Best AI Voice Generators (2026): Top 9 Compared

Updated September 2026By StatWharf Editorial9 vendorsMethodology

AI voice generators turn text into synthetic speech for voiceover, narration, dubbing and training content. The nine products differ by workflow. ElevenLabs Studio combines voiceover, dubbing, music and effects in one credit balance, and Speechify Studio bills a fixed annual price. Murf Studio and WellSaid Labs suit learning and training teams, and Descript edits audio as text for podcast and video teams. These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

An AI voice generator turns a written script into spoken audio inside a browser editor. Creators and content teams use one to narrate videos and courses, record audiobooks and podcasts, voice adverts and characters, dub finished footage into other languages, and produce internal training material without booking a studio or a voice actor. The products differ in voice library size, how much control they give over delivery, whether cloning is included, what licence the output carries, and how usage is metered.

The nine products compared here split into three groups. ElevenLabs Studio, Speechify Studio, Murf Studio, WellSaid Labs, Fish Audio, Listnr and Typecast are voice-first studios. Descript is a text-based video and podcast editor whose AI Speech feature places it in this category. Altered is a voice morphing platform built around an existing performance rather than a typed script. All pricing notes were checked in September 2026. Entries with dated source checks appear first; that records research readiness, not product quality or a ranking.

This page covers studio products for people. Speech synthesis called from code is compared on the text to speech APIs page, and systems that hold whole conversations are compared on the AI voice agent platforms page. Buyers comparing AI voice generators may also review AI video generators.

Vendor details and trade-offs

ElevenLabs Studio

specialistelevenlabs.io ↗
Consider forCreators who want voiceover, dubbing, music and sound effects inside one project workspace rather than a single-purpose voice tool
Pricing notesElevenCreative plans: Free US$0 with 10,000 credits, Starter US$6, Creator US$22 (first month US$11), Pro US$99, Scale US$299 and Business US$990 per month; Enterprise custom (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateOne credit balance covers text to speech, dubbing, music, sound effects and image or video generation in the same Studio project

ElevenLabs splits its products into three lines: ElevenCreative for content production, ElevenAgents for conversational agents and ElevenAPI for developers. This entry covers Studio, the project editor inside ElevenCreative. The separate speech synthesis API is compared on the text to speech APIs page.

The documentation describes Studio as a project workspace rather than a single generation box. A project starts from a quick script, an upload or a blank timeline, and the same editor reaches faceless video, captions, translation, automatic music and speech generation. Audiobooks, Flows and Templates are listed as separate product guides under the same Studio section.

Pricing is published per plan and expressed in credits. Free includes 10,000 credits and 3 Studio projects. Starter at US$6 adds a commercial licence, instant voice cloning, 20 Studio projects and Dubbing Studio. Creator at US$22 includes 121,000 credits and professional voice cloning, Pro at US$99 includes 600,000, Scale at US$299 includes 1.8 million with 3 seats and Business at US$990 includes 6 million with 10 seats. The plan table also states approximate included text to speech minutes and the cost of extra minutes, from about US$0.36 on Free to about US$0.17 on Pro and above.

ElevenLabs suits a creator whose voiceover work sits alongside dubbing, music and video in the same project.

Potential strengths

  • Every ElevenCreative tier publishes both its monthly price and its included credits, from 10,000 on Free to 6 million on Business
  • Commercial licence, instant voice cloning and Dubbing Studio start at Starter, US$6 per month
  • Pro and above add 192 kbps audio and 44.1 kHz PCM output through Studio and the API

Trade-offs

  • Credits are shared across products, so music, image or video generation spends the same balance as voiceover
  • Professional voice cloning requires Creator or above, and the free tier carries no commercial licence

Speechify Studio

specialistspeechify.com ↗
Consider forCreators who want voiceover, dubbing and a voice changer at a fixed annual price rather than a monthly credit subscription
Pricing notesFree US$0 with 600 Studio credits; Studio Starter US$100 per year with 86,400 credits; Studio Creator US$300 per year with 345,600 credits (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateStudio is sold and billed as a separate subscription from the Speechify reading app, and the vendor states the split in its own pricing FAQ

Speechify sells three products under one brand. The Text to Speech Reader is the consumer listening app, the API is for developers, and Studio is the creator tool. This entry covers Studio only. The vendor's pricing FAQ states directly that Studio and the Reader are different subscriptions.

Studio is described as a voice and video suite: voice cloning in the browser, voiceover for narration and explainers, an AI video studio, and one-click dubbing that matches the speaker's voice, intonation and speed. The product page states that hundreds of AI voices and accents are available and that no installation is required.

Pricing is published in three tiers. The free plan costs nothing and includes 600 Studio credits, access to 1,000 or more voices, Voiceover Studio, Dubbing Studio and the voice changer, but excludes voice cloning and commercial usage rights. Studio Starter is US$100 per year with 86,400 credits and adds voice cloning, stock music, video, images and sound effects, and commercial usage rights. Studio Creator is US$300 per year with 345,600 credits and everything in Starter.

Speechify Studio fits a creator who prefers one annual charge and wants dubbing and a voice changer in the same place as voiceover.

Potential strengths

  • Both paid tiers are quoted as an annual price with a stated credit allowance, so the yearly cost is fixed and visible
  • Voice cloning, stock music, video, images and sound effects, and commercial usage rights all start at the US$100 Starter tier
  • The free plan still reaches 1,000 or more voices, Voiceover Studio, Dubbing Studio and the voice changer

Trade-offs

  • The free plan excludes voice cloning and commercial usage rights
  • Allowances are quoted in Studio credits rather than minutes, so the cost per finished minute has to be worked out
  • Studio, the Text to Speech Reader and the Speechify API are three separate subscriptions

Murf Studio

mid-marketmurf.ai ↗
Consider forLearning and enablement teams producing corporate voiceover inside PowerPoint, Google Slides and Canva workflows
Pricing notesStudio plans: Free US$0 with 10 minutes of voice generation; Creator US$19 per month (US$228 billed annually); Business US$66 per month (US$792 billed annually); Enterprise custom (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateVoice generation is metered in hours per year rather than credits, at 24 hours on Creator and 96 hours on Business

Murf sells separate Studio, Dub and API products. This entry covers Studio, the browser voiceover editor. The Murf speech synthesis API is compared on the text to speech APIs page.

The product pages describe a script editor with a voice library of 200 or more voices across 30 or more languages and accents, multi-native voices, pronunciation editing, and a set of delivery controls named Emphasis, Variability and Say It My Way. Integrations are published for Canva, PowerPoint, Google Slides, Adobe Captivate and a Windows reader application.

Pricing is published in four tiers. Free includes 10 projects, 10 minutes of voice generation, one editor and no commercial rights. Creator is US$19 per month or US$228 billed annually and includes 100 projects, 24 hours of voice generation per year, unlimited downloads, commercial rights and the Canva integration. Business is US$66 per month or US$792 billed annually and includes 500 projects, 96 hours of voice generation per year, 48 hours of transcription, a business licence, PowerPoint and Google Slides plugins and the advanced voice controls. Enterprise adds unlimited generation, five or more editor seats, AI translation, SSO and a master service agreement.

Murf fits a training or marketing team that produces slide-based voiceover at a predictable annual volume.

Potential strengths

  • All plans reach the same library of 200 or more voices across 30 or more languages and accents
  • Creator includes commercial rights, unlimited downloads and the Canva integration at US$19 per month
  • Business adds PowerPoint and Google Slides plugins, audio to text and a business licence

Trade-offs

  • Creator and Business each include one editor seat, so a second editor needs Enterprise
  • The Emphasis, Variability and Say It My Way voice controls are Business features
  • Custom voice clones and full broadcasting rights are Enterprise add-ons

Descript

mid-marketdescript.com ↗
Consider forPodcast and video teams who edit audio as text and want generated speech to replace a recorded line in the same timeline
Pricing notesFree tier with 60 media minutes; Hobbyist US$16, Creator US$24 and Business US$50 per person per month billed annually (US$24, US$35 and US$65 monthly); Enterprise custom (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateAI Speech sits inside a text-based editor, so a generated line is typed into the transcript where the recorded line used to be

Descript is a video and podcast editor rather than a dedicated voice tool, and its AI Speech feature is what places it in this category. The feature list describes voice cloning and stock AI voices alongside transcription, filler-word removal, Studio Sound, captions, translation and an AI assistant named Underlord.

The editing model is the reason teams reach for it. Audio and video are edited by editing the transcript, so a synthesised line can be typed into the script and dropped into the timeline in place of a recorded one. Regenerate Speech and Video Regenerate extend the same idea to repairing existing audio and footage.

Pricing is published per person. The free tier includes 60 media minutes a month. Hobbyist is US$16 per person per month billed annually, or US$24 monthly, with 10 media hours and 400 AI credits. Creator is US$24 annually or US$35 monthly, with 30 media hours, 800 AI credits and 4K export. Business is US$50 annually or US$65 monthly, with 40 media hours, 1,500 AI credits, Brand Studio, dubbing in 30 or more languages and priority support. Enterprise adds SOC 2 Type II, SSO, SCIM and custom terms.

Descript fits a team whose voice generation is one step inside a larger edit.

Potential strengths

  • Each tier publishes both its media hours and its AI credits, at 10 hours and 400 credits on Hobbyist up to 40 hours and 1,500 credits on Business
  • Voice cloning and video regenerate are included from the lowest paid tier
  • Transcription covers 25 languages on every plan, including the free one

Trade-offs

  • Voice generation draws on the same AI credit pool as every other AI tool in the editor
  • Watermark-free export requires a paid plan
  • Team plans are billed per person, so a three-person podcast on Creator pays three times

WellSaid Labs

mid-marketwellsaidlabs.com ↗
Consider forCorporate training and enablement teams that iterate through many takes before exporting a finished voiceover
Pricing notesFree trial with 3 download minutes per month; Starter US$10 and Pro US$33 per month billed annually (US$19 and US$49 monthly); Business US$160 per user per month billed annually; Enterprise custom (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateGeneration is unlimited on paid plans and only downloaded audio consumes the allowance, so revisions before export cost nothing

WellSaid Labs sells a browser voice studio aimed at business content rather than entertainment. The product menu lists Studio for scripts, a voice library, collaboration, security and an API, and the customer stories describe internal enablement and training use.

The metering model is the distinguishing feature. On every paid plan, generation and playback are unlimited and the plan allowance counts only the minutes of finished audio a user downloads. Extra minutes are sold inside Studio, so a project that runs long does not force a plan change.

Pricing is published for individuals and teams. The trial is free with 3 download minutes a month, curated voices, tone, pitch and emotional controls, and no commercial rights. Starter is US$10 per month billed annually at US$120, or US$19 monthly, with 240 downloaded minutes a year, 10 projects, all English voices, full commercial rights, caption files and 24 kHz audio. Pro is US$33 billed annually at US$396, or US$49 monthly, with 2,160 minutes a year, unlimited projects, Adobe Express and up to 48 kHz. Business is US$160 per user per month billed annually at US$1,920, with 2,880 minutes per user, up to five seats, a team workspace and Premiere Pro. Enterprise adds all languages, translation, up to 96 kHz, SSO and security controls.

WellSaid fits a team whose drafts outnumber its exports.

Potential strengths

  • Allowances are stated in downloaded minutes, at 240 minutes a year on Starter, 2,160 on Pro and 2,880 per user on Business
  • Extra minutes can be purchased inside Studio without moving to a higher plan
  • Adobe Express is included on Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro on Business

Trade-offs

  • Paid self-serve plans list English voices only; all languages and translation are Enterprise features
  • The Business plan is capped at five purchasable seats
  • The free trial grants 3 download minutes a month and no commercial rights

Fish Audio

specialistfish.audio ↗
Consider forCreators producing long-form narration or character work who want emotional direction written inline in the script
Pricing notesFree US$0 with 8,000 credits a month; Plus US$11, Pro US$75 and Max US$749 per month billed annually (US$15, US$100 and US$999 monthly); Enterprise custom (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateDelivery is directed with inline tags such as laughing, sighing or long pause, written into the script rather than set in a control panel

Fish Audio sells a voice generation platform with a web studio, a public voice library and a developer API. The product pages describe video voiceovers, audiobook narration, character voices and conversational chatbots as the intended uses, and state that audiobook output is intended to meet ACX and Audible specifications.

Emotional control is the feature the vendor leads with. The site lists inline tags including laughing, chuckling, clearing the throat, sobbing, sighing, panting, groaning, crowd laughter and pauses of two lengths, written directly into the text. The voice library is stated at more than two million community voices, and voice cloning and Voice Design are offered on paid tiers.

Pricing is published per month with annual billing offered at three months off. The free tier includes 8,000 credits, about seven minutes of generation, 500 characters per generation, three public voice slots and commercial use. Plus is US$11 billed annually, or US$15 monthly, with 250,000 credits, about 200 minutes, 15,000 characters per generation and one professional voice slot. Pro is US$75 billed annually, or US$100 monthly, with two million credits, about 1,620 minutes, three team seats and five professional voice slots. Max is US$749 billed annually with 25 million credits and ten seats. Enterprise adds zero data retention, on-premises deployment and SOC 2 compliance.

Fish Audio fits narration work that needs performance direction inside the script.

Potential strengths

  • Commercial use is allowed on the free tier, which few studios in this comparison offer
  • Both the credit allowance and the per-generation character limit are published per tier, from 500 characters on Free to 30,000 on Pro
  • Pro includes three team seats and Max ten, so collaboration does not require an enterprise quote

Trade-offs

  • Allowances are expressed in credits and approximate minutes rather than a firm minute count
  • The free tier is capped at about seven minutes of generation a month
  • Zero data retention, on-premises deployment and SOC 2 documentation are Enterprise-only

Listnr

smblistnr.ai ↗
Consider forSolo producers and small agencies publishing podcasts and embedded audio alongside their voiceover work
Pricing notesFree US$0 with 1,000 starting credits; Individual US$19, Solo US$39 and Agency US$99 per month (US$190, US$390 and US$990 billed annually); custom pricing above that (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateA podcast studio and unlimited audio embeds ship with the same subscription as text to speech, so published audio does not need a second tool

Listnr bundles text to speech, translation, voice cloning, a text to speech API and a podcast studio on one subscription. The product menu lists video voiceovers, audiobook narration, podcasts and multilingual content as the intended uses.

The publishing side is what separates it from a pure voice generator. The same account creates and publishes audio stories and provides unlimited audio embeds, which suits a site owner who wants a spoken version of written content without a second vendor.

Pricing is published in four tiers plus a custom option. The free plan costs nothing, includes 1,000 credits to start, previews of 1,000 or more voices and 142 or more languages, and requires no credit card. Individual is US$19 per month or US$190 billed annually and includes 20,000 credits a month, about two hours of generation, unlimited downloads and exports, 50 GB of storage, 50 videos a month and commercial rights. Solo is US$39 per month or US$390 annually with 50,000 credits, about five hours, 100 GB and 150 videos. Agency is US$99 per month or US$990 annually with 250,000 credits, about 25 hours, 250 GB and 250 videos. Custom plans add seat-based licences, dedicated API throughput, SSO and a service agreement.

Listnr fits a producer whose audio is published as well as generated.

Potential strengths

  • Every paid tier states both a credit allowance and its approximate hours of generation, at roughly 2, 5 and 25 hours
  • Commercial rights, unlimited downloads and access to the full voice library are included on all paid plans
  • The voice library is stated at 1,000 or more voices across 142 or more languages and accents

Trade-offs

  • Storage and monthly video counts are capped per tier, at 50 GB and 50 videos on Individual
  • Allowances are expressed in credits, so cost per finished minute depends on the voice and settings used
  • Seat-based licences, dedicated API throughput and SSO require a custom quote

Altered

specialistaltered.ai ↗
Consider forFilm, game and media production teams that need performance-driven voice morphing with licence terms stated in the plan
Pricing notesFree US$0 with 3 minutes a month under an attribution licence; Creator US$30 and Professional US$90 per month billed annually, excluding tax; Enterprise on request (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateEach tier is defined by the licence attached to the output: attribution, a creator licence capped at US$100,000 of revenue, or a full commercial licence

Altered sells two products: RealTime Pro, a voice changer for live calls, and Altered Studio, a voice content creation platform. This entry covers Altered Studio.

The feature list centres on voice morphing rather than plain synthesis. The platform records or imports a spoken performance and maps it onto another voice, with accent morphing, speaking-style morphing and, on the top tier, performance morphing. Premium text to speech, voice cloning, rapid voice cloning, an AI voice cleaner and a voice editor sit alongside it.

Pricing is unusual because the tier names the licence. Free costs nothing, includes 3 minutes of voice morphing a month, 10,000 AI tokens and local voice cloning, and carries an attribution licence that bars commercial use and requires a credit to the vendor's website. Creator is US$30 per month billed annually, excluding tax, with 60 minutes of morphing, 325,000 tokens, accent and speaking-style morphing, and a creator licence limited to companies of up to five employees below US$100,000 of revenue or funding. Professional is US$90 per month billed annually with 180 minutes, one million tokens, unlimited local morphing, 48 kHz output and a perpetual commercial licence. Enterprise adds unlimited morphing, custom voice models, API access and multiple seats.

Altered fits production work where an actor's performance drives the result and the licence has to be explicit.

Potential strengths

  • Voice morphing minutes and AI tokens are published per tier, at 60 minutes and 325,000 tokens on Creator and 180 minutes and one million tokens on Professional
  • All plans include 20 professional voices, more than 800 common voices, text to speech, voice cloning and rapid voice cloning
  • Professional adds 48 kHz output, flexible and performance voice morphing, and unlimited local morphing

Trade-offs

  • Free output requires crediting the vendor and may not be used commercially
  • The creator licence applies only to companies of up to five employees with revenue or funding under US$100,000 in the last 12 months
  • API access, custom voice models and multi-seat use are Enterprise features

Typecast

smbtypecast.ai ↗
Consider forCreators producing character or emotional narration who want fine control over delivery at a low monthly entry price
Pricing notesFree US$0 with 3,000 lifetime download credits; Basic US$5, Plus US$19, Pro US$29 and Business US$69 per month (US$54, US$204, US$312 and US$744 billed yearly); Enterprise on request (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateGeneration and playback are unlimited on every plan, including the free one, and credits are spent only when audio is downloaded

Typecast sells a Studio plan family for people producing voice on the web and a separate API plan family for developers. This entry covers Studio.

The product is built around expressive delivery. The text to speech page demonstrates emotional variants of the same line, a Smart Emotion control that adjusts delivery in one click, advanced intonation controls, multilingual speech from a cloned voice, and voice libraries organised by use, including advertising, audiobook, character and animation voices.

The metering model matters as much as the price. Voice generation and playback are unlimited on every plan and credits are consumed only on download. Free includes 3,000 lifetime credits, about five minutes, with attribution required and 720p video export. Basic is US$5 per month, or US$54 yearly, with 30,000 credits a month, about 35 minutes, access to all voices, 44.1 kHz audio, one instant cloning slot, 1080p export, 5 GB of storage, a commercial licence and watermark-free video. Plus is US$19, or US$204 yearly, with 40,000 credits, speed control, one professional cloning slot, 4K export and 30 GB. Pro is US$29, or US$312 yearly, with 75,000 credits, emotion and intonation controls, two cloning slots and 50 GB. Business is US$69, or US$744 yearly, with 200,000 credits, ten cloning slots, 100 GB and additional credit purchases.

Typecast fits a creator who auditions many readings before exporting one.

Potential strengths

  • At US$5 a month, Basic is the lowest published paid entry point among the studios compared here
  • Download credits are translated into approximate minutes on the pricing page, from about 35 minutes on Basic to about 250 on Business
  • Commercial licence, 44.1 kHz audio and watermark-free video export start at the Basic tier

Trade-offs

  • Content downloaded on the free plan requires attribution
  • Emotion controls and advanced intonation require the Pro tier
  • Voice cloning slots are limited, at one on Basic and Plus, two on Pro and ten on Business

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI voice generator?

It is an application that turns a written script into spoken audio using synthetic voices. The tools on this page are studio products aimed at creators and content teams: they provide a script editor, a voice library, delivery controls, voice cloning and an export step. A developer who wants to call speech synthesis from code is served by a text to speech API instead.

How does an AI voice generator differ from a text to speech API?

A voice generator is an editor a person works in; an API is an endpoint an application calls. Several vendors sell both, and the SKUs are priced differently. ElevenLabs sells ElevenCreative for Studio work and ElevenAPI for developers, and Murf sells Studio and an API separately. This page compares studio products only. The API side is compared on the text to speech APIs page.

How are AI voice generators priced?

Three models appear in this comparison. Some vendors meter credits, such as ElevenLabs, Speechify Studio, Listnr, Fish Audio and Typecast. Some meter time, such as Murf in hours of generation per year and WellSaid Labs in downloaded minutes. Descript meters media hours and AI credits together. Published paid entry prices in September 2026 ranged from US$5 to US$30 a month.

Which AI voice generators allow commercial use on a free plan?

Among the plans checked in September 2026, Fish Audio states commercial use on its free tier. Typecast allows free downloads but requires attribution, and Altered's free tier carries an attribution licence that bars commercial use. ElevenLabs, Speechify Studio, Murf and WellSaid Labs all place a commercial licence behind their lowest paid tier. Licence terms change, so the current page should be read before publishing.

Do these tools charge for drafts as well as final audio?

It depends on the metering model. WellSaid Labs states that generation and playback are unlimited on paid plans and that only downloaded minutes count against the allowance. Typecast states the same for its Studio plans. Credit-metered tools generally charge at generation, so revisions consume the allowance. A team that iterates heavily should compare the two models before choosing.

Which of these products include voice cloning?

All nine list some form of voice cloning. The tier matters: ElevenLabs includes instant cloning from Starter and professional cloning from Creator, Typecast provides one instant slot on Basic and ten on Business, and Speechify Studio excludes cloning from its free plan. Murf reserves custom voice clones for Enterprise as an add-on.

Can an AI voice generator dub an existing video?

Several can. ElevenLabs lists Dubbing Studio from the Starter tier, Speechify Studio includes one-click dubbing that matches the speaker's voice and speed, Descript lists translation and dubbing in 30 or more languages on its Business tier, and Murf sells a separate Dub product alongside Studio. Language coverage and lip-sync behaviour differ, so a sample file is the quickest way to compare.

How should a team choose between these tools?

Start from the surrounding workflow rather than the voice. A team editing podcasts is served by an editor such as Descript; a team producing slide-based training is served by Murf or WellSaid Labs; a team publishing audio is served by Listnr. Then generate the same script on two shortlisted tools, download the result, and model monthly cost at real volume. This page records public documentation and pricing checks, not hands-on testing or vendor confirmation.
