These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.
Coding assessment platforms let employers test programming skill before or during a technical interview. A candidate writes code in a browser editor, the platform grades it against hidden test cases, and reviewers see scores, code playback and integrity signals. Most vendors also sell live coding interviews on the same platform.
The market splits three ways. Dedicated engineering platforms such as HackerRank, CodeSignal, Codility, HackerEarth, CoderPad and Coderbyte focus on developer hiring. TestGorilla includes coding challenges inside a broader pre-employment testing library. iMocha and Mercer | Mettl sell coding tests as part of large enterprise skills assessment suites.
The biggest change in 2026 is how platforms treat AI. Some test whether a candidate can code without it, others record how a candidate uses it, and several do both.
Every entry was checked against the vendor’s own pages in September 2026. Six publish prices, one publishes plan contents without readable prices, and two quote. Buyers comparing coding assessment platforms may also review software development outsourcing companies and custom software development companies.
Vendor details and trade-offs
HackerRank sells technical hiring software built around two core products. Screen runs take-home assessments before an interview, and Interview runs live coding sessions. Engage supports employer branding events for developers, SkillUp covers internal upskilling, and Chakra pre-screens candidates with AI interviews.
The Screen product page frames assessment around how developers now work with AI. HackerRank lists three areas it can test: fundamentals without AI, through real-world projects that ask candidates to review code and debug issues; the ability to work with AI, through a built-in AI interviewer; and knowledge of AI concepts such as prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation and vector databases.
Teams that do not want to write questions can pick a role-based Certified Assessment or upload a job description and let the system generate a test. HackerRank also lists AI-powered plagiarism detection and more than 40 integrations.
HackerRank's help pages describe three plans. Starter includes one user and 120 attempts a year. Pro adds unlimited users, 300 attempts a year, AI features and ATS integrations. Enterprise is custom and is the only plan that includes Engage and SkillUp. The published subscription terms state that monthly plans renew each month and annual plans renew each year until cancelled.

Frequently asked questions
What is a coding assessment platform?
A coding assessment platform lets employers test a candidate's programming skill in a browser-based coding environment. Candidates solve tasks that the platform grades automatically against test cases, and reviewers see scores, code playback and integrity signals. Most platforms also run live coding interviews, and several now test how candidates work with AI tools.
How much do coding assessment platforms cost?
Published entry prices checked in September 2026: CoderPad Starter USD 80 a month and CodeSignal Build USD 79 a month, both billed annually; HackerEarth Growth USD 99 a month; Codility Starter USD 1,200 a year; Coderbyte Pro USD 1,799 a year with unlimited candidates. TestGorilla has a free plan, but custom coding challenges start on Plus at USD 4,800 a year. iMocha and Mercer | Mettl quote.
Is there a free coding assessment platform?
TestGorilla has a free plan, but it includes only five general skills tests and no custom coding challenges. CoderPad offers a two-week free trial, and Coderbyte offers a free trial of its plans. The other platforms on this page sell paid plans or quote; free developer practice sites are not built for employer screening.
How do coding assessment platforms prevent cheating?
Common controls include plagiarism detection, proctoring with webcam snapshots or video, ID verification and code playback. Codility removes leaked tasks from its library and sells a desktop app that detects unauthorised applications. CodeSignal lists a Suspicion Score. Mercer | Mettl combines MOSS with its own similarity checks. Stronger proctoring usually sits on higher plans.
Can candidates use AI during a coding assessment?
It depends on the platform and the employer's settings. CoderPad places an LLM in every pad and records prompts. HackerRank offers an AI interviewer that tests the ability to work with AI. Codility includes an agentic AI copilot with reviewable activity. Employers that want to test coding without AI can rely on proctoring and integrity controls instead.
What is the difference between a coding assessment and a live coding interview?
A coding assessment is usually a timed, auto-graded test the candidate takes alone before any interview. A live coding interview runs in a shared editor with an interviewer watching and talking with the candidate. HackerRank, Codility, HackerEarth, CoderPad and Coderbyte sell both, and several count each as one credit.
Which coding assessment platforms integrate with an ATS?
Codility lists Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workday and SAP on its Custom plan. CodeSignal includes basic ATS integrations on Grow and enterprise integrations on Pro. HackerEarth lists ATS integrations from Scale, TestGorilla on Plus, and HackerRank on Pro. Coderbyte sells API, ATS and MCP integrations as a USD 1,499 annual add-on.
How were these coding assessment platforms selected?
The page includes platforms named in buyer searches for coding assessment platforms that document employer coding tests, each with a live product page and a pricing or documentation page checked in September 2026. Order follows source readiness and content sequence, not quality. No product was tested hands-on. Vendors not listed can contact [email protected].
