Best Business Process Management Software (2026): Top 10 Compared
Business process management (BPM) software models a process, runs it on an engine that assigns work to people, systems and now AI agents, and measures how each case moves. The ten suites below split into three groups. Appian, Pega, IBM Business Automation Workflow and Nintex are enterprise low-code suites that bundle process modeling, case management, RPA and AI under one licence. Camunda and Flowable are standards-based orchestration engines built on BPMN, CMMN and DMN, aimed at development teams that embed process logic in their own systems. Bizagi, Creatio, Decisions and Bonita offer process automation with unusual licensing models: consumption-based, per user with a minimum, unlimited users, or a free open-source edition.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.
Business process management (BPM) software models how work moves through an organisation and then runs that model. A process engine assigns tasks to people, calls systems, applies business rules and, in the newest releases, hands steps to AI agents within set limits. Process records support audits and process mining. Buyers are typically IT and operations leaders replacing a legacy workflow engine, building regulated case handling such as claims, onboarding or disputes, or standardising processes that cross several core systems.
The comparison below covers ten suites. Each vendor’s own pricing, product or trial page was read on 11 October 2026. Only Creatio publishes per-user prices, and the other nine sell production licences through sales, so the entries record each licence metric, free edition and trial instead. Two changes affect buyers who are already customers: ProcessMaker merged into Decisions in November 2025, and Bonitasoft now trades as Ofelia.

Frequently asked questions
What is business process management software?
Business process management (BPM) software lets an organisation model a process, usually in the BPMN notation, run it on an engine that assigns tasks to people, systems and AI agents, and measure each case against targets. Modern suites add case management for unstructured work, business rules, RPA, document processing and process mining. Vendors increasingly describe the category as business orchestration and automation.
How is BPM software different from workflow automation tools such as Zapier?
Workflow automation tools connect SaaS applications with triggers and actions, usually for one team. BPM suites run long-lived processes and cases with human tasks, approvals, SLAs, audit trails and rules, often across core systems such as SAP, mainframes or policy platforms. They are licensed and implemented at programme level and usually involve IT. Zapier and n8n are covered on a separate page.
How much does BPM software cost?
Most suites on this page publish no prices. Creatio is the exception: $40 per user per month on Growth and $75 on Enterprise, with a $10,000 yearly minimum and a standard three-year term. Appian prices per user, per month, per app without published figures. Bizagi uses consumption-based pricing with unlimited users, and Decisions includes unlimited users on every quoted plan.
Are there free or open-source BPM options?
Yes. Flowable's BPMN, CMMN and DMN engines are Apache 2.0 open source. Bonita Free is an open-source edition with no time limit, capped at 150 process instances a month. Camunda Self-Managed is free for development and non-production use. Appian and Pega offer free Community Editions for building and learning, and Bizagi Modeler is a free process modeling tool.
What are BPMN, CMMN and DMN?
They are open standards maintained by the Object Management Group. BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) describes structured processes, CMMN (Case Management Model and Notation) describes flexible cases where the next step depends on events, and DMN (Decision Model and Notation) describes business rules and decision tables. Camunda and Flowable execute these models directly, which keeps them portable between tools.
Can BPM platforms orchestrate AI agents?
Each vendor on this page now markets agent orchestration. Examples include Appian's AI agents on Advanced and Premium, Pega Blueprint, Camunda's agentic orchestration, IBM's MCP integration with watsonx Orchestrate, Claude and Copilot, Decisions' Agent Builder with MCP endpoints, Flowable's runtime policy controls for agents and Bonita's connectors to OpenAI, Mistral and Anthropic.
Have any BPM vendors merged or rebranded recently?
Yes. Decisions and ProcessMaker announced their merger on 10 November 2025, and processmaker.com now redirects to decisions.com, so ProcessMaker is covered under the Decisions entry. Bonitasoft now trades as Ofelia, and bonitasoft.com redirects to ofelia.com, while the open-source platform keeps the Bonita name.
How was this comparison compiled?
