Best IT Asset Management Software (2026): Top 10 Compared

Updated October 2026By StatWharf Editorial10 vendorsMethodology

IT asset management (ITAM) software discovers the hardware, software and cloud resources an organization runs, keeps one record per asset and tracks each item from purchase to disposal, including licenses, contracts and warranties. The ten products below fall into four groups. Lansweeper and InvGate Asset Management lead with network discovery and inventory. Snipe-IT and GLPI are open-source systems with paid hosting. ManageEngine AssetExplorer, Freshservice and Jira Service Management tie asset records to a service desk and CMDB. ServiceNow, Ivanti Neurons for ITAM and Flexera One target large estates with procurement, software license compliance and audit work.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

IT asset management software gives IT teams a single, current record of the technology an organization owns: computers, servers, network and operational equipment, installed software, SaaS subscriptions and cloud resources. It finds assets through network scans, agents or connectors, assigns them to people and locations, tracks warranties, contracts and licenses, and records each item from purchase to retirement. Tools for tracking tools, vehicles and other physical equipment are compared on a separate asset tracking software page.

The comparison below covers ten products across discovery-led inventory, open-source asset registers, service desk platforms with asset modules and enterprise license management suites. Information comes from each vendor’s own product, documentation or pricing page, checked on 11 October 2026. Seven vendors publish prices; ServiceNow, Ivanti and Flexera quote on request.

Vendor details and trade-offs

Lansweeper

mid-marketlansweeper.com ↗
Consider forIT and security teams that need to find every connected device, including unmanaged and operational technology, and keep a normalized inventory without per-user licensing, as Lansweeper's product and pricing pages describe
Pricing notesFree for up to 100 assets after a 14-day full trial. Starter is from $299 per month billed annually and includes 2,000 assets and one installation. Pro is from $528 per month billed annually, includes 2,000 assets expandable to 9,000, up to three installations, vulnerability and lifecycle insights and all integrations. Enterprise is custom, starts at 10,000 assets and adds full API access and a customer success manager. All plans have unlimited user seats and are billed annually (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateAgentless and agent-based discovery of IT, OT and cloud assets, reconciled into one normalized record per asset

Lansweeper describes itself as a cyber asset intelligence platform for IT and security teams. Its core is discovery: the scanning engine identifies servers, workstations and network devices, extends to operational technology on factory and building networks, and maps cloud and virtual resources across providers. Discovery runs without an agent, with an agent available for remote and work-from-home devices. Connectors import and reconcile inventory from systems such as SCCM, Intune, AirWatch and G Suite MDM, and warranty status is collected automatically for physical devices.

Discovered data is reconciled into one record per asset, and software titles, versions, vendors, models and firmware are normalized. Dashboards, a report builder and a library of built-in reports sit on top. Federation combines several Lansweeper installations into a single view, with the number of installations set by plan.

The Pro plan adds vulnerability and lifecycle insights that flag software and hardware reaching end of life. Lansweeper states that it is used in more than 30,000 environments.

Potential strengths

  • Published asset-based prices and a free tier for up to 100 assets
  • Unlimited user seats on every plan

Trade-offs

  • Starter limits integrations to service desk ticket enrichment
  • Vulnerability and lifecycle insights require the Pro plan or above

Snipe-IT

open-sourcesnipeitapp.com ↗
Consider forOrganizations that want to record who holds each device, license and accessory, either free on their own servers or on low-cost managed hosting, as the Snipe-IT pricing page and documentation describe
Pricing notesSelf-hosted Snipe-IT is free. Managed hosting by Grokability costs $39.99 per month or $399.99 per year for Basic, $99.99 per month or $999.99 per year for Small Business, and $249.99 per month or $2,499.99 per year for small Dedicated Hosting. Medium and large dedicated servers cost $5,000 and $7,500 per year. All hosted plans include unlimited users and assets; phone support and API integration help sit in a separate Enterprise Support Plan (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCheck-in and check-out of assets, licenses and accessories that prevents one item being assigned to two people

Snipe-IT is an open-source IT asset management application maintained by Grokability, based in San Diego. It can be downloaded and run on an organization's own server at no cost, or hosted by Grokability on AWS in twelve regions, including Oregon, Northern Virginia, Ireland, Frankfurt, Singapore and Sydney.

The documentation centers on accountability. Every asset carries a unique tag and can be checked out to a person, a location or another asset, although the documentation recommends assigning to people because locations cannot be held responsible for loss or damage. Licenses and accessories follow the same check-in and check-out model, which prevents double assignment. Status labels mark assets as deployable, undeployable, pending or archived.

Admin settings cover branding, alerts, LDAP and two-factor authentication. Hosted plans add automated upgrades, backups and server maintenance, with LDAP sync capacity and IP restrictions increasing by tier. Snipe-IT reports about 22 million managed assets across 5,960 customers.

Potential strengths

  • Free to self-host with no asset or user limits
  • REST API and frequent releases from an active open-source project

Trade-offs

  • Pages reviewed describe manual entry, import and API rather than built-in network discovery
  • Self-hosting leaves backups, TLS and upgrades to the customer

ManageEngine AssetExplorer

mid-marketmanageengine.com ↗
Consider forIT managers handling assets across several sites who need hardware and software discovery, license compliance, purchasing and a CMDB with a choice of cloud or on-premises deployment, as ManageEngine's product page describes
Pricing notesPriced by number of IT assets. The cloud edition costs $115 per month or $1,245 per year for 250 assets, rising to $1,545 per month or $16,695 per year for 10,000 assets. The on-premises edition costs $955 per year for 250 assets, $2,995 for 1,000 and $11,995 for 10,000, with additional 1,000-asset packs at $1,195. Remote control is a cloud add-on at $315 per concurrent session per year. Technical support is included, and a 30-day cloud trial covers 250 assets (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateDrag-and-drop life cycle designer with separate workflows for each product type

AssetExplorer is ManageEngine's dedicated IT asset management product. ManageEngine positions it for quick deployment across multiple sites, with on-premises and cloud editions.

Discovery uses agent-based and agentless methods, and barcode, QR code and RFID scanners are supported for physical audits. Software inventory is reconciled, usage is monitored across installations, and unauthorized or prohibited software can be flagged. License management shows compliance status and can allocate, upgrade or downgrade licenses, including suites and service packs.

A drag-and-drop canvas lets administrators design asset life cycles, with different workflows for each product type and automated actions within them. Automations include notifications, asset acknowledgements and assigning assets to users based on login history. A CMDB holds configuration items with business views of services and dependencies, and purchase order, vendor and contract management is built in. When the 30-day cloud trial ends, the account drops to a free edition rather than closing.

Potential strengths

  • Full price list for cloud and on-premises editions
  • Support included and a free edition after the trial ends

Trade-offs

  • Remote control and remote access cost extra
  • Pricing above 10,000 assets requires contacting sales

Freshservice

mid-marketfreshworks.com ↗
Consider forIT teams that already run, or plan to run, the Freshservice service desk and want discovery, hardware asset management and a CMDB in the same product, as Freshworks' ITAM pricing and support pages describe
Pricing notesITAM is licensed in Asset Units sold in packs of 500. Freshworks' ITAM pricing page states that pricing starts at $125 per month per 500 Asset Units; plan-level figures were not displayed on the page. The Growth, Pro and Enterprise IT service management plans, from $49 and $99 per agent per month billed annually for Growth and Pro, include the ITAM Growth package and 100 Asset Units. A 14-day trial covers the Enterprise plan (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateITAM Enterprise adds service discovery, application dependency mapping and business service mapping

Freshservice is Freshworks' IT service management product. Since 31 March 2026 new customers can buy Freshservice IT Asset Management as its own set of plans, Growth, Pro and Enterprise, priced in Asset Units rather than agents.

Every ITAM plan includes discovery for Windows, macOS and Linux, discovery of network, cloud, storage and data center infrastructure, agent and agentless options, hardware asset management, life cycle management, a CMDB and workflow automation. Pro adds contracts and purchase orders, software asset management, SaaS discovery and normalization with end-of-life and end-of-support data. Enterprise adds service discovery and application dependency mapping. Data center infrastructure management, covering PDUs, UPS units and room layouts, is listed on all three plans.

Asset Units weight assets by type. A server, VM or network device costs four units, a desktop, mobile device or SaaS user one, a container half a unit, and non-IP physical assets or archived devices one twenty-fifth. Buyers should count each asset class before estimating cost.

Potential strengths

  • Asset records sit in the same CMDB as incidents and changes
  • Agent and agentless discovery included from the Growth plan

Trade-offs

  • Software asset management and contracts require ITAM Pro
  • Servers and VMs consume four Asset Units each, which raises cost for infrastructure-heavy estates

InvGate Asset Management

mid-marketinvgate.com ↗
Consider forOrganizations with 500 to 5,000 networked devices that want discovery, a CMDB and software deployment without a service desk purchase, as InvGate's pricing page describes
Pricing notesStarter is a fixed $1,499 per year for 500 IP devices with automated discovery, AI Hub and health rules. Pro costs $5 per IP device per year, starts at $2,500 per year, covers 500 to 5,000 IP devices and adds SSO, automatic CMDB mapping and software deployment. Enterprise is custom, starts at $12,000 per year, supports up to 1,000,000 IP devices and adds on-premises hosting and data residency options. A 30-day free trial requires no credit card (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateHealth rules that flag inventory problems, with software deployment from the Pro plan

InvGate Asset Management is the asset management product from InvGate, which also sells InvGate Service Management as a help desk. The pricing page lists the two products with separate plans.

Licensing is per active IP device rather than per user. InvGate's licensing FAQ states that the product does not use a modular structure: core features including CMDB, discovery, reporting, integrations and workflow automation are part of the platform, and the Starter, Pro and Enterprise tiers differ by scale, support level and advanced capabilities. The pricing page shows that software deployment, SSO and automatic CMDB mapping begin at Pro.

Starter covers 500 IP devices with automated discovery, the AI Hub and health rules, which flag devices that fall outside defined conditions. Enterprise scales to a million devices and adds dedicated servers, data residency options and on-premises hosting. Contract length and deployment type also affect the quoted figure above the published tiers.

Potential strengths

  • Published per-device prices with a fixed-price entry plan
  • Core features are not sold as separate modules

Trade-offs

  • Software deployment and SSO require Pro
  • On-premises hosting only on the Enterprise plan

Jira Service Management

mid-marketatlassian.com ↗
Consider forOrganizations already using Jira that want IT assets and configuration items modeled in their own schema and attached to service requests and changes, as Atlassian's Assets feature page describes
Pricing notesFree for up to three agents, which does not list asset management. Standard costs $20 per agent per month and includes asset and configuration management; Premium costs $51.42 per agent per month and adds change management and advanced incident and problem management. Figures are from the monthly view of the pricing calculator, and Atlassian states annual billing saves up to 17%. Enterprise pricing is annual only (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateAssets Data Manager reconciles records from several sources before they reach service workflows

Jira Service Management is Atlassian's service desk, now sold as part of its Service Collection. Its Assets feature is a flexible database for hardware, software, cloud resources and configuration items, rather than a fixed CMDB structure. Teams can start from Atlassian's Common Data Model schemas or a hardware asset management template, or build their own object types.

Assets link directly to requests, incidents, changes and employee workflows, so an agent handling a ticket sees the affected device or service and its dependencies. Discovery detects IP-enabled assets and their attributes, and more than 30 connectors import data from tools such as Jamf, Intune, SCCM, AWS and Azure. Assets Data Manager consolidates, cleanses and reconciles data from several sources before it reaches downstream work.

Queries support audits, cost reviews and impact analysis, and automation updates life cycle status, ownership and notifications. Atlassian's Rovo AI can search assets and answer natural-language questions about them.

Potential strengths

  • Assets included from the Standard plan rather than sold separately
  • Unlimited customers, with cost tied to agents rather than asset count

Trade-offs

  • The Free plan does not list asset management
  • Assets is a flexible database, so schemas and imports take design work

Ivanti Neurons for ITAM

enterpriseivanti.com ↗
Consider forIT teams that want asset records tied to purchasing, invoices, contracts and stock, and connected to Ivanti service and endpoint management, as Ivanti's ITAM pages describe
Pricing notesQuote-based. The product page links to plans and pricing and the ITAM overview points to ITSM pricing and packaging for full ITAM capabilities, but no figures appear on the ITAM pages reviewed (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateAsset data foundation built into the Ivanti Neurons platform, extended by full ITAM through Ivanti ITSM

Ivanti Neurons for ITAM consolidates hardware, server, client, virtual, cloud and software asset data and tracks each asset from purchase to disposal. It runs on Ivanti's multi-tenant cloud platform, which Ivanti states is ISO 27001 certified, and is also available on-premises.

Ivanti now describes two layers. An asset data foundation included in the Neurons platform covers continuous discovery, normalized asset data, ownership tracking, life cycle visibility, a product catalog and configuration relationships. Full ITAM, packaged with Ivanti ITSM, adds procurement and purchase orders, invoice and shipment tracking, contract and vendor management, stock management and asset requests through the service catalog.

A mobile app supports barcode scanning to look up or update assets in the field, and vendor scorecards aggregate supplier performance. Bots extend monitoring, such as one that checks device battery health and flags replacement. The asset repository feeds the service management CMDB and supplies context to Ivanti's autonomous endpoint management.

Potential strengths

  • Covers purchase orders, invoices, shipments, stock and disposal
  • Available in Ivanti's cloud or on-premises

Trade-offs

  • Full life cycle features depend on Ivanti ITSM packaging
  • No public pricing

How to choose a vendor

Know what the vendor counts before comparing prices

Pricing units differ more than headline figures suggest. Lansweeper and ManageEngine price by asset bands, InvGate by IP device, Freshservice by Asset Units in which a server counts as four units and a laptop as one, Jira Service Management and GLPI by agent or technician seat, and Snipe-IT by hosting plan with unlimited assets and users. Counting servers, end-user devices, SaaS users and non-IP equipment separately gives a fair comparison.

Decide whether discovery or record-keeping is the real gap

Teams that cannot say what is on the network need scanning: Lansweeper, InvGate, ManageEngine, Freshservice and GLPI all describe agent or agentless discovery. Teams whose problem is assignment, check-out and accountability for laptops and peripherals may need only a well-structured register such as Snipe-IT, fed from existing endpoint tools like Intune or Jamf.

Treat software license compliance as a separate requirement

Hardware inventory and software license positions are different jobs. Publisher audits for Microsoft, Oracle or IBM depend on entitlement data and use rights, which is where Flexera One and ServiceNow Software Asset Management concentrate. Freshservice places software asset management in its ITAM Pro plan rather than Growth, so the plan level matters as much as the vendor.

Frequently asked questions

What is IT asset management software?

IT asset management (ITAM) software keeps an accurate record of an organization's technology assets, including laptops, servers, network devices, software licenses, SaaS subscriptions and cloud resources, and tracks each one from purchase to disposal. Most products combine discovery, a central inventory, life cycle workflows and reporting. Some, such as Flexera One and ServiceNow, add deep software license compliance; others, such as Snipe-IT, focus on assigning and accounting for devices.

How much does IT asset management software cost?

Seven vendors on this page publish prices. Snipe-IT is free to self-host and hosting starts at $39.99 per month. ManageEngine AssetExplorer starts at $955 per year on-premises for 250 assets. InvGate Asset Management starts at $1,499 per year for 500 IP devices. Lansweeper Starter is from $299 per month billed annually for 2,000 assets. Freshservice ITAM starts at $125 per month per 500 Asset Units, Jira Service Management Standard costs $20 per agent per month, and GLPI Public Cloud costs €19 per user per month. ServiceNow, Ivanti and Flexera quote on request.

What is the difference between IT asset management and asset tracking software?

IT asset management deals with networked technology: it discovers devices and installed software, reconciles licenses and connects assets to service management. General asset tracking software follows physical equipment such as tools, vehicles or AV kit, usually with barcodes or RFID tags and check-out records. StatWharf compares those products on a separate asset tracking software page.

Is there free IT asset management software?

Yes. Snipe-IT can be self-hosted at no cost with unlimited assets and users. GLPI is open source and can also be self-hosted. Lansweeper offers a free plan for up to 100 assets after its 14-day trial, Jira Service Management is free for three agents without asset management, and ManageEngine AssetExplorer moves to a free edition when its 30-day cloud trial ends.

What is the difference between ITAM and a CMDB?

ITAM records what an organization owns and what each asset costs: purchase, assignment, warranty, licenses and disposal. A configuration management database (CMDB) records how configuration items depend on each other so that incidents and changes can be assessed. Freshservice, ManageEngine AssetExplorer, Jira Service Management, ServiceNow and GLPI each provide both in one product, with asset records feeding the CMDB.

Do IT asset management tools manage software licenses?

Most do, to different depths. ManageEngine AssetExplorer tracks license compliance and allocations, Freshservice includes software asset management from its ITAM Pro plan, and ServiceNow and Flexera One focus on publisher entitlements, use rights and audit defense for vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle and IBM. Snipe-IT records licenses and their assignment but does not describe publisher use rights analysis.

Agent-based or agentless discovery: which is better?

Agentless discovery scans the network from a central point and needs nothing installed on each device, which suits offices and data centers. Agents report from the device itself, which covers laptops that rarely connect to the corporate network. Lansweeper, ManageEngine AssetExplorer and Freshservice offer both, and many teams use agentless scanning on site and agents for remote staff.

How was this comparison compiled?

StatWharf Editorial selected ten IT asset management products with live product pages, covering discovery-led inventory, open-source systems, service desk platforms with asset modules and enterprise license management suites. Each vendor's own product, documentation or pricing page was read on 11 October 2026, and prices are recorded as published with billing units and conditions. No product was installed or tested, no vendor reviewed its entry, and the order of entries is not a ranking.
