These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

Legal case management software organises a law firm’s matters in one place: client and contact records, documents, court deadlines, tasks, emails, time entries, invoices and trust account balances. Most products sold under this name are law practice management systems that combine case management with billing and legal accounting. The market splits between published-price tools for solo and small firms, document-automation-led products for small firms in consumer practice areas, and quote-based platforms for midsize firms, litigation practices and legal departments.

The comparison below covers eleven products. Features and pricing come from each vendor’s product and pricing pages, checked in October 2026. Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther, CosmoLex and Rocket Matter publish price figures. The other profiles record what each pricing page does state, such as price drivers, implementation terms or the sales process. The main differences are where trust accounting sits, how much workflow automation is included and how implementation is charged.

Related pages cover contract management software and compliance software.

Solo practitioners and small firms can compare Lawcus, Lawft, CasePeer, CARET Legal and other small-firm products in legal case management software for small law firms.

How to choose a vendor

Compare the annual and monthly rate

The published prices on this page are per user per month, and most vendors show a lower rate for annual billing. PracticePanther and CosmoLex both state a saving of $120 per user per year on annual terms, and MyCase shows a similar gap. Rocket Matter lists annual prices only. A buyer should compare prices on the same billing term and count every attorney, paralegal and staff member who needs a seat.

Check where trust accounting sits

Trust accounting rules for client funds apply to most US law firms, and vendors package it differently. Clio and CosmoLex include trust and operating reconciliation in every plan. MyCase sells MyCase Accounting at $39 per user per month on top of a plan, PracticePanther places full PantherAccounting Plus in Business Pro, and Rocket Matter puts built-in business accounting in Elite. Firms should confirm three-way reconciliation and compliance reports before signing.

Ask what implementation includes

Implementation ranges from self-serve setup to a scoped project. Clio offers self-serve migration on Starter and guided migration above it, and Rocket Matter states free data migration on every plan. Actionstep prices per user plus implementation fees, LEAP states a one-time implementation fee may apply, and Centerbase describes onboarding of 12 to 14 weeks included in every subscription. Firms moving years of matter history should ask for a written migration scope.

Frequently asked questions

What is legal case management software?

Legal case management software keeps each matter's contacts, documents, deadlines, tasks, communications and billing in one record. Most products also track time, issue invoices, handle trust accounting for client funds and offer a client portal. Vendors often use the terms case management and practice management interchangeably, with practice management usually implying billing and accounting as well.

How much does legal case management software cost?

Five of the eleven products publish prices as of October 2026. Clio starts at $49 per user per month. MyCase costs $50 to $130 and PracticePanther $49 to $114 per user per month on annual billing. CosmoLex costs $49 to $129 billed yearly, and Rocket Matter $59 to $145 paid annually. Smokeball, Filevine, Actionstep, LEAP, Litify and Centerbase quote individually.

Which tools include trust accounting?

Nine of the eleven list trust accounting on their product or pricing pages; Filevine and Litify describe billing and payments without naming trust accounting on the pages checked. Clio and CosmoLex include trust and operating reconciliation in every plan. MyCase includes trust accounting in Basic and sells three-way reconciliation through MyCase Accounting. PracticePanther adds full accounting in Business Pro, and Rocket Matter adds business accounting in Elite.

Which products suit personal injury firms?

Filevine lists medical chronology, deposition and lead intake tools and quotes plaintiff-side firms. Clio sells Clio for Personal Injury as an add-on for medical records, damages and settlements. Litify covers intake and matter management for larger firms. Buyers should check settlement and lien tracking in a demo.

What is the difference between small-firm and midsize-firm tools?

Small-firm tools such as Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther, CosmoLex and Rocket Matter publish prices and allow self-serve trials. Actionstep and Centerbase state they target midsize firms, quote per user and run implementation projects, with Centerbase describing 12 to 14 weeks. Litify is aimed at larger firms and legal departments.

Do these products include AI features?

Most now do. Clio includes AI billing and client updates from Core. MyCase sells 8am IQ assistants in Pro and Advanced. Smokeball sells the Archie assistant as an add-on. Filevine offers drafting and deposition tools, and Litify offers agentic workflows through ACE 2.0. Buyers should ask how firm data is used and whether AI costs extra.

Can a firm migrate data from its current system?

Several vendors describe migration help on their pricing pages, and terms differ. Rocket Matter states free data migration on every plan, and Clio offers guided migration from Core. LEAP lists migration from many named systems and may charge a one-time fee. Smokeball confirms migration costs in the quote, and Centerbase includes full data history.

How was this comparison compiled?

Each vendor's product and pricing pages were read on 7 October 2026, and pricing notes record what those pages showed on that date. The comparison is based on published information only. The products were not used or tested, and no vendor confirmed its entry. Entries with dated source checks appear first, and their order does not rank product quality.
