Best Mental Health Software (2026): Top 6 Compared

Updated October 2026By StatWharf Editorial6 vendorsMethodology

Mental health software here means the electronic health record and practice management system a therapy or psychiatry practice runs on: scheduling, intake, progress notes, treatment plans, billing and insurance claims, a client portal and telehealth. The six products below split two ways. SimplePractice, TheraNest, TherapyAppointment and Sessions Health publish self-serve subscriptions aimed at solo therapists and small groups. ICANotes and Valant add prescriber tools such as ePrescribing and PDMP checks for psychiatry and mixed practices. Consumer therapy and wellness apps are outside the scope of this page.

These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

Mental health software, in the sense used on this page, is the clinical and administrative system a therapy or psychiatry practice runs on every day. It books appointments and sends reminders, collects intake paperwork, stores progress notes and treatment plans, submits insurance claims, takes payments and gives clients a secure portal and telehealth link. Buyers range from a newly licensed solo counselor with a handful of clients to group practices with prescribers and community agencies running state-funded programs. Consumer therapy, meditation and mood-tracking apps serve patients directly and are a separate category not covered here.

The comparison below covers six products. Four publish self-serve subscription prices, ICANotes publishes clinician-level prices with a prescribing tier, and Valant quotes each deal. Pricing comes from each vendor’s public pricing page, checked on 12 October 2026.

Vendor details and trade-offs

SimplePractice

smbsimplepractice.com ↗
Consider forSolo and small group therapy practices that want scheduling, notes, insurance billing, a client portal and telehealth in one subscription, as SimplePractice's pricing page describes
Pricing notesSolo plans are Starter at $49, Essential at $79 and Plus at $99 per month, billed monthly. Group practices on Plus pay $99 per month for the first practitioner and $74 for each additional practitioner; groups of 6 or more practitioners are offered custom pricing. Add-ons include Care Aide at $59 per month for the account owner and $49 per additional clinician, Note Taker at $35 per month, and ePrescribe at $49 per month plus an $89 setup fee. A 50% discount for the first 3 months was advertised, and the free trial runs up to 30 days (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateEvery plan includes unlimited clients, telehealth, online payments, progress notes, paperless intake, a client portal website and a mobile app

SimplePractice is a cloud practice management and EHR platform aimed at therapists and other private-practice clinicians. Its pricing page states that more than 20 million clients and 250,000 practitioners use the platform, a figure that is the vendor's own. The product covers the administrative cycle of a small practice: client intake, scheduling and reminders, notes and treatment plans, billing and insurance claims, and a client-facing portal.

The plans are tiered by feature set. All three solo plans list unlimited clients, Insurance Essentials, telehealth, online payments, progress notes, paperless intake documents, a client portal website and an EHR mobile app. Higher tiers add items such as integrated measurement-based care, online appointment requests, a template library, appointment reminders, calendar sync, customizable treatment plans, Wiley Treatment Planners and secure client messaging. Plus adds group appointments, group telehealth, a premium support phone line, an appointment request widget and the ability to add clinicians.

AI tools are sold separately. Care Aide bundles Note Taker, which drafts progress notes from recorded or dictated sessions, with Session Sidekick, a beta Treatment Planner and client summaries. Note Taker can also be bought alone. ePrescribe handles prescriptions and refills for prescribing clinicians, and an Insurance Navigator service, listed as coming soon, will charge per claim filed.

Group practices of six or more practitioners are routed to a sales consultant for custom pricing, onboarding and support.

Potential strengths

  • Published prices for every solo tier and for additional group practitioners
  • Free trial of up to 30 days before a plan must be chosen

Trade-offs

  • Group appointments and group telehealth are listed as Plus plan features
  • AI documentation and ePrescribing are paid add-ons on every plan

TheraNest (Ensora Health)

smbensorahealth.com ↗
Consider forSolo therapists and group mental health practices that want an EHR with insurance billing automation and payer credentialing support, as Ensora Health's TheraNest pricing page describes
Pricing notesTheraNest offers Essentials, Advanced and Premier plans at $29, $59 and $89 per therapist per month, with unlimited clients on every plan, on monthly or annual subscriptions; annual plans include one month free. Add-ons include the Ensai Session Assistant AI scribe at $35 per provider per month, Wiley Treatment Planner at $25 per therapist per month, telehealth at $12 per therapist per month, and Ensora eRx with PDMP at $45 per therapist per month plus a $135 one-time setup fee per practice. Payments cost 2.99% plus $0.30 per transaction. A 21-day Premier trial requires no credit card (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluatePayer credentialing by a specialist team is bundled into higher plans, with one or two enrollments per therapist and more on annual billing

TheraNest is the mental health EHR sold by Ensora Health, which also sells Fusion for rehabilitation therapy. Ensora's pricing page describes TheraNest as software built for therapists and states that every plan includes unlimited clients. The product covers scheduling, a secure client portal with documents, appointments and online payments, intake forms, clinical case management with ICD-10 tools, and appointment, clinical and billing reports.

Plan differences centre on intake, documentation and billing. The entry plan includes basic intake forms, scheduling, calendar sync, core reports and multi-factor authentication. Higher plans add custom intake forms, online booking for individual and group appointments, secure messaging, custom client, case and progress notes, group practice reports, insurance billing automation and Ensai notes enhancement, an AI tool for polishing progress notes.

Credentialing is the feature that most separates TheraNest from other self-serve products here. Ensora states that a specialist team prepares, submits and follows up on payer enrollments, with no commission taken from sessions. The pricing page lists one payer enrollment per therapist on one plan and two on another, each rising by one on annual billing.

Claims processing, eligibility checks and text or phone reminders include 50 free items per practice per month on lower plans, then $0.23 per claim, $0.25 per eligibility check and $0.10 per reminder; the Premier column lists these as unlimited, subject to a fair-usage policy. Revenue cycle management is available as a separately priced service.

Potential strengths

  • Lowest entry plan price per therapist among the published plans on this page
  • Billers, schedulers and practice administrators can be added at no extra charge

Trade-offs

  • Claims, eligibility checks and reminders carry per-item fees after 50 a month on lower plans
  • AI scribe, telehealth and treatment planner are separate add-ons

Pricing notesFull-time clinician plans are Notes Only at $55 per month with unlimited notes, Non-Prescribing at $75 per month and Prescribing at $213 per month. Part-time clinician plans are Notes Only at $35 and Non-Prescribing at $45 per month with 60 notes a month, and Prescribing at $138 per month with 100 notes a month. Telehealth is $20 per user per month, AI Scribe $49 per user per month, and non-clinical users are free for the first user and $25 per month each after that. Text reminders, claims and statements are priced by sales (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateSeparate full-time and part-time clinician rates, and a Prescribing plan that bundles ePrescribing, medication management and lab ordering

ICANotes is a behavioral health EHR founded in 1999. Its homepage addresses psychiatrists, therapists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners, group therapists and addiction specialists, in solo, group and integrated care practices, and states that more than 20,000 clinicians use it. The vendor lists ONC certification, HIPAA compliance and readiness for CARF and Joint Commission requirements.

Documentation is the product's main emphasis. ICANotes uses menu-driven templates for SOAP, BIRP, DAP, group, case management and discharge notes, and its homepage claims notes can be completed in under three minutes; that is the vendor's figure. The platform includes more than 100 clinical rating scales and an ambient AI scribe that drafts notes from sessions.

The plan ladder separates note-taking, practice management and prescribing. Notes Only provides pre-configured clinical templates for progress notes, treatment plans and assessments. Non-Prescribing adds scheduling with automated reminders, secure messaging, a client portal, billing tools for non-prescribing services and outcome reporting. Prescribing adds ePrescribing with integrated medication management and lab ordering and results. Each tier has a full-time and a part-time rate, and the part-time rates cap monthly notes.

Billing features listed on the homepage include insurance verification, electronic claims, auto-posted payments and claim scrubbing, with optional outsourced revenue cycle management. ICANotes also continues to sell its older Classic platform under separate pricing.

Potential strengths

  • Part-time clinician pricing lowers cost for practitioners with small caseloads
  • Prescribing plan includes EPCS ePrescribing, PDMP checks and lab integration

Trade-offs

  • Notes Only plans are available only to non-prescribers
  • Claims, text reminders and statements are not priced on the public page

TherapyAppointment

budgettherapyappointment.com ↗
Consider forSolo therapists whose caseload is small or growing, and group practices that want all features in one monthly price, as TherapyAppointment's pricing page describes
Pricing notesSolo practices are free for the first 30 days, then $10 per month until more than 10 sessions are booked, $39 per month until more than 39 sessions are booked, and $59 per month after 40 sessions. The Group plan is $59 per month plus $39 per month per additional clinician, plus $10 per month if under 11 appointments. Add-ons include AI Notes at $0.59 per chart note, telehealth at $15 per month per provider, ePrescribing at $65 per month per prescriber with a $110 setup fee, electronic claims at $0.15 per claim paid to Office Ally, and eligibility checks at 7 cents per lookup. Annual billing is not offered (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateMonthly price rises with sessions booked, so a new practice pays $10 a month until its caseload passes 10 sessions

TherapyAppointment is a practice management and EHR platform for solo and group therapy practices, with separate offers for university counseling and training centers. Its site states that more than 40,000 practices use it, which is the vendor's own figure. The company prices on volume rather than features: every plan includes every feature, and the monthly fee depends on how many sessions a practice books.

Included features cover the core practice workflow. The pricing page lists free administrative accounts, free appointment reminders, a free secure client portal with unlimited messaging, automated intake with e-signatures, client self-scheduling, customizable calendar availability, support for multiple locations, two-way calendar sync with Google, iCal and Outlook, paperless assessments and progress notes, free SOAP and HIPAA templates, financial reporting, free ERA posting, problem-claim notifications and free live support. A free listing in its Therapist Finder directory is included.

The Group plan adds a payroll report summary, clinician matching by best fit and earliest availability, reports by clinician and location, custom staff access settings, clinical supervisor sign-off, custom claim settings per clinician, new-client triage and single sign-on at $5 per staff member per month.

Paid extras are mainly transactional. AI Notes drafts session notes, treatment plans and summaries per chart note, with unlimited free edits. Payments cost 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction, and an integrated Zoom option costs $5 per month per provider plus the practice's own HIPAA-compliant Zoom licence. Non-profit and education pricing is by quote.

Potential strengths

  • Every feature is included in the base price, with free administrative accounts and reminders
  • Low entry cost for practices with few sessions

Trade-offs

  • No annual billing option
  • AI notes are charged per chart note rather than included

Card payments run through Stripe at 2.9% plus $0.30 (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateInsurance billing tools including secondary claims, incident-to billing and out-of-network courtesy billing are included in the base plan

Sessions Health is a cloud EHR and practice management system for therapists, with features organised around solo practitioners, group practices and billers. Its site highlights insurance-based therapists, and the billing feature set reflects that focus. The pricing page states there are no long-term contracts and that core features are included in every plan.

Both plans share the same core: a HIPAA-compliant online EHR, payment processing and insurance billing, scheduling with calendar integration, custom forms and note templates, a secure client portal and unlimited document storage. Documentation features include a library of form templates, auto-scored assessments, treatment plans, questionnaires and the option to load content from a previous note.

Billing features listed for both plans include integrated card payments with stored methods and AutoPay, automated superbills, electronic claims with batch processing, ERAs, real-time eligibility reports, secondary claims, incident-to billing and out-of-network courtesy billing. The client portal handles paperless intake with e-signature, secure messaging and online scheduling, and supports minors, couples and conjoint clients. Scheduling covers two-way and one-way calendar sync, email and SMS reminders and client time-zone handling.

Telehealth is browser-based, supports up to four participants, and includes a waiting room, screen sharing and in-session chat. AI Assist adds AI notes generated from session summaries and from integrated telehealth sessions, with in-person scribing listed as coming soon. Claim fees fall from $0.25 to $0.19 as monthly volume passes 200, 500, 800 and 1,000 claims.

Valant

mid-marketvalant.io ↗
Consider forOutpatient behavioral health practices, including psychiatry, therapy, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs, from solo practices to multi-practice organizations, as Valant's homepage describes
Pricing notesQuote-based. Valant does not publish fixed prices. Its pricing page states that quotes depend on the number and type of provider licenses, including therapist, prescriber and supervisor roles, practice size and specialty, workflow needs and optional add-ons such as patient engagement, intake automation, telehealth, reporting and AI-assisted documentation. The page describes tiered pricing without naming tiers (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCovers acute outpatient levels of care such as IOP and PHP alongside routine therapy and psychiatry, with utilization review and an integrated clearinghouse

Valant is a behavioral health EHR that combines clinical documentation, practice management, patient engagement and revenue cycle management. Its homepage addresses psychiatry clinicians, psychiatric nurse practitioners, therapy clinicians, practice managers, owners and billers, across solo therapy and psychiatry practices, small and large groups, multi-practice or franchise organisations and billing agencies.

The product's range extends further than the self-serve tools on this page. Valant names outpatient programs and acute outpatient levels of care, including intensive outpatient programs and partial hospitalization programs, as settings it supports. Its clinical module lists documentation, AI Notes Assist, intake and assessment automation, ePrescribing, group therapy software, PDMP, treatment planning, eLabs, clinical reporting and telehealth.

Practice management covers billing, utilization review, scheduling, prospective patient management, integrated card processing, consent and intake forms, performance reporting, an integrated clearinghouse, eligibility checking, API management and Claim Assist. Patients use the MYIO portal for telehealth, online bill pay and communications. Valant also sells revenue cycle management as a service, staffed by a dedicated behavioral health billing team.

Pricing is quoted. The plans-and-pricing page explains that the number and type of licenses, practice size, specialty and add-ons determine the quote, and that a product specialist reviews options after a request. Practices comparing it with self-serve products should request a written quote covering add-ons and any implementation fees.

Potential strengths

  • Clinical module includes ePrescribing, PDMP, eLabs and group therapy tools
  • Revenue cycle management service with a dedicated behavioral health billing team

Trade-offs

  • No public prices or trial terms
  • Quote process requires a call with a product specialist

How to choose a vendor

Decide whether anyone in the practice prescribes

Therapy-only practices can use any product here. Practices with psychiatrists or psychiatric nurse practitioners need ePrescribing, and controlled substances need EPCS and often PDMP checks. ICANotes builds prescribing into its Prescribing plan, Valant lists ePrescribing and PDMP in its clinical module, and SimplePractice, TheraNest and TherapyAppointment sell ePrescribing as a paid add-on, with setup fees at some vendors.

Price insurance billing per claim, not only per seat

Insurance-based practices pay twice: a monthly subscription and a fee for each electronic claim, eligibility check or reminder. Published per-claim fees on this page run from $0.15 at TherapyAppointment to $0.19 to $0.25 at Sessions Health, while TheraNest Premier lists unlimited claims under a fair-usage policy. A practice filing several hundred claims a month should model those fees before comparing headline prices.

Separate solo pricing from group and agency pricing

Most self-serve vendors price the first clinician and each additional clinician differently. SimplePractice Plus is $99 for the first practitioner and $74 for each additional one, Sessions Health is $39 plus $29, and TherapyAppointment Group is $59 plus $39. SimplePractice moves groups of six or more to custom pricing. Valant quotes every deal, which suits larger groups, intensive outpatient programs and multi-site agencies with compliance reporting needs.

Frequently asked questions

What is mental health software?

Mental health software usually means an electronic health record and practice management system built for therapists, counselors, psychologists and psychiatric prescribers. It handles scheduling, intake forms, progress notes and treatment plans, insurance claims and payments, a client portal and often telehealth. It differs from general medical EHRs in its note formats, such as SOAP, DAP and BIRP, its treatment planning tools and its support for group and couples sessions.

How much does mental health EHR software cost?

Published subscriptions on this page start at $0 for Sessions Health Freemium with up to 3 clients and $10 per month for TherapyAppointment at low session volume. Typical full plans run $29 to $99 per clinician per month, with ICANotes Prescribing at $213 for full-time prescribers. Valant quotes each deal. Most vendors also charge per claim, per reminder or per payment, and AI note tools usually cost $35 to $59 per clinician per month extra.

Which options suit a solo therapist starting a practice?

Sessions Health has a free plan for up to 3 clients, TherapyAppointment charges $10 per month until more than 10 sessions are booked, and TheraNest's entry plan is $29 per therapist per month. SimplePractice Starter is $49 per month. Each offers a trial of 21 to 30 days. A new practice should check which plan includes the client portal, reminders and insurance billing it needs.

Which mental health software supports ePrescribing?

ICANotes includes ePrescribing with medication management and lab ordering in its Prescribing plan, and its homepage lists EPCS and PDMP checks. Valant lists ePrescribing, PDMP and eLabs in its clinical module. SimplePractice ($49 per month plus $89 setup), TheraNest ($45 per therapist per month plus $135 setup) and TherapyAppointment ($65 per month plus $110 setup) sell it as an add-on.

Do these products include AI note-taking?

Most vendors here now sell an AI scribe or note assistant, usually as an add-on. Listed prices are SimplePractice Note Taker at $35 per month or Care Aide at $59, TheraNest Ensai Session Assistant at $35 per provider, ICANotes AI Scribe at $49 per user, Sessions Health AI Assist at $35 per practitioner, and TherapyAppointment AI Notes at $0.59 per chart note. Valant lists AI Notes Assist without a public price.

What should a group practice or agency look for?

Group practices should compare the price of each additional clinician, supervisor sign-off, staff permissions, payroll and clinician-level reports, and free administrative seats. TherapyAppointment Group, SimplePractice Plus and Sessions Health publish per-clinician group prices. Larger groups, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs and community agencies usually need a quoted system such as Valant.

Are these products HIPAA compliant?

SimplePractice, TheraNest, ICANotes and Sessions Health state HIPAA compliance on the pages reviewed, and SimplePractice links a business associate agreement from its site. Compliance claims are not certifications. A practice handling protected health information should obtain and review a signed business associate agreement from the chosen vendor before entering client data, and confirm that telehealth, messaging and AI scribe features are covered by it.
