These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.
Dental imaging software sits between a practice’s X-ray hardware and its patient records. It captures images from intraoral sensors, phosphor plate scanners, intraoral cameras and panoramic, cephalometric or CBCT units, stores them against the patient, and gives clinicians tools to enhance, measure, annotate and compare images over time. Buyers are typically practice owners, office managers and IT leads at dental service organisations, and the choice is often tied to sensor and X-ray equipment purchases. Newer products add AI detection of caries and other findings, implant and endodontic planning, and cloud sharing with labs and specialists.
The comparison below covers nine products: five platforms from imaging hardware manufacturers, two cloud platforms that work across sensor brands, an enterprise dental PACS for institutions and large groups, and a sensor maker’s own imaging software. Pricing comes from each vendor’s public pricing or product page, checked on 12 October 2026. Eight vendors price by quote; Carestream lists a licence and monthly support price in its online store.

Apteryx is the dental imaging business of Planet DDS, which also makes the Denticon cloud practice management system. Its current product, Apteryx XVWeb, is browser-based cloud imaging software for capturing, viewing, editing, annotating and sending images. Planet DDS states that more than 13,000 dental practices use Apteryx. Planet DDS's support site still lists upgraders for the older XrayVision software, but XVWeb is the product its Apteryx page promotes.
Open architecture is the main pitch. Planet DDS describes Apteryx as device-agnostic and practice-management-agnostic, compatible with a wide range of sensors and practice management systems, and storing images in DICOM format. Images are kept in the cloud, so practices do not need larger servers as files grow, and an offline mode allows capture during internet outages with automatic sync afterwards.
Clinical tools cover custom filters, enhancement, templates, bitewings and measurement. A 3D module adds volume rendering, curved slice and panoramic reconstruction, implant planning and nerve canal tracing. Embedded FDA-cleared AI overlays analyse X-rays in real time, and a secure portal shares images with specialists.

Planmeca Romexis is the dental software platform of Planmeca, the maker of X-ray units, CBCT machines, intraoral scanners and treatment units. Planmeca describes Romexis as an all-in-one platform for capturing, viewing and processing 2D and 3D images and CAD/CAM cases, built for clinics from single-chair practices to hospitals and group practices.
Romexis is modular. The 2D imaging module is included in every bundle, and clinics can add 3D imaging, 3D implantology, cephalometric analysis, CMF surgery planning, CAD/CAM design, orthodontic simulation, smile design and a dental PACS module later. The software is Java-based and runs natively on macOS and Windows.
For 2D work, adaptive pre-processing filters are applied at capture, and built-in AI detects and numbers teeth in intraoral images, corrects orientation and arranges images into study templates. With the Planmeca ProX unit and ProSensor HD, exposure values are recorded automatically. Third-party sensors and PSP scanners connect through TWAIN, and DICOM support lets Romexis act as a device-independent image archive. Planmeca states Romexis integrates directly with more than 100 practice management systems and includes an integration with Second Opinion AI for X-ray findings.

SOTA Cloud is the cloud imaging platform from SOTA Imaging, which also sells its own smart sensor and smart camera. SOTA states that the platform has more than 30,000 users and powers more than 3,000 locations, and it markets to three segments: independent practices, emerging groups and enterprise DSOs with up to 1,000 or more locations.
SOTA frames the product as one connected workflow from capture to claim. At capture, it offers native sensor integrations, AI image enhancement and practice management connectivity, and it flags missed anatomy, poor exposure and technique factor issues. For analysis, SOTA Cloud embeds AI from Pearl, Overjet and VideaHealth so findings appear inside the imaging software, which lets a group keep its chosen AI vendor. For presentation, it includes patient education videos. Follow-up uses AI to automate patient and referral communication, including CBCT sharing, and a claims step checks that images meet payer documentation standards.
The platform runs in the browser, which SOTA presents as a way to provide anywhere access and reduce IT costs. For groups, SOTA emphasises standardised care across providers and locations, quick deployment at acquired practices regardless of their existing equipment, and fleet-wide visibility with security and compliance controls.

Frequently asked questions
What is dental imaging software?
Dental imaging software captures images from intraoral sensors, phosphor plate scanners, cameras and panoramic, cephalometric or CBCT units, stores them against the patient record and provides tools to view, enhance, measure and annotate them. Most products bridge to the practice management system so images open from the patient chart, and many now add AI detection of findings, treatment planning and case sharing with labs and specialists.
How much does dental imaging software cost?
Most vendors quote. Carestream is the exception on this page: its online store lists the CS Imaging 8 licence at $1,299 for up to 99 computers at a time, plus support at $49 per month on a 12-month contract that then continues month-to-month. Cloud platforms such as Apteryx XVWeb, SOTA Cloud and Romexis Image Cloud charge monthly subscriptions that their vendors quote per practice.
Can dental imaging software work with sensors from other manufacturers?
Often, but the depth of support varies. Apteryx, SOTA Cloud and MiPACS state that they integrate devices from many manufacturers, with MiPACS citing more than 200. Romexis and DEXIS Imaging Suite accept third-party sensors through TWAIN, and DEXIS sells a separate module for full third-party capture workflows. Buyers should confirm direct support for each sensor and CBCT model in use.
Is cloud-based dental imaging better than server-based software?
It depends on the practice. Cloud products such as Apteryx XVWeb and SOTA Cloud remove the local server, include offsite backup and make images available across locations, which suits multi-site groups. Server-based products keep images on premises and can run without internet access. Apteryx offers an offline capture mode that syncs later, and Planmeca offers hosted Romexis Image Cloud as a middle option.
Which dental imaging software includes AI?
DTX Studio Clinic includes AI that identifies more than 14 findings, and DEXIS Imaging Suite accesses AI through the DEXassist integration. Apteryx embeds FDA-cleared AI overlays. Romexis integrates Second Opinion and also uses AI for tooth numbering. MiPACS builds in Pearl's Second Opinion, and SOTA Cloud embeds AI from Pearl, Overjet and VideaHealth. AI features are often priced separately.
What happened to Apteryx XrayVision?
XrayVision is an older Apteryx imaging product, and Planet DDS's support site still lists XrayVision upgraders. The Apteryx product page now promotes Apteryx XVWeb, a cloud-based product with offline capture, DICOM storage, a 3D module and embedded AI. Practices still running XrayVision should ask Planet DDS about migration to XVWeb and about image conversion if they are moving to a different vendor.
What should multi-location dental groups look for?
Groups should check how images captured at one site become available at others, whether every acquired practice's sensors are supported, and how imaging is standardised across providers. DEXIS uses DEXsync between office databases, Romexis offers hosted Romexis Image Cloud, and Apteryx, SOTA Cloud and MiPACS are designed for centralised access across many locations. Ask for references from groups of similar size.
