states will find this one of the cheaper published structures, but should check support levels before relying on it.
Potential strengths
- Published monthly plans start at $10
- Per-return filing fee is the lowest published figure among the vendors here
- Multi-store support from the $20 plan
Trade-offs
- Combines a monthly subscription with per-return and overage fees, so total cost needs modelling
- Support is listed as email only on every plan
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Billed every 30 days through Shopify, plus per-return and per-registration fees
- Source review: checked Oct 11, 2026
- Vendor confirmation: not confirmed
TaxCloud is a Streamlined Sales Tax Certified Service Provider and lists a Shopify app in the App Store that is free to install, with nationwide registration and returns filing, SST access, US-based support and 100 orders included. Charges are billed by TaxCloud rather than on the Shopify invoice.
The pricing page sells a subscription chosen by sales platform and order volume, plus a filing tier chosen by the number of returns. Starter includes return-ready reports for all states, SST access, nexus monitoring across all 50 states and email support. Premium adds real-time calculation, ERP integrations, API access and phone support. In the plan comparison Shopify appears as a data import integration, so Shopify Tax continues to calculate at checkout. Returns filing and remittance start at $39 per month, filing plans are described as low as $20 per filing, and audit support starts at $99 per month.
The SST benefit is the main reason a Shopify merchant would consider TaxCloud. The page describes free registration, calculation, filing, remittance, audit support and notice management in 24 SST states. Additional services include state registration, a virtual mailbox and voluntary disclosure support.
Potential strengths
- Free sales tax services in 24 Streamlined Sales Tax states
- Return-ready reports and nexus monitoring across all 50 states in every plan
- US-based customer support named on the Shopify listing
Trade-offs
- Shopify connects as a data import on Starter rather than real-time calculation
- Subscription tier prices did not render in the fetched pricing page text
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Monthly or yearly subscription; billed by TaxCloud separately from the Shopify invoice
- Source review: checked Oct 11, 2026
- Vendor confirmation: not confirmed
AccurateTax is an ecommerce sales tax provider and an SST Certified Service Provider. Its Shopify app, launched in 2024, downloads order information from the store for reporting and offers optional SST integration. The listing describes two ways to use it: complete returns from the app's reports, or have AccurateTax handle filing and remittance as a concierge service. It also lists geolocation of each order to pinpoint the correct jurisdiction.
The free plan covers only filing under the SST CSP contract; other states are excluded. Three Enterprise plans at $50, $90 and $160 per month import 125, 250 or 500 non-SST transactions, and registration or filing in non-SST states costs extra.
The website adds that the company works only on ecommerce sales tax, that rates account for sourcing rules, addresses and product taxability, and that its services extend to exemption certificate management. It charges no setup fee and requires no long-term contract. For a Shopify merchant whose obligations sit largely in SST states, the free plan may cover much of the filing work; a store with significant non-SST exposure should request the per-state filing price.
Potential strengths
- Free plan for SST-state filing under the CSP contract
- Reports can be used to self-file, or filing can be handed over as a service
- Website states there is no setup fee and no long-term contract
Trade-offs
- The free plan excludes non-SST states
- Filing in non-SST states is priced separately and not published on the listing
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Billed every 30 days through Shopify; no long-term contract

Zamp positions itself as a fully managed sales tax service and publishes a Shopify integration page. It states that Shopify calculates and collects tax according to the store's settings, while filing and remittance need a separate workflow; Zamp connects to the store, backfills prior orders, refunds and adjustments for nexus analysis, and prepares returns from what was actually collected.
Zamp also lists a free Shopify app, Zamp Sales Tax Dashboard, which breaks down each order's tax by product category and jurisdiction, separates shipping tax and searches by order number. The app shows calculations only; filing comes from Zamp's paid service.
The free plan offers a one-time nexus assessment, historical liability estimate, product taxability review, a 30-minute consultation and an API sandbox. The U.S. plan adds rooftop-accurate calculation, nexus monitoring with alerts at 80% of a threshold, automated registrations, filing with direct ACH remittance and early-filing discount capture, daily portal monitoring, notice handling and specialists who include former state auditors. The U.S. + Canada plan adds Canadian coverage. Neither paid plan shows a price, so cost should be compared through a written quote.
Potential strengths
- Free Shopify dashboard breaks down tax by product category and jurisdiction for each order
- Managed plans include daily state portal monitoring and notice resolution
- U.S. + Canada plan adds GST, HST, PST and QST filing
Trade-offs
- No price figure published for paid plans
- The pricing page requires a work email to start
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Quote-based
- Source review: checked Oct 11, 2026
- Vendor confirmation: not confirmed
Frequently asked questions
What is sales tax software for Shopify?
It is software or a managed service that works with a Shopify store to calculate sales tax at checkout, track where the store has economic nexus, register with states and file and remit returns. On Shopify, calculation is usually handled by Shopify Tax, so most third-party products connect to the store, read the tax already collected, and take over registration and filing.
How is this page different from the main sales tax software comparison?
The main sales tax software comparison covers products for every kind of seller, including enterprise engines such as Avalara and Vertex and SaaS-focused tools such as Anrok and Stripe Tax. This page lists products selected because they are Shopify's own service or are documented as Shopify integrations, with an App Store listing or a vendor Shopify page. Four names appear on both pages; the other five are specific to this one.
Does Shopify file sales tax returns automatically?
Only for stores already enrolled. Shopify's help center states that automated filing with Shopify Tax is closed to new enrollment and cannot be turned on for a store that is not already enrolled. Enrolled stores pay $75 per generated return, or $50 on Plus. Other stores must file through a third-party provider, an accountant or the state's own portal.
How much does Shopify Tax cost?
Shopify Tax is free until a store reaches $100,000 in sales. For stores created on or after 13 May 2026 that threshold is lifetime rather than annual. After it, Shopify charges 0.35% of each US order where tax is collected on Basic, Grow and Advanced plans, or 0.25% on Plus, capped at $0.99 per order. EU, UK and Canadian orders cost 0.25%, or 0.15% on Plus.
What does it cost to have a Shopify app file sales tax?
Published per-return prices on this page are $25 for TaxRex, which also charges a monthly plan from $10, $60 for Sidr Tax, and $75 for Kintsugi, Numeral and BreezyFile. State registration costs $99 to $150 per state. TaxCloud prices filing from $39 per month, AccurateTax charges $50 to $160 per month for non-SST imports and files SST states free, and Zamp quotes its managed plans.
Is there free sales tax software for Shopify?
Several products have free tiers with limits. Shopify Tax is free until $100,000 in sales. Kintsugi, Sidr Tax and Zamp offer free nexus monitoring or assessment, but filing is paid. AccurateTax files free in SST states under its Certified Service Provider contract, and TaxCloud describes free services in 24 SST states. No product on this page files free in every state.
Do these apps handle Amazon and other channels as well as Shopify?
Coverage varies. Kintsugi lists Amazon, BigCommerce, QuickBooks, Stripe and WooCommerce on its App Store listing, Numeral names Amazon, Stripe and QuickBooks, and TaxCloud supports several carts and ERPs. BreezyFile lists Shopify Admin as its only connection, and TaxRex and Sidr Tax are built around Shopify transaction data. Merchants selling elsewhere should confirm that every channel is included in returns.
How was this comparison compiled?
Each vendor's Shopify App Store listing, Shopify integration page, pricing page and Shopify's own help center were read on 11 October 2026. Every price comes from the vendor's pricing page or App Store listing. No product was installed or used, and no vendor confirmed the details. Entries with dated source checks appear first; the order is content sequence, not a ranking.
