These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.
Machine translation software turns text, documents and, in some products, images and speech into another language automatically. Buyers use it to localise websites and apps, translate customer support conversations and user-generated content, process multilingual evidence in legal and forensic work, and give employees secure translation tools. This page covers machine translation engines, APIs and products. Translation management systems, which coordinate translators and workflows, are outside its scope.
The market divides into three groups. Google Cloud Translation, Amazon Translate and Microsoft Azure Translator are hyperscaler APIs billed per million characters. DeepL and Lara Translate sell subscription apps for people alongside developer APIs. SYSTRAN, RWS Language Weaver and Lingvanex focus on enterprise and private deployment, including on-premises servers.
The comparison covers eight products. Details come from each vendor’s public product, pricing and documentation pages, checked on 13 October 2026.
Vendor details and trade-offs
DeepL is a language AI company that sells machine translation in two forms. DeepL Translator is a subscription product for people, with web, desktop, mobile and browser apps, full-page translation, file translation and integrations with Microsoft Word, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. The DeepL API lets developers build the same translation into websites, internal apps and products, and DeepL also sells API access to its Write and Voice products.
The Translator tiers scale by characters and features. Individual includes 300,000 characters and 3 file translations a month. Team raises that to 1,000,000 characters per user, 20 file translations, bulk file translation, 5 glossaries, analytics and single sign-on. Business adds unlimited characters under a fair usage policy, 100 file translations, translation memory, SCIM user provisioning and a 99.0% availability figure. Enterprise adds bring-your-own-key encryption, 99.9% availability and a dedicated account team.
For developers, DeepL's quickstart documents REST requests and official client libraries, with a separate endpoint for the free API plan. DeepL states it is trusted by more than 200,000 businesses and translates in over 100 languages through the API.

Cloud Translation is Google Cloud's machine translation API. Google's product page describes translation of websites, apps, documents and media across 189 languages, with pre-trained and custom models and Gemini-powered Adaptive translation. The API comes in two editions. Basic (v2) covers text translation and language detection with the default neural model. Advanced (v3) adds batch text and document translation, glossaries, custom models trained with AutoML Translation and access to the LLM-based models.
Billing follows the model and the method. NMT and custom models charge for input characters per target language. The Translation LLM and Adaptive translation charge for input and output characters separately. Batch requests are counted as source characters multiplied by the number of target languages, and failed operations are charged only for the translations returned. Document translation of DOCX, PPT and PDF files is charged per page, while XLSX documents are metered as text.
Google also lists Translation Hub, a managed portal for business users, on the same product page. For developers, the main decision is which model to call for each content type and how much a custom model improves on the default NMT output for a given domain.
Potential strengths
- Monthly free allowance of 500,000 characters
- No charge for language detection when the source language is omitted
Trade-offs
- Custom model translation costs four times the NMT rate at low volumes
- LLM models bill both input and output characters, which complicates cost estimates

Amazon Translate is AWS's neural machine translation service. AWS describes it as fast, affordable and customisable translation, with use cases that include real-time translation of social feeds, profiles and comments, multilingual sentiment analysis and cross-lingual chat, email and ticketing for support agents. The pricing page states that standard text translation covers 75 languages.
The service offers four modes. Standard Text Translation works in real time. Batch Document Translation processes a folder of files in an Amazon S3 bucket with one asynchronous API call, supporting TXT, HTML, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX and XLIFF. Real-Time Document Translation returns a translated file with its formatting preserved, for TXT, HTML and DOCX. Active Custom Translation takes example translations, called parallel data, with a batch job and uses them to adjust output at runtime.
Pricing is per character, including white space, and AWS publishes worked examples, such as about $0.05 to translate an average email. For buyers already using AWS identity, storage and billing, the service fits into existing infrastructure without a separate vendor contract.
Potential strengths
- 12-month free tier of 2 million characters a month
- Batch translation of TXT, HTML, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX and XLIFF files from S3
Trade-offs
- Custom output costs four times the standard rate
- Free tier lapses after 12 months, unlike permanent free allowances elsewhere

Azure Translator, now listed by Microsoft as Azure Translator in Foundry Tools, is a cloud-based neural machine translation service. Microsoft's documentation states that it powers many Microsoft products and services and works with any operating system through REST APIs and SDKs.
The service covers several features. Text translation runs in real time, and the 2026-06-06 version adds a choice of large language models, adaptive custom translation and more request parameters. Document translation runs asynchronously in batch from Azure Blob storage or synchronously for a single file, preserving structure and format. Adaptive custom translation builds a bilingual index from 5 to 10,000 aligned segment pairs to adapt supported LLMs, and Custom Translator trains models on domain terminology and style.
Translator also runs in containers. Connected containers report usage to Azure, while disconnected containers run offline on annual commitments. That option suits government and regulated buyers who need translation without content leaving their network, which is less common among public cloud APIs.
Potential strengths
- Lowest published standard text rate among the three hyperscaler APIs in this comparison
- Permanent free tier of 2 million characters a month
Trade-offs
- The Translator pricing page loads its figures at runtime, so buyers may need the calculator or price API to see rates
- Custom translation costs four times the standard text rate

- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Pay-as-you-go monthly; monthly commitment tiers; annual disconnected containers

Frequently asked questions
What is machine translation software?
Machine translation software uses neural networks or large language models to translate text, documents and sometimes speech between languages automatically. It is sold as cloud APIs that developers call from their own applications, as subscription apps for employees, and as servers installed on an organisation's own infrastructure. It differs from translation management systems, which organise human and machine translation workflows rather than producing the translation.
How much does a machine translation API cost?
Most APIs charge per million characters. Published standard rates checked in October 2026 were US$5 at Lingvanex, US$10 at Azure Translator, US$15 at Amazon Translate and US$20 at Google Cloud Translation NMT, with SYSTRAN at €14.99 and Lara at US$19.99 to US$24.99. Custom models cost more, from US$40 at Azure to US$80 at Google. RWS Language Weaver is quoted.
Is there a free machine translation API?
Several vendors offer a free allowance. Google gives 500,000 characters a month as a $10 credit, Azure's F0 tier includes 2 million characters a month, Amazon gives 2 million characters a month for the first 12 months, DeepL has a free Developer API plan, and Lara's free plan includes 10,000 API characters a month. SYSTRAN offers a 14-day trial with 500,000 characters.
Which machine translation engine gives the best quality?
No single engine is best for every language pair and domain. Vendors publish their own comparisons: RWS reports Language Weaver Pro ahead of DeepL NextGen and Gemini on its benchmark, and Lara describes its model as more accurate than generic LLMs. Buyers should run the shortlisted APIs on a sample of their own content and have reviewers or an automatic metric score the results.
Can machine translation run on-premises?
Yes. SYSTRAN Translate Server, RWS Language Weaver Edge and Lingvanex On-Premise install on the customer's own infrastructure, and Microsoft offers connected and disconnected Azure Translator containers on commitment pricing. These options suit defence, legal, healthcare and government organisations that cannot send content to a shared public cloud.
What is the difference between NMT and LLM translation?
Neural machine translation models are trained specifically to translate sentence by sentence and are usually fast and cheap per character. LLM-based translation uses large language models that can consider more context, follow instructions and adapt style. Google, Azure, Lara and RWS now offer LLM-based options. Google bills its Translation LLM on both input and output characters, unlike its NMT model.
Can machine translation be customised with company terminology?
Yes, in several ways. DeepL, Google, Lara and SYSTRAN support glossaries or dictionaries. Google and Azure train custom models on a customer's parallel data, Amazon's Active Custom Translation applies parallel data at runtime, and Azure's adaptive custom translation adapts LLMs from a few thousand segment pairs. Customisation usually carries a higher per-character rate.
How was this comparison compiled?
StatWharf Editorial compared eight machine translation products using each vendor's public product, pricing and documentation pages, and Microsoft's Retail Prices API for Azure, checked on 13 October 2026. Prices are shown in the currency each vendor displayed. No product was tested hands-on, no translation quality was measured, and no vendor reviewed or confirmed its entry. The order is not a ranking.
