Best User Story Mapping Software (2026): Top 10 Compared

Updated September 2026By StatWharf Editorial10 vendorsMethodology

User story mapping software lays a product backlog out along the user's journey: activities across the top, steps beneath them, stories below, and horizontal slices that mark each release. The ten products below fall into three groups. CardBoard, StoriesOnBoard, Avion and FeatureMap are standalone story mapping tools that sync with a backlog tool. Easy Agile TeamRhythm, ProductGo, Realigned's Story Maps and Bauer's Agile User Story Map PRO run inside Jira and treat Jira issues as the cards. Miro and Mural are general whiteboards that offer story map templates. All ten publish a price or a free tier.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

User story mapping software lays a backlog out as the user experiences the product. Activities run across the top, the stories that deliver each step sit beneath, and horizontal slices mark what ships in each release. The layout helps teams spot missing work and agree the smallest useful release.

The ten products compared here take three approaches. CardBoard, StoriesOnBoard, Avion and FeatureMap are standalone story mapping tools that sync with a tracker. Easy Agile TeamRhythm, ProductGo, Realigned’s Story Maps and Bauer’s Agile User Story Map PRO run inside Jira and use Jira issues as the cards. Miro and Mural are general whiteboards with story map templates.

Every entry was checked against the vendor’s own pages or its Atlassian Marketplace listing in September 2026. All ten publish a price or a free tier. Buyers comparing user story mapping software may also review sprint planning software and agile project management tools.

Vendor details and trade-offs

CardBoard

smbcardboardit.com ↗
Consider forProduct managers, business analysts and delivery teams who want a whiteboard built around story maps, with release slices and user journeys, that syncs to their backlog tool, as CardBoard documents
Pricing notesStarter $9 a month or $99 a year for 1 collaborator. Team $29 a month or $299 a year with 3 collaborators, $12 a month per additional collaborator. Business $99 a month or $998 a year with 10 collaborators, $15 a month per additional collaborator. Enterprise includes 30 collaborators and is quoted. 14-day free trial (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateCards snap to a grid, dividers mark release slices and boards link to each other with live previews to avoid one oversized map

CardBoard is an online whiteboard designed around user story mapping. The company states that it was created by the late David Hussman with Jeff Patton, who popularised the story mapping technique, and describes itself as the original story mapping tool. Those are the vendor's own statements.

Cards snap to an underlying grid, dividers organise release slices, and a journeys feature lets a team explore different user paths on the same map. To stop a single map growing unmanageable, boards can link to other boards and show a live preview of the linked cards. A template library covers other product discovery frameworks.

The integration layer turns a flat backlog into a map and keeps both sides current. CardBoard documents bidirectional updates with Azure DevOps, Jira, Confluence, Trello and Pivotal Tracker, with card details synced to backlog items. The pricing matrix places tracker integrations on Business and Enterprise, board permissions and admin insights on Business and above, and REST API, SAML SSO and phone support on Enterprise.

Potential strengths

  • Two-way updates with Jira, Azure DevOps, Trello and Pivotal Tracker on Business and Enterprise
  • Guest links, voting sessions and user journeys included from the Team plan

Trade-offs

  • Tracker integrations are not included on Starter or Team
  • SAML single sign-on and REST API are limited to Enterprise

StoriesOnBoard

smbstoriesonboard.com ↗
Consider forAgile product teams that want story maps as a collaborative backlog, with AI help writing stories and acceptance criteria and two-way sync to their tracker, as StoriesOnBoard documents
Pricing notesStory Mapping Tool plans billed annually: Basic $9, Standard $12 and Pro $15 per user per month, with up to 20% saved on annual billing and unlimited free guests. A separate Product Management Platform adds roadmaps and idea management: Personal $16 a month, Plus $29 and Premium $55 per user per month. 14-day free trial (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateEvery plan includes a monthly AI token allowance for generating story maps, personas, user stories, acceptance criteria and release notes

StoriesOnBoard presents story maps as a visual, real-time backlog that non-technical stakeholders can follow. A map captures user goals, journeys and the stories beneath them, and release management, personas, assignees, a Kanban board and status reports sit around it.

AI is built into every plan through a monthly token allowance: 50,000 on Basic, 100,000 on Standard and 150,000 on Pro. The documented AI functions create a story map, write personas, brainstorm backlog items, write user stories, collect acceptance criteria, and draft release summaries and announcements.

The story mapping plans scale by products and security. Basic covers one product with unlimited maps and cards. Standard allows ten products and adds custom workflows, Excel import and export, and two-way integrations. Pro adds unlimited products, SAML SSO, IP-based access control and audit logging. A separate product management platform adds roadmaps, prioritisation scoring and idea portals. The company states its infrastructure is ISO 27001 and SOC 2 compliant.

Potential strengths

  • Two-way integrations with Jira Cloud and Server, Azure DevOps, Trello, GitHub and Pivotal Tracker from Standard
  • Unlimited guests at no charge on every story mapping plan

Trade-offs

  • Basic is limited to one product and has no tracker integration
  • SSO and IP-based access control require the Pro plan

Avion

specialistavion.io ↗
Consider forProduct teams that want release plans framed by user journeys and personas, shared with any number of stakeholders at a flat price, as Avion documents
Pricing notesStarter $83 a month paid yearly or $99 paid monthly, 2 story maps. Business $166 a month paid yearly or $199 monthly, 5 story maps and tracker integrations. Enterprise is custom priced. A roadmaps add-on costs $83 a month yearly or $99 monthly. All plans include unlimited users; yearly payment gives two months free (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateDependencies are drawn directly on the story map so blockers show up during release planning

Avion is a dedicated story mapping tool that puts user journeys and personas at the top of the planning model. Features and releases are planned beneath those journeys, and the result doubles as a roadmap that stakeholders outside the delivery team can read.

Stories carry labels, attachments, story points, comments and tags, and can link to live design files in Figma, Adobe XD and Framer. Business adds visual dependencies, custom workflows, PDF export and password-protected share links. Notifications go to Slack on every plan.

Pricing is flat rather than per seat. Starter allows two story maps and Business five, while Enterprise sets a custom quota and adds multiple projects, SSO, Excel and CSV export, dedicated infrastructure and a choice of server region. Avion's FAQ recommends starting with one map and splitting it as it becomes hard to manage. A separate roadmaps add-on provides timeline views across releases and story maps.

Potential strengths

  • Users are unlimited on every plan, so stakeholders add no cost
  • Business connects to Jira Cloud, Azure DevOps, GitHub and Linear

Trade-offs

  • Plans cap the number of story maps, at 2 on Starter and 5 on Business
  • SSO, multiple projects and Jira Server need Enterprise

FeatureMap

specialistfeaturemap.co ↗
Consider forOrganisations coordinating several teams or clients that want a straightforward story mapping tool hosted in France at one flat price, as FeatureMap documents
Pricing notesOne plan at €99 a month excluding VAT, with unlimited users, unlimited backlogs and maps, isolated workspaces and 1 GB of storage per workspace. Non-profit associations can receive access free under the Synergy 1-1-1 programme (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateHosted in France and positioned for both product teams and compliance teams that need traceability

FeatureMap is a story mapping tool first built in 2009 by Tristan Thévenin and later Julien Patte, drawing on Jeff Patton's work. Its founders announced its closure for 31 March 2024. The product was then taken over by BigMentor and put back on sale under a fixed-price model, which the site explains in its own history section.

The relaunched product addresses two audiences. Product teams use it to prioritise a backlog and share a vision on a map. Compliance and governance teams use a separate space aimed at traceability and documentation. Each workspace is isolated, attachments are unlimited within 1 GB of storage, and hosting is in France, which the vendor presents as a sovereignty and compliance advantage.

The single plan costs €99 a month excluding VAT with unlimited users. Projects sync with Jira, and an open API plus Zapier and Make connectors support other automation. Solo users are invited to contact the company for an arrangement.

Potential strengths

  • Unlimited users, backlogs and maps on the single plan
  • Syncs with Jira and exposes an open API with Zapier and Make connectors

Trade-offs

  • Website is in French only
  • The product closed in March 2024 and was relaunched under a new owner, so its track record since relaunch is short

Easy Agile TeamRhythm

mid-marketeasyagile.com ↗
Consider forScrum and Kanban teams working in Jira that want the story map alongside estimation, dependency views and retrospectives in the same app, as Easy Agile documents for TeamRhythm
Pricing notesJira Cloud pricing on the Atlassian Marketplace: free for up to 10 users; annual subscriptions of $420 for 15 users, $700 for 25 users and $1,400 for 50 users, rising by user tier. Data Center is priced separately. 30-day free trial (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateRetrospective actions become Jira issues and resurface automatically until completed

Easy Agile TeamRhythm is a Jira app built around the user story map, and grew out of the product earlier sold as Easy Agile User Story Maps. Teams plan Jira work on the map so priorities stay visible, and because the app is native to Jira, the map works on the same issues the team already tracks.

The app has grown beyond the map. Planning Poker supports team estimation, dependency visualisation flags blockers, and flow metrics such as cycle time, throughput and ageing work in progress feed AI-generated delivery insights. Retrospective boards use templates or custom formats, and their action items become Jira issues linked to an epic and sprint.

Easy Agile reports 4,000 installs on the Atlassian Marketplace and 10,000 product teams across its apps. It is free for up to 10 users on Jira Cloud and priced by Atlassian user tier above that. A demo sandbox lets buyers try it without installing.

Potential strengths

  • Free for Jira sites with up to 10 users
  • Covers story mapping, Planning Poker, dependencies and retrospectives in one licence

Trade-offs

  • Runs only inside Jira, so non-Jira teams cannot use it
  • Priced by total Jira user tier, which can exceed the number of people using the map

ProductGo

Consider forJira teams that want a story map with a goal level above epics, user personas and roadmaps inside Jira, as DevSamurai documents for ProductGo
Pricing notesJira Cloud free for up to 10 users, then $1.50 per user per month for 11–100 users, $1.00 for 101–250 and lower rates at higher tiers. Data Center annual licences from $500 for up to 50 users and $800 for up to 100. 30-day free trial (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateAdds a goal or theme layer above Jira epics to build a three-level story map

ProductGo, from DevSamurai, is sold on the Atlassian Marketplace as Agile User Story Map, Portfolio Roadmaps and Persona for Jira. It adds a layer above Jira epics so that a map can run three levels deep, from goal or theme to epic to story.

Planning can be done by release or by sprint, or without swimlanes for reporting. JQL quick filters narrow the map, and goals and epics can be colour-coded. Personas are stored inside the Jira project and attached to goals, which keeps user context next to the work. The product family also includes a roadmap for Jira, a portfolio board, an advanced Kanban board and a story map view for Confluence, and the vendor advertises AI assistance.

The site reports more than 3,000 teams and 3,410 installs. Jira Cloud is free for instances under 10 users and billed per user above that, following Atlassian's tier rules.

Potential strengths

  • Publishes per-user rates for every Cloud tier
  • Includes personas, roadmaps and a story map view for Confluence

Trade-offs

  • Runs only in the Atlassian ecosystem
  • Server and Data Center licences can only be bought yearly

Story Maps for Jira (Realigned)

specialiststorymapping.app ↗
Consider forJira Software teams that want a story map with sprint and release swimlanes at no cost, and larger programmes that need custom iterations and goals, as Realigned documents for its two editions
Pricing notesStory Maps for Jira is free on the Atlassian Marketplace. Advanced Story Maps for Jira Cloud is free for up to 10 users, then $175 a year for 25 users, $350 for 50 users and $700 for 100 users (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateA no-charge core edition that writes directly to Jira issues, sprints and releases

Realigned Technologies sells two Jira apps for story mapping. Story Maps for Jira is free and provides the core experience: multiple maps per project, sprint and release swimlanes, epics and issues arranged along the user journey, and drag-and-drop planning. Issues can be created from the map, and all data stays in the customer's Jira instance.

Advanced Story Maps extends the map for programme and portfolio planning. It adds custom swimlanes, custom timeframes and field values for long-range plans, goal connections, links with custom link types, PNG export and admin configuration. The Marketplace listing describes three levels for user activities, backbone items and user stories and states compatibility with SAFe and LeSS.

The vendor site states that more than 3,000 Jira teams use the apps and that the core edition has been rebuilt on Atlassian Forge.

Potential strengths

  • Core edition costs nothing
  • Advanced edition supports custom swimlanes, iteration planning and portfolio maps across teams

Trade-offs

  • Runs only inside Jira Cloud
  • PNG export and admin configuration are limited to the Advanced edition

Agile User Story Map PRO (Bauer)

specialistbauer-information-technology.com ↗
Consider forJira teams with large backlogs that want to map hundreds of stories by customer journey, with product backlog, sprint backlog and taskboard linked, as Bauer documents
Pricing notesJira Cloud on the Atlassian Marketplace: $8 a month or $80 a year for up to 10 users, $750 a year for 25 users and $1,500 for 50 users. 30-day free trial; free for non-profit and open source licences; academic discounts on request (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateDynamic column and row configuration with colour coding across the map

Bauer Information Technology describes Agile User Story Map PRO as the first paid add-on for Jira Cloud. The app is aimed at teams handling hundreds of user stories, and lets them build a map from scratch around a customer journey or lay out an existing backlog.

Colour coding and dynamic column and row configuration give what the vendor calls a four-dimensional view of the product. The product backlog, sprint backlogs and taskboards are linked automatically, which the vendor presents as support for backlog grooming and team workload management. The Marketplace listing adds that the app is supported in English and German, and mentions Bauer Corkboard, which digitises a photographed physical story map into Jira.

The site cites more than 1,000 customers in 39 countries. Jira Cloud pricing starts at $8 a month for up to 10 users, with no free tier beyond the trial.

Potential strengths

  • Charges from the first user but at a low entry price
  • Free for non-profit and open source organisations

Trade-offs

  • Parts of the vendor website appear dated, with a 2020 copyright line
  • Runs only inside Jira

Miro

enterprisemiro.com ↗
Consider forCross-functional teams that run story mapping workshops on a general visual collaboration board, using Miro's own and community templates, as Miro documents
Pricing notesFree plan with 3 editable boards and unlimited members. Starter $8 per member per month billed annually or $10 billed monthly. Business $20 per member per month. Enterprise is custom priced from 30 members (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateDozens of story map templates, including Miro's own and community versions used thousands of times

Miro is a general visual collaboration platform, not a dedicated story mapping product. It appears here because many teams run story mapping sessions on a whiteboard they already license. Its template gallery lists a Miro User Story Map template, which describes the Jeff Patton technique for planning releases, a Visual Story Map template and many community templates. The most used, from Bluefruit Software, shows 2,200 uses on the gallery page.

On a whiteboard, the map is built from sticky notes and frames. That suits workshops, discovery and remote facilitation, but the map has no built-in concept of a story, release slice or backlog item in the way the dedicated tools on this page do.

The free plan allows unlimited members and 3 editable boards. Starter unlocks unlimited private boards, Business adds AI collaboration and advanced security, and Enterprise adds SCIM, SSO and governance add-ons from 30 members.

Potential strengths

  • Free plan allows story mapping on up to 3 active boards
  • Lists ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II and other certifications

Trade-offs

  • Story maps are sticky notes on a canvas rather than a structured backlog
  • No story-map-specific release slicing or backlog sync is documented on the template pages

Mural

enterprisemural.co ↗
Consider forTeams that run facilitated story mapping sessions, with anonymous voting and timeboxing, on a visual collaboration board, as Mural documents in its story map template
Pricing notesFree plan with 3 editable murals. Team+ $9.99 per member per month billed annually or $12 billed monthly. Business $17.99 per member per month billed annually, with unlimited guests and SSO. Enterprise is quoted (checked Sep 2026)
Feature to evaluateThe story map template walks a team through five steps from topic to release groupings

Mural is a visual collaboration platform with a user story mapping template. The template page sets out the technique in five steps: choose a topic, map the main user activities, detail the steps under each activity, map user stories to each step, and organise the stories into releases prioritised by user value, business value and technical risk.

Mural's case for story mapping rests on facilitation. Every plan includes what Mural calls Facilitation Superpowers: summoning participants, a timer for timeboxing, anonymous voting for prioritisation, and private mode to avoid groupthink. Those features suit a workshop in which a group builds and slices a map together.

The free plan allows 3 editable murals. Team+ adds unlimited murals and private rooms. Business adds unlimited guests, SSO and priority support, and Enterprise adds multiple workspaces and confidential rooms. Integrations include Jira Cloud, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Slack. Mural states that more than half of the Fortune 100 use it.

Potential strengths

  • Voting, timer, private mode and summon features on every plan
  • Jira Cloud listed among core integrations

Trade-offs

  • Maps are whiteboard content, not a structured backlog
  • Guests require the Business plan or above

How to choose a vendor

Decide where the backlog of record lives

If the team plans in Jira and wants the map to be a view of Jira issues, the four Jira apps keep one source of truth and need no sync. Standalone tools such as CardBoard, StoriesOnBoard and Avion hold their own cards and push or sync them to Jira, Azure DevOps or other trackers, which suits teams that map before the backlog exists or work across several trackers. Whiteboards hold free-form sticky notes and suit workshops more than ongoing backlog management.

Check which plan includes the integration

Several vendors reserve tracker integration for a higher tier. CardBoard lists Jira and Azure DevOps integration from its Business plan, StoriesOnBoard from Standard and Avion from Business. A team that needs two-way sync should price that tier, not the entry plan.

Compare the billing unit, not the headline figure

The meters differ. StoriesOnBoard, Miro and Mural charge per user or member. Avion and FeatureMap charge a flat monthly fee with unlimited users. CardBoard charges per plan with a set number of collaborators and a fee per extra collaborator. Jira apps follow Atlassian Marketplace user tiers, which count every user on the Jira site, not only the people who open the map.

Frequently asked questions

What is user story mapping software?

It is software for building a user story map, a technique popularised by Jeff Patton. User activities run across the top, the steps and stories beneath them, and horizontal slices group the stories into releases. Dedicated tools add backlog sync, personas and release planning. Whiteboards offer the layout as a template.

How much does user story mapping software cost?

All ten products publish a price or a free tier. StoriesOnBoard costs $9 to $15 per user per month on annual billing. CardBoard starts at $9 a month for one collaborator. Avion costs $83 to $166 a month on yearly billing with unlimited users, and FeatureMap €99 a month. Easy Agile TeamRhythm, ProductGo and Realigned's Advanced Story Maps are free for Jira sites up to 10 users. Realigned's core Story Maps for Jira is free.

Can Jira do user story mapping on its own?

Jira's standard boards and backlog are lists, not two-dimensional story maps. Teams add a Marketplace app such as Easy Agile TeamRhythm, ProductGo, Realigned's Story Maps or Bauer's Agile User Story Map PRO, which display Jira epics and issues as a map and write changes back. Standalone tools such as CardBoard, StoriesOnBoard and Avion sync with Jira instead.

What is the difference between a story mapping tool and a whiteboard?

A story mapping tool treats cards as backlog items with states, estimates and release assignments, and can sync them to a tracker. A whiteboard such as Miro or Mural treats them as sticky notes. Whiteboards suit workshops and early discovery. Dedicated tools suit teams that keep the map as the live backlog.

Which tools are free?

Realigned's Story Maps for Jira is free. Easy Agile TeamRhythm, ProductGo and Advanced Story Maps are free for Jira Cloud sites with up to 10 users. Miro and Mural have free plans limited to 3 editable boards. FeatureMap is free for non-profit associations, and Bauer's app is free for non-profit and open source licences.

Which tools sync with Azure DevOps?

CardBoard lists Azure DevOps on its Business and Enterprise plans. StoriesOnBoard lists Azure DevOps and TFS from its Standard plan. Avion lists Azure DevOps on Business. The Jira apps on this page work only with Jira.

Do these tools use AI?

StoriesOnBoard includes a monthly AI token allowance on every plan for writing story maps, personas, stories and acceptance criteria. Easy Agile TeamRhythm uses AI to explain delivery metrics before retrospectives. ProductGo advertises AI assistance. Miro includes AI collaboration on its Business plan.

How was this list put together?

Each product was checked against its own website, pricing page or Atlassian Marketplace listing in September 2026. Prices are quoted as published, with the check date. The list includes only products that document a user story mapping feature. Position on the page is not a ranking, and no vendor has confirmed its entry.
