Best Retail POS Systems (2026): Top 10 Compared

Updated October 2026By StatWharf Editorial10 vendorsMethodology

A retail POS system rings up sales at the counter and also runs the store's back office: the product catalogue with sizes and colours, stock counts, purchase orders, transfers between locations, customer profiles and sales reports. The ten systems below fall into three groups. Shopify POS, Square for Retail and Lightspeed Retail are cloud platforms that pair the register with an online store and their own payment processing. Clover and Heartland Retail are sold with merchant processing from a payments company, and their total cost depends on that processing agreement. KORONA POS, Hike, Erply, POS Nation and Loyverse are POS specialists with published per-terminal, per-store or add-on pricing, several of them processor-agnostic.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

A retail POS system handles the checkout and the stockroom at once. Staff scan items, take card or cash payments and process returns at the counter, while the same system keeps the catalogue, stock levels, purchase orders, transfers between stores, customer profiles and sales reports up to date. Restaurant systems are not covered.

The comparison below covers ten systems. Features and pricing come from each vendor’s own product and pricing pages, checked on 8 October 2026. Nine entries publish at least one price figure: Lightspeed Retail, Shopify POS, Square for Retail, KORONA POS, Hike, Erply, POS Nation and Loyverse list plan or add-on prices, and Heartland Retail publishes the terms of a promotional offer. Clover’s bundle prices load in an online configurator and were not captured, so its profile records the billing terms its pricing page states.

How to choose a vendor

Count the units the price is charged on

Prices on this page use different units. Square for Retail charges per location, KORONA POS per terminal, Erply per store, Loyverse per store or per employee for add-ons, and Shopify POS combines an account plan with a POS Pro fee for each retail location. Lightspeed and Hike quote a base plan that includes one register. A store should count locations, registers and staff before comparing figures.

Check whether processing is tied to the POS

Clover and Heartland Retail require processing through their own payments business, and Heartland's published offer requires a three-year contract. Shopify, Square and Lightspeed sell their own processing alongside the software. KORONA POS describes every plan as processing agnostic, and Hike lists 0% transaction fees on all plans.

Match inventory depth to the catalogue

Purchase orders, vendor records, stock transfers, cycle counts and landed costs often sit on higher tiers or paid add-ons: Square's vendor and purchase order tools are on Plus, Shopify's inventory counts and purchase orders are part of POS Pro, KORONA's supplier ordering starts on its Retail plan, and Loyverse sells advanced inventory as a $25 add-on.

Frequently asked questions

What is a retail POS system?

A retail POS system is the software and hardware a store uses to ring up sales and manage the business behind the counter. Beyond taking payments, it holds the product catalogue with variants such as size and colour, tracks stock across locations, creates purchase orders, records customers and loyalty, and reports on sales and staff.

How much does a retail POS system cost?

Published software prices on this page range from free (Loyverse, Square Free) to $49 to $149 per location per month for Square's paid plans, $59 to $99 per terminal for KORONA POS, $89 to $289 per month for Lightspeed Retail, and $39 to $399 per month for Shopify plus $89 per POS Pro location. Card processing, hardware and add-ons come on top. Clover and Heartland Retail quote through sales.

Which retail POS systems let a store choose its own card processor?

KORONA POS describes every plan as processing agnostic. Hike lists card payments as integrated or non-integrated with 0% transaction fees, and Erply lists integrated payments through Shift4, Cayan, Adyen and Pax. Shopify allows third-party providers for an extra 0.6% to 2% fee. Clover hardware works only with Clover processing, and Heartland's offer requires Heartland processing.

Which systems handle size and colour variants well?

Heartland Retail's pricing page centres on apparel and reports down to size and colour. Lightspeed Retail manages products, variants and stock across channels, Clover tracks variant combinations such as medium, red, cotton, and Hike supports products with variants on every plan.

What retail POS works best for a store that also sells online?

Shopify POS shares one back office between the online store and retail locations, with buy online and pick up in store on POS Pro. Lightspeed Retail and Hike Plus include a built-in ecommerce store, and Square plans include an online site. Heartland Retail, Erply and Hike integrate with external platforms such as Shopify, BigCommerce and WooCommerce.

Are there contracts or cancellation terms to check?

Yes. Square's paid plans can be cancelled or switched at any time, KORONA states no forced contracts, and Hike allows plan switches with pro-rata credit. Clover's hardware subscriptions are non-cancelable and terms vary by reseller, and Heartland's no-subscription offer requires a three-year contract with a possible early termination fee.

What hardware does a retail POS need?

Most cloud systems run on an iPad, Android tablet or computer with a card reader, barcode scanner, receipt printer and cash drawer. Square hardware starts at $59, Shopify needs a phone or tablet and a Shopify card reader, and Clover sells bundles from a compact terminal to a Station Duo with a customer display.

How was this comparison compiled?

StatWharf Editorial selected ten retail POS systems with live product pages and read each vendor's own product and pricing pages on 8 October 2026. Prices are recorded as published, in US dollars, with billing units and conditions. No system was installed or tested, and the order of entries is not a ranking.
