Best Payroll Software for Accounting Firms (2026): Top 9 Compared

Updated October 2026By StatWharf Editorial9 vendorsMethodology

Every product below is documented by its vendor for accountants, CPA firms or bookkeepers who run payroll for several clients. The nine split by delivery model. QuickBooks Workforce, Patriot Software, SurePayroll and Wagepoint are cloud payroll services with a partner program: the firm gets a multi-client view and a discount or wholesale rate, and the vendor files taxes. Payroll Relief and Accounting CS Payroll are firm-licensed processing engines built for batch payroll across many clients, both priced by quote. CheckMark Online Payroll, Drake Accounting and ezPaycheck put the firm in charge of filing, and charge either a low per-company monthly fee or a flat annual license for unlimited clients. Wagepoint is the only Canadian payroll product on the page. Seven of the nine publish price figures.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

Payroll software for accounting firms handles the same calculations as any payroll product, but the buyer is the firm rather than the employer. A CPA or bookkeeping practice running payroll for ten or a hundred clients needs one login across all of them, pricing that leaves room for a margin, and a clear answer on who files taxes, who bills the client and whose brand the client sees.

This page is a separate list from the main payroll software comparison, which covers Gusto, Rippling, RUN Powered by ADP, Paychex Flex, Deel and other employer-facing platforms. Vendors here were selected on documented firm fit: an accountant edition, partner or reseller program, or firm license that names accountants, CPAs or bookkeepers as the buyer. Every claim below comes from the vendor’s own pages, checked on 11 October 2026.

How a firm should shortlist

Three documented differences separate the nine products. The first is filing responsibility: some vendors deposit and file client taxes, while CheckMark, Drake Accounting and ezPaycheck leave filing with the firm. The second is the pricing model: per-client monthly subscriptions against flat annual licenses for unlimited clients. The third is client ownership, from white-label portals to vendor-branded accounts billed directly to the client. Entries appear with dated source checks first; the order is not a ranking.

Vendor details and trade-offs

QuickBooks Workforce

smbquickbooks.intuit.com ↗
Consider forAccounting firms whose clients use QuickBooks Online and who want to add client payroll from QuickBooks Online Accountant, as Intuit's accountant payroll page documents
Pricing notesWorkforce Payroll $50, Workforce Premium $88 and Workforce Elite $134 USD per month list; $35, $61.50 and $93.80 with the 30% ProAdvisor discount when the firm is billed, plus $5.53, $8.50 and $10.20 per employee per month as displayed; clients billed directly save 30% for the first 12 months (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateThe accountant page offers three billing models for each client subscription: the firm pays at 30% off for the life of the subscription, the client pays at 30% off for 12 months, or the firm earns 30% of the subscription price as revenue share

QuickBooks Workforce is Intuit's current name for its payroll line, and the accountant page is written for firms that run payroll for clients. Firms add payroll by signing in to QuickBooks Online Accountant. Three tiers are listed. Workforce Payroll covers full-service payroll with automated taxes and forms, next-day direct deposit and self-serve onboarding. Premium adds same-day direct deposit, expert setup and QuickBooks Time Premium. Elite adds QuickBooks Time Elite, project tracking, tax penalty protection and a personal HR advisor.

The page describes Intuit AI that gathers client attendance data and flags inconsistencies before a firm runs payroll, plus job costing and payroll reports for advisory work. Benefits such as health insurance, 401(k) plans and workers' compensation are available through integrations.

The billing options are the main reason firms compare it. A firm can pay for the client at 30% off for the life of the subscription, pass a 30% discount for the first 12 months to a client who pays directly, or enrol in the ProAdvisor Revenue Share Program. Firms whose clients do not use QuickBooks Online gain less from the integration.

Potential strengths

  • Full-service tax filing and forms are included in every tier
  • Payroll is added and managed from QuickBooks Online Accountant
  • Published per-tier list and discounted prices for ProAdvisors

Trade-offs

  • Per-client base fees add up for firms with many very small clients
  • Same-day direct deposit and expert setup start at Premium

  • Product reference
  • Pricing source
  • Billing terms: Monthly; bill the firm, bill the client or revenue share

Patriot Software

smbpatriotsoftware.com ↗
Consider forAccountants and bookkeepers who want inexpensive US payroll for small-business clients, with discounts that grow with the number of clients enrolled, as Patriot's accountant partner page documents
Pricing notesBasic Payroll $17 per month plus $4 per worker paid; Full Service Payroll $37 per month plus $5 per worker paid (list prices); accountant partner discounts of 5% for 1-5 clients, 10% for 6-20, 15% for 21-50, 20% for 51-99 and 30% for 100 or more; additional state filing $10 per state with partner discount (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluatePartner discounts rise from 5% to 30% with client count, there is no fee to partner, and a firm with six or more active clients uses Patriot payroll and accounting for its own books free

Patriot Software sells online payroll and accounting to small businesses and runs a partner program for accountants and bookkeepers. The accountant page states there is no fee to partner. Discounts apply per client at five levels, from Bronze for one to five clients to Diamond for 100 or more, and the same discounts extend to the Time and Attendance and HR add-ons.

Basic Payroll includes unlimited payrolls, automatic payroll, contractor payments, free direct deposit and an employee portal. Full Service Payroll adds federal, state and local tax filings and deposits, year-end filings at no extra fee and a filing guarantee.

For the firm, Patriot offers consolidated billing at reduced rates so the practice can bill clients its own fee, free co-branding with the firm's logo and partner-only reports covering client tax settings, payroll schedules and employee payroll totals. Support is US-based by phone, email and chat. Once the firm has six or more active clients, Patriot payroll and accounting for the firm's own business are free.

Potential strengths

  • Published list prices and a published partner discount table
  • Consolidated billing lets the firm invoice clients at its own fees
  • Partner-only reports show tax settings and payroll schedules across clients

Trade-offs

  • Basic Payroll leaves tax filing to the firm; filing requires Full Service
  • Co-branding adds the firm's logo but is not a full white-label portal
Sources and status

SurePayroll

smbsurepayroll.com ↗
Consider forAccounting firms that want to resell full-service small-business payroll under their own name, colours and brand, as SurePayroll's accountant reseller page documents
Pricing notesReseller wholesale pricing is not published on the accountant page; the public small-business calculator shows $29 USD per month plus $7 per worker, multi-state payroll at $9.99 per month and year-end W-2 and 1099-NEC processing at a $50 base fee plus $5 per form (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateThe client portal carries the firm's logo and colours and can be embedded on the firm's website, so clients see the firm rather than SurePayroll

SurePayroll, a Paychex company, runs a reseller program for accountants. The accountant page describes it as a white-label service: the firm sets up a custom portal with its logo and colours, can embed it on its own website and sends clients a link. Either the firm or the client can run payroll in the same portal.

Every client receives automated tax filing and deposits, free direct deposit, year-end W-2, W-3 and 1099-NEC processing, employee self-service, Auto-Payroll schedules, PTO tracking, on-demand reports and general ledger exports. The firm manages all client payrolls from one dashboard with role-based access for its staff.

SurePayroll states its pricing for resellers is wholesale with no long-term contract, and a firm can move clients one at a time. Onboarding help is free, and SurePayroll enters year-to-date data for new clients. The wholesale figures are not on the page, so a firm needs a quote to model its margin against the public $29 per month plus $7 per worker rate.

Potential strengths

  • White-label portal under the firm's brand
  • Clients can be added, paused or terminated at any time with no long-term contract
  • Dedicated Accountant Care Team and free onboarding support

Trade-offs

  • Wholesale reseller prices require contact with sales
  • Year-end W-2 and 1099 processing may carry separate fees

CheckMark Online Payroll

budgetcheckmark.com ↗
Consider forCPAs, bookkeepers and payroll service providers who process and file client payroll themselves and want unlimited client companies in one online dashboard, as CheckMark's Accountant Edition page documents
Pricing notes$20.00 USD base price plus $5.00 per employee per company per month; the Multiple Companies edition adds up to a 20% monthly lifetime discount on the pricing page, while the accountant page states up to 30%; each client company is billed separately; 14-day free trial (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateEach client company is invoiced separately at a low published rate, and the firm keeps control of tax filing and ACH files

CheckMark has sold payroll software since 1984 and offers an online Accountant Edition for payroll firms, accountants and multi-company businesses in the United States. It includes everything in the Business Edition plus a single dashboard for unlimited client companies, dedicated onboarding assistance, priority US-based support and an employee self-service portal for client employees.

Features include unlimited payroll runs, multiple pay periods and pay rates, custom incomes, deductions and garnishments, PTO tracking, document management, custom admin permissions and more than 50 payroll reports. The software creates ACH direct deposit files that the firm submits to its bank, or prints MICR-encoded checks on blank stock. Forms 941, 940, 944, 943, W-2 and W-3 can be printed or e-filed.

This is a do-it-yourself product: the firm owns tax filing and deposits. The billing FAQ explains that each client company is charged a base fee in the month it is added, then the previous month's employee fees with each new base fee. A desktop version with separate multi-company licensing is also sold.

Potential strengths

  • Unlimited clients, employees and payroll runs
  • Published base and per-employee prices
  • Separate invoices per client make pass-through billing simple

Trade-offs

  • The firm handles tax deposits and filing; CheckMark does not file on its behalf
  • Direct deposit means creating ACH files to send to the firm's own bank or ACH provider

Drake Accounting

specialistdrakesoftware.com ↗
Consider forTax and accounting practices that process live or after-the-fact payroll alongside client bookkeeping and want it linked to Drake Tax, as Drake's product page documents
Pricing notesProfessional Edition $795 USD per year; a payroll reporting edition for quarterly and annual payroll reporting $395 per year; both include unlimited clients, payrolls, installs per site and e-filing; bundle discounts with Drake Tax (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateOne annual license covers unlimited clients, payrolls and installations per site, with built-in e-filing of 94x, W-2 and 1099 forms

Drake Accounting is written for tax professionals who keep client books and run client payroll. The Professional Edition at $795 a year includes double-entry accounting with GAAP-compliant financials, live and after-the-fact payroll with multi-location support and batch processing, automatic journal posting, accounts payable and receivable with check printing, and financial reports. Direct deposit runs through NACHA files or Kotapay.

A second edition at $395 a year is aimed at firms focused on quarterly and annual payroll reporting. It supports direct entry of federal and state forms, generates W-2s, 1099s and all 94x forms, and includes federal and state e-filing.

Both editions have no limit on clients, installs or e-filing. Data exports to Drake Tax, and Drake Pay handles client payment collection. The software runs on Windows 11 and Windows Server, and can be networked from a shared drive. Clients cannot log in to run payroll themselves, so the model suits firms that process payroll for clients rather than with them.

Potential strengths

  • Flat annual price regardless of client count
  • Live and after-the-fact payroll with batch processing
  • Imports from QuickBooks, Sage 50, Easy/ACCT and Dillner's systems

Trade-offs

  • Windows desktop software rather than a browser application
  • The firm processes and files payroll itself; there is no full-service filing

ezPaycheck

budgethalfpricesoft.com ↗
Consider forAccountants, CPAs and payroll service providers who want desktop payroll for unlimited client companies at a flat annual license price, as Halfpricesoft's accountant page documents
Pricing notesezPaycheck 2026 license $189 USD for the first license; $50 per additional workstation license; a new license is required each tax year; no per-client or per-employee fees; 30-day free trial without a credit card (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateA $189 annual license covers unlimited client companies and employees with no monthly or per-employee charges

ezPaycheck from Halfpricesoft is in-house payroll software that runs on Windows and Mac computers. The accountant page targets CPAs, accountants and payroll service providers with one flat annual rate for unlimited companies and employees and no monthly or per-employee fees.

The software supports daily, weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly and monthly pay periods, calculates federal, state and local taxes, and allows manual after-the-fact checks. It produces Forms W-2, W-3, 940, 941 and 943, handles deductions such as 401(k), health insurance and child support, and pays both W-2 employees and 1099 contractors. Forms 941 and 940 can be e-filed, and companion products such as ezW2 and ezACH extend it.

Data is stored locally and no internet connection is needed to run payroll. Halfpricesoft recommends up to 500 active employees per company file for performance. Licenses are annual because tax tables change, so a 2027 license is needed for 2027 payroll. The trade-off is that the firm handles every filing and deposit and clients have no online access.

Potential strengths

  • No bank link required; firms can pay by paper check or direct deposit
  • Prints paychecks on blank check stock

Trade-offs

  • Desktop software with local data and no client or employee portal
  • The firm files and deposits all payroll taxes itself

Wagepoint

smbwagepoint.com ↗
Consider forAccountants and bookkeepers in Canada who manage payroll for many Canadian clients, either running it for them or letting clients run it, as Wagepoint's accountant page documents
Pricing notesSolo $20 per month plus $4 per employee or contractor, limited to one payroll run per month; Unlimited $40 per month plus $6 per employee or contractor with unlimited pay runs; partner-specific rates are not shown on the accountant page (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateA partner dashboard gives multi-admin access across clients, and remittances, T4s and T4As are filed automatically at no extra cost

Wagepoint describes itself as payroll software for bookkeepers and accountants in Canada. Its accountant page covers both managed payroll, where the firm runs pay, and client-run payroll, with the firm keeping visibility across every account.

One partner dashboard shows all clients with multi-admin access for the firm's team, and a client directory flags who needs help, connects existing Wagepoint clients or sets up new ones. Firms can make pay period and year-to-date adjustments, create custom income, deduction and benefit codes, and apply effective-dated changes without contacting support. Remittances and T4 and T4A slips are filed automatically at no extra cost. Employees use a self-serve portal to update banking details, complete TD1 forms and download paystubs. Reports include payroll registers, posting journals and workers' compensation reports.

Public plans are priced per month plus a fee per employee or contractor. A firm with clients outside Canada needs a different product for them.

Potential strengths

  • Canadian remittances and year-end forms are filed automatically
  • Firm chooses between billing clients directly or passing costs through
  • Supports managed payroll and client-run payroll side by side

Trade-offs

  • Canadian payroll only; it does not serve US clients
  • Partner pricing is not published separately from standard plans

Payroll Relief

specialistaccountantsworld.com ↗
Consider forAccounting firms and payroll service practices that process payroll for many US clients and want the firm to own the client relationship, as the Payroll Relief product page and brochure document
Pricing notesQuote-based; the brochure describes a per-paycheck or per-payroll fee but no dollar figures are published; Employee Self Service is an add-on and ACH fee collection carries a nominal per-transaction fee (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateSold only to accountants: the brochure states AccountantsWorld never sells to the firm's clients or competes with the firm

Payroll Relief from AccountantsWorld is cloud payroll built for professional payroll processors; its brochure is now published on the IRIS Software Group website. The product page covers federal and all 50 states including local jurisdictions, unlimited pay types and deductions, contractors, certified payroll and departmental and job costing allocation for businesses with up to 1,000 employees.

Direct deposit, tax payment, tax filing and electronic child support run automatically, with calculation accuracy guaranteed. Firms can batch-approve payrolls, print checks in batch and, at year end, print, email, e-file and release W-2s and 1099s to employee portals in batch. Clients can be given anything from no access to nearly full access, and exception-based timesheets let clients enter hours themselves. The Payroll Snapshot shows upcoming payrolls, e-filing status and tax payments for all clients.

Payroll Relief integrates with QuickBooks, Creative Solutions, Sage and AccountantsWorld's Accounting Power, and exports a generic file for other ledgers. Pricing requires a sales conversation.

Potential strengths

  • Automatic direct deposit, tax payment, filing and child support payments
  • Batch approval, check printing and year-end W-2 and 1099 delivery
  • SOC 2 Type II compliance stated on the product page

Trade-offs

  • No published prices
  • Employee Self Service onboarding is a paid add-on

Accounting CS Payroll

specialisttax.thomsonreuters.com ↗
Consider forAccounting firms that provide payroll services at volume and already use Thomson Reuters CS Professional Suite products, as the Accounting CS Payroll page documents
Pricing notesQuote-based through Thomson Reuters sales; no price is published on the product page; cloud and download trials are offered (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateBatch-oriented, cross-client processing lets staff run payroll for many clients without changing files, and the product calculates the firm's fees and sends invoices

Accounting CS Payroll is the payroll component of Thomson Reuters Accounting CS, designed for accountants providing payroll services. Processing is batch-oriented with cross-client capability, and Thomson Reuters states that firms can increase the number of clients served without add-on modules or extra staff.

Setup can be standardised for new clients and employees. Time arrives through remote payroll utilities or spreadsheet imports. The form library covers W-2, W-2C, the 940, 941, 943, 944 and 945 families and their corrections, 1095-C and 1099. Payment options include pre-printed and remotely printed checks, direct deposit and PayCard. Built-in reports and a report designer sit alongside fee calculation and invoicing for the firm's payroll service.

Client payroll administrators approve data in NetClient CS portals, processed checks and reports post back to the portal, and employees view paystubs and W-2s and update W-4 details online. The software can be hosted through Virtual Office CS. Pricing requires a sales conversation.

Potential strengths

  • Large federal, state and local form library including 1095-C
  • Multiple staff can work on one client payroll at the same time
  • Client approval and paystub delivery through NetClient CS portals

Trade-offs

  • No published price
  • Part of the Accounting CS platform, which suits firms already invested in the CS Professional Suite

How to choose a vendor

Decide who files the taxes

QuickBooks Workforce, Patriot Full Service, SurePayroll, Payroll Relief and Wagepoint calculate, deposit and file payroll taxes as part of the service. CheckMark Online Payroll, Drake Accounting and ezPaycheck produce the forms and e-file files, but the firm remains responsible for deposits and deadlines. A firm without payroll compliance staff should treat that difference as the first filter.

Match the pricing model to the client book

Per-client subscriptions such as QuickBooks Workforce, Patriot and CheckMark charge a base fee and a per-employee fee for each client company. Flat licenses such as Drake Accounting at $795 a year and ezPaycheck at $189 a year cover unlimited companies, so cost per client falls as the book grows. A firm with a few large clients and one with fifty small ones will reach different answers.

Check who owns the client relationship

SurePayroll offers a white-label portal under the firm's brand, Payroll Relief states it never sells to the firm's clients, and Patriot offers free co-branding. QuickBooks Workforce lets the firm bill the client, bill itself or take a revenue share. Firms that want to set their own payroll fee should confirm whether the vendor bills the client directly.

Frequently asked questions

What is payroll software for accounting firms?

It is payroll software that lets an accounting or bookkeeping firm run payroll for several client businesses from one login. Products in this category add a multi-client dashboard, partner pricing or firm licensing, and options for who runs payroll and who receives the bill. Each of the nine vendors on this page documents accountants, CPAs or bookkeepers as a target buyer on its own website.

How is this page different from the main payroll software comparison?

The main payroll software comparison covers products bought by employers, including Gusto, Rippling, RUN Powered by ADP, Paychex Flex and Deel. This page lists a separate set of nine products selected because each vendor documents a partner program, accountant edition or firm license for payroll run on behalf of clients. A firm can use both pages to build a wider shortlist.

How much does payroll software for accountants cost?

Published prices on this page fall into two models. Per-client subscriptions charge each client company a base fee plus a per-employee fee: CheckMark starts at $20 plus $5 per employee, Patriot Basic at $17 plus $4 per worker before partner discounts, and QuickBooks Workforce at $50 list or $35 for ProAdvisors billed to the firm, plus a per-employee fee. Flat licenses cover unlimited clients: ezPaycheck at $189 per tax year and Drake Accounting at $395 or $795 per year. Payroll Relief and Accounting CS Payroll are quote-based.

Can an accounting firm offer payroll under its own brand?

SurePayroll documents a white-label reseller program where the client portal shows the firm's logo and colours and can be embedded on the firm's website. Patriot offers free co-branding with the firm's logo. Payroll Relief states that AccountantsWorld never sells to the firm's clients. Accounting CS Payroll delivers paystubs and reports through the firm's NetClient CS portal.

Which products file payroll taxes for the firm's clients?

QuickBooks Workforce, Patriot Full Service Payroll, SurePayroll and Wagepoint file and deposit payroll taxes as part of the service, and Payroll Relief automates tax payments and filings for the firm. CheckMark Online Payroll, Drake Accounting and ezPaycheck produce forms and e-file files, but the firm is responsible for deposits and filing deadlines. Patriot Basic Payroll also leaves filing to the firm.

What suits a firm with only a handful of payroll clients?

Per-client products with no minimum, such as Patriot, CheckMark and QuickBooks Workforce, let a firm start with one client. Patriot's partner discount starts at 5% for one to five clients. A firm that wants to run payroll in-house for very small clients could compare ezPaycheck's $189 annual license against per-client fees. Firm-licensed engines such as Accounting CS Payroll are designed for larger payroll books.

Is there payroll software for accounting firms in Canada?

Wagepoint is the Canadian product on this page. Its accountant page documents a partner dashboard, firm-billed or client-billed options, and automatic remittances and T4 and T4A filing for Canadian clients. The other eight products cover US payroll.

How was this comparison compiled?

Each vendor's accountant, product and pricing pages were read on 11 October 2026, and every price comes from the vendor's own website. No product was installed or used, and no vendor confirmed the details. Entries with dated source checks appear first; the order within that group is content sequence, not a ranking. Partner pricing changes often, so firms should request current terms from each vendor.
