These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

Document generation software turns structured data into finished business documents. A template defines the layout and placeholders; the software fills it from a CRM record, form submission, spreadsheet row or API payload and outputs a PDF, Word, Excel or PowerPoint file. Typical outputs include quotes, proposals, invoices, statements, offer letters and reports. Contract lifecycle suites, which manage negotiation, approval and renewal of agreements, are compared on the StatWharf contract management software page.

The comparison below covers ten products, from no-code cloud tools priced by monthly document volume to developer APIs and CRM-native platforms. Information comes from each vendor’s own product, documentation or pricing page, checked on 11 October 2026. Eight vendors publish prices; Conga and Experlogix quote on request.

Vendor details and trade-offs

Formstack Documents

mid-marketformstack.com ↗
Consider forOrganizations that collect data through online forms and want those submissions turned into documents and sent for signature without code, including Salesforce teams that need native generation, as Formstack's product and pricing pages describe
Pricing notesFormstack sells document generation in its Suite, which combines Forms, Documents and Sign, starting at $250 per month paid annually or $299 billed monthly, with 3 builder users, 100 forms, 5,000 submissions per form, 10GB storage and unlimited document senders. Salesforce Solutions, which include document generation from Salesforce data, and Enterprise Solutions, which include high-volume generation, API access and SSO, are custom priced. The 14-day free trial covers the Forms product (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateNo-code generation from DOCX, PPTX, PDF or CSV templates, with an AI-assisted template builder and data pulled from CRMs, forms and databases

Formstack Documents is the document generation product within Formstack's workflow suite. Templates can be uploaded in DOCX, PPTX, PDF or CSV format, or created with an AI-powered builder, and merge fields are filled from CRMs, form builders, databases and other business systems. Generated files can then be routed for e-signature through Formstack Sign or delivered to connected applications.

The current pricing page sells document generation as part of the Suite rather than as a separate entry plan. The Suite includes Formstack Forms, so organizations that already gather applications, intake forms or order details online can generate the resulting letter, agreement or order form from each submission. Formstack lists more than 300 integrations, and additional users, submissions and merges can be bought once a plan is active.

Formstack also offers Salesforce Solutions, which provide Salesforce-native forms, document generation powered by Salesforce data, one-click generation, Experience Cloud integration and Salesforce Shield compatibility. The product page lists data encryption, document security and HIPAA compliance, and the Enterprise tier adds custom SLAs, SSO and high-volume generation.

Potential strengths

  • Forms, generation and signature come from one vendor
  • Separate Salesforce-native offering for CRM teams

Trade-offs

  • Document generation is not listed as a standalone self-serve plan
  • Salesforce and high-volume plans require a quote

Docmosis

specialistdocmosis.com ↗
Consider forDevelopers and SaaS companies that need template-based PDF and Word generation through a cloud API or a self-hosted engine, with templates maintained by non-developers in Word, as Docmosis's site describes
Pricing notesDocmosis Cloud is priced by pages per month with no overage charges and no minimum term. At the 4,000 pages-per-month quota shown on the pricing page, Professional is $49 USD per month (1 user, 1 environment), Business $64 (3 users, 2 environments) and Enterprise $78 (10 users, 4 environments). Tornado and Docmosis Java are licensed per project at $3,795, $6,695, $9,995 or $17,145 by converter count, including 12 months of support and updates, with optional renewals from $1,518 to $6,858 (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateOne engine offered three ways, as a hosted REST API, the Tornado server and an embeddable Java library, with no per-CPU or per-user template editor fees

Docmosis is a template-based document generation engine sold in three editions that share the same engine and differ in hosting, integration and licensing. Docmosis Cloud is a hosted REST API, Tornado is a server that customers run in their own environment, and Docmosis Java is a library embedded in Java applications.

Templates are created in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer by typing plain-text placeholders. The engine can inject text, images and tables, add or remove content conditionally, perform calculations, loop over repeating data and format numbers, while page layout, headers, footers and tables of contents stay in the word processor. Generated documents are output as PDF, DOCX, ODT or TXT.

Docmosis names SaaS companies adding user-customizable reports, small businesses automating client documents and large corporations replacing code-based generation systems as its users, across finance, insurance, health, legal, education, HR and logistics. Cloud usage above quota continues to generate documents; Docmosis emails an upgrade notice only after two consecutive months over the quota.

Potential strengths

  • Published prices for both cloud and self-hosted editions
  • No hard block or charge when the cloud page quota is exceeded

Trade-offs

  • Aimed at developers integrating an engine rather than business users
  • Output limited to PDF, DOCX, ODT and TXT

S-Docs

specialistsdocs.com ↗
Consider forSalesforce customers in public sector, financial services, healthcare and other regulated industries that want document generation and e-signature without sending data outside Salesforce, as S-Docs's site and knowledge base describe
Pricing notesThe free edition of S-Docs for Salesforce allows unlimited templates, up to 150 generated documents and up to 50 e-signatures with no user limit. The paid edition offers unlimited templates and documents and up to 50 e-signatures per year for $25 per user per month billed annually, with a $3,000 minimum contract and a minimum of 10 licences. S-Docs with e-Signature adds unlimited envelopes. Volume pricing applies from 50 users, nonprofit discounts are available, and enterprise plans are quoted (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateDocuments and templates stored as Salesforce records, with no third-party data processing and CAC/PIV signature support

S-Docs is a document generation and e-signature product that runs entirely inside Salesforce. Templates and generated documents are stored as Salesforce records, processing uses the org's own data, security model and permissions, and S-Docs states that no third-party data processing takes place. The company lists FedRAMP High and DoD IL5 authorization and CAC/PIV signature support, and positions the product for public sector, financial services and healthcare organizations.

Templates can draw on standard and custom objects, business rules and reusable logic, and documents can be generated on demand, through automation or at scale, as well as invoked through the company's AIforce feature. Generated files can be saved as attachments or files on records, or stored in Amazon S3, Box or Google Drive.

S-Docs does not support Salesforce Professional Edition or Salesforce Essentials. All users in an org must be on the same edition, and only users who create or send documents need licences. The pricing page states that a HubSpot version is also available, priced by quote.

Potential strengths

  • Free edition for low-volume evaluation
  • Unlimited documents on the paid per-user plan

Trade-offs

  • Requires Salesforce Enterprise, Unlimited, Performance or Developer Edition
  • Ten-licence minimum applies even to small Salesforce orgs

Consider forBusinesses that want to turn existing Word, PowerPoint, Excel or PDF documents into templates fed by CRM, HR, form and database data, as Docupilot's site and pricing page describe
Pricing notesStarter $29 per month (100 delivered documents, 1 seat), Plus $99 (500, 3 seats), Pro $149 (1,000, 5 seats), Premium $199 (2,000, 7 seats), Business $399 (5,000, 15 seats) and Enterprise $699 (10,000, 25 seats, template versioning and approvals). Business and Enterprise offer invoice billing with a yearly commitment. Extra seats are $4 per seat per month, and e-signature starts at $1.50 per envelope with volume rates down to $0.75. A 14-day free trial needs no credit card (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateEvery plan includes unlimited templates, API access and Word, PowerPoint, Excel and PDF template formats

Docupilot is a cloud document automation tool aimed at teams that repeatedly produce the same documents for different clients. Existing documents become templates by replacing details with placeholders such as client name and address, and Docupilot fills them from mapped data drawn from CRMs, HR systems, forms and databases.

Templates can be built in a no-code document builder or uploaded as Word, PowerPoint, Excel or PDF files. Conditional logic shows or hides sections and repeats blocks based on the data. Output can be PDF, DOCX or HTML, delivered by email or to Dropbox, Google Drive, DocuSign or other connected applications. Docupilot lists native integrations with Zapier, Airtable, Make and more than 70 tools, along with a REST API and webhooks.

Built-in e-signature is sold as an add-on per envelope. Usage is counted by delivered documents: Docupilot sends notices at 80%, 90% and 100% of the monthly allowance, and generation pauses at the limit until the account upgrades. Upgrades are prorated against credits already used.

Potential strengths

  • Six published tiers from 100 to 10,000 documents
  • Unlimited templates and testing on every plan

Trade-offs

  • Generation stops at 100% of the monthly limit until the plan is upgraded
  • Seats beyond the plan allowance cost extra

Documint

smbdocumint.me ↗
Consider forSmall businesses and no-code builders generating invoices, contracts, proposals, quotes and reports from form, Airtable or other app data without technical skills, as Documint's site describes
Pricing notesSilver $39 per month billed annually with 2,400 documents per year and 5 e-sign envelopes per month; Gold $124 per month billed annually with 12,000 documents per year and 25 envelopes; Platinum $249 per month billed annually with 60,000 documents per year and 50 envelopes. Monthly billing costs about 20% more. Additional document and envelope packs are sold per plan, enterprise volume is quoted, a 14-day free trial runs on Silver and a 14-day money-back guarantee applies (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateA document can run to any number of pages and still counts as one merge, with unlimited template variables

Documint is a cloud document generation tool for teams that want professional documents from their data without coding. Its site presents use cases for forms, proposals, quotes, contracts, reports and invoices, and highlights how line items break across pages in generated invoices.

Templates are built in Documint's own designer or started from pre-made options, and dynamic content uses Handlebars variables. An asset manager stores logos, images and other files used across templates. Documint connects to no-code platforms and offers a REST API; its FAQ explains that Airtable users can generate PDFs from a link or button, while fully automatic generation from Airtable requires an automation script.

Each document created counts as one merge regardless of page count. Sensitive data is retained for no longer than 24 hours and generated PDFs are not stored. The pricing FAQ states that Documint is not SOC 2 compliant and does not offer embedded or on-premise deployment, which matters for buyers with formal security reviews.

Potential strengths

  • E-sign envelopes included in every plan
  • Generated PDFs are not stored by Documint

Trade-offs

  • Not SOC 2 compliant, according to its pricing FAQ
  • No embedded or on-premise deployment option

DocsAutomator

smbdocsautomator.co ↗
Consider forTeams that want documents drafted from records in tools they already use, sent for signature and filed automatically, including teams calling generation from AI agents, as DocsAutomator's site describes
Pricing notesBilled annually: Starter $10 per month (50 documents), Professional $19 (200), Business $30 (500), Scale $79 (2,000) and Unlimited $299 under a fair use policy. Monthly billing is $12, $24, $39, $99 and $349. Overage runs from $0.40 to $0.08 per document, capped by plan. Every plan includes unlimited automations, templates and team seats. The eSign add-on is $10 per month plus $0.30 to $0.60 per signature above 10; NGOs, nonprofits and education receive 50% off (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateUnlimited seats on every plan, with an MCP server that lets AI agents call locked templates directly

DocsAutomator generates documents from records in a team's existing tools and can then send them for signature, email them, or save them to Google Drive or OneDrive. A typical trigger is a deal marked won, a new row or a status change, after which the document is drafted, sent, followed up with reminders and filed back to the record with its audit trail.

Templates are created in Google Docs, Microsoft Word or PDF on the customer's own branding. A built-in agent can draft a template and map fields from a description. Batch runs, run history and live status are available for each document.

DocsAutomator offers an MCP server and REST API, and states that it works in Claude, Cursor, n8n and other MCP clients, with locked templates intended to keep output consistent when an AI agent supplies the data. Test mode is unlimited and needs no credit card. Pricing scales mainly by documents per month, while seats, automations and templates are unlimited on all plans.

Potential strengths

  • Lowest published entry price among the cloud tools here
  • Unlimited free testing without a credit card

Trade-offs

  • Overage on each plan is capped, so higher volumes need a plan change
  • E-signature is an add-on with per-signature fees

Consider forSoftware teams that want to turn existing JSON data into PDF and Office documents through an API, with the choice of European cloud hosting, self-hosting or AWS billing, as Carbone's site and pricing page describe
Pricing notesCloud plans: Free at €0 with 100 documents per month; Essential €29 per month or €26 billed annually with 1,000 documents per month and 500 templates; Advanced €159 per month or €149 billed annually with 20,000 documents per month, SSO and expert support. A document is counted per generation with under 1 MB of injected data. Self-hosted Fit and Unlimited licences are listed from €1,500 and €2,940 with a 30-day trial. AWS deployment is billed per document from $0.15 down to $0.008 (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateSame template language across cloud, on-premise, Docker and AWS, with a no-breaking-change guarantee and an official MCP server

Carbone is a report and document generator that merges JSON data into templates designed in familiar tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, LibreOffice or HTML, and outputs PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODS, CSV and HTML. The aim is to separate design from data so that non-developers can update templates without code changes.

Carbone can run in its hosted cloud, on European providers OVHCloud, Scaleway and BunnyCDN, on a customer's own servers, in Docker or through AWS with usage billing, and the company states that switching between these does not require codebase changes. Without a licence it runs as the free Community Edition; paid plans unlock the Enterprise Edition features, including dynamic images, colors, barcodes, charts, HTML, aggregations and PDF operations.

Integrations cover Zapier, Airtable, Bubble, n8n, Make and Odoo, and the Advanced plan adds an embeddable white-label Studio web component. An official MCP server and open-source Carbone Skill let AI assistants design templates and generate files. Carbone reports more than 800 paid customers in over 40 countries.

Consider forFreelancers, startups and growing companies that design document templates in HTML and CSS and generate invoices, reports or certificates through a REST API, as PDFMonkey's pricing page describes
Pricing notesFree with 20 documents per month; Starter €5 per month (300 documents); Pro €15 (3,000 documents, one extra collaborator); Pro+ €60 (5,000 documents); Premium €300 (60,000 documents). Yearly payment saves 10%, and prices exclude VAT and taxes. Boost packs add 1,000 documents for €5, pay-as-you-go overage is available on Pro+ and Premium, and a 30-day trial with 300 documents needs no credit card (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateLow entry price per document with retention settings from one day to unlimited depending on plan

PDFMonkey is a PDF generation API. Templates are written in HTML and CSS and rendered in a Chrome-based browser, so external fonts, images, JavaScript and charts work as they would on a web page. Documents such as invoices, reports and certificates are generated with a single REST API call, and unlimited templates are available on every plan.

Plans are sized by documents per month. When an account reaches its quota, the API returns a quota-exceeded error until the quota resets, unless the account buys a boost pack or has enabled pay-as-you-go billing on the Pro+ or Premium plans. Document retention runs from one day on the Free and Starter plans to unlimited on Pro+ and Premium, and data sent for generation is held in an encrypted database column and deleted with the document.

PDFMonkey suits teams comfortable with web templating rather than Word-based design. Buyers who need Word, Excel or PowerPoint output, or a business-user template editor, should compare the Office-template products on this page.

Potential strengths

  • Free tier and published low-cost plans
  • Encrypted storage of document data with deletion after the retention period

Trade-offs

  • PDF output only, with templates written in HTML and CSS
  • Free tier cannot load external images, fonts, CSS or JavaScript

Conga Composer

Consider forSales, legal, finance and operations teams that generate proposals, quotes, contracts, invoices and customer communications from Salesforce, ERP or other systems of record, as Conga's Composer page describes
Pricing notesQuote-based. Conga's pricing page asks buyers to request pricing and lists no figures for Composer (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluatePrebuilt template library for proposals, quotes, statements of work, account summaries and quarterly business reviews

Conga Composer is the document generation product in Conga's revenue lifecycle portfolio. Conga states that Composer produces more than 10 million documents per month for over 8,000 customers. It pulls data from Salesforce, ERP systems and other platforms, merges data from several sources into one document, and applies conditional sections, calculations, tables, charts and multiple currencies.

Output formats include PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and HTML email. Documents can be emailed, stored or downloaded, and batch processing generates large volumes, such as renewal notices, invoices and customer reports, on time-based or action-based triggers. A template library covers proposals, quotes, statements of work, account summaries, quarterly business reviews and year-end tax receipts.

Composer has a Salesforce connector and an API included in the standard web application, so it can be embedded in other CRMs, ERPs and systems of record. Generated documents can pass directly into Conga Sign. Conga's contract lifecycle product is compared separately on the StatWharf contract management page; this entry covers Composer only.

Potential strengths

  • Salesforce connector plus an API for other systems
  • Output to PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and HTML email

Trade-offs

  • No published pricing
  • No self-serve plan or trial details on the product page

Experlogix Document Automation

enterpriseexperlogix.com ↗
Consider forOrganizations running Microsoft Dynamics 365, Salesforce, SugarCRM or Power Platform that need document generation with approvals, compliance controls and country-specific rules, as Experlogix's document automation page describes
Pricing notesQuote-based. The Experlogix document automation page directs buyers to a demo and publishes no list price (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateOut-of-the-box connectors for Dynamics 365, Salesforce, SugarCRM and Power Platform, plus an open REST API

Experlogix Document Automation generates documents from CRM, ERP, form and API data and routes them through approval, e-signature, email, CRM records or storage. Experlogix also sells a CPQ product. Customer quotes on the document automation page include Sparebank, GroupHEALTH, which cites lower enrollment management costs, and Wealthcraft, which cites automated valuation reports.

The platform covers four stages. Connect brings in data from multiple systems through plug-and-play connectors for Dynamics 365, Salesforce, SugarCRM and Power Platform, or an open REST API. Create provides dynamic templates in a familiar editing environment, with reusable components, style guidelines and conditional logic. Generate produces documents on demand, on a schedule or in bulk in PDF, Word, Excel and other formats. Deliver adds approval workflows, encryption and timed distribution.

Experlogix positions the product as low-code, so business users can build templates and workflows without developers or outside consultants. AI tools support data capture, document creation and translation. The vendor emphasizes auditability and country-specific requirements, which suits regulated and multinational organizations.

Potential strengths

  • Built-in approval workflows and delivery to e-signature, email, CRM and storage
  • Reusable components and style guidelines across templates

Trade-offs

  • No published pricing
  • Positioned for complex enterprise workflows rather than a few simple templates

How to choose a vendor

Start from where the data lives

Teams whose records sit in Salesforce can choose a native package such as S-Docs, which processes documents inside the Salesforce org, or a connected product such as Conga Composer. Dynamics 365 shops can look at Experlogix Document Automation. Teams working from Airtable, Google Sheets, forms or a no-code stack are better matched to Documint, DocsAutomator, Docupilot or Formstack, while software teams generating documents from their own application usually call Docmosis, Carbone or PDFMonkey through an API.

Check how the vendor counts a document

Usage units differ enough to change the price comparison. Docmosis counts pages per month, Carbone counts each generation per megabyte of injected data, Documint sets an annual document allowance, and Docupilot counts delivered documents and stops generation at the plan limit. DocsAutomator charges a capped per-document overage, PDFMonkey sells 1,000-document boost packs, and S-Docs charges per Salesforce user with unlimited documents.

Separate generation from signature

Several products bundle or sell e-signature alongside generation: Formstack in its Suite, Docupilot and DocsAutomator as add-ons, Documint with envelope allowances per plan, and S-Docs in its e-Signature package. Buyers who already run a signature or contract platform can compare generation alone, while teams without one should price both together. Contract lifecycle suites are compared separately on the StatWharf contract management software page.

Frequently asked questions

What is document generation software?

Document generation software fills templates with data from a CRM, ERP, form, spreadsheet or application to produce finished documents such as quotes, proposals, contracts, invoices, statements and reports. Templates usually live in Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Excel, PDF or HTML, and the software handles merge fields, repeating tables, conditional sections and calculations. Most products also deliver the result by email, to storage or to an e-signature step.

How much does document generation software cost?

Eight of the ten vendors here publish prices. No-code cloud tools start at $10 per month for DocsAutomator, $29 for Docupilot and $39 billed annually for Documint, while Formstack's Suite starts at $250 per month. Developer engines range from free tiers at Carbone and PDFMonkey to Docmosis Cloud at $49 per month and self-hosted licences from $3,795. S-Docs charges $25 per user per month with a $3,000 annual minimum. Conga Composer and Experlogix quote on request.

What is the difference between document generation and e-signature software?

Document generation creates the document by merging data into a template. E-signature collects legally binding signatures on a finished document. Many generation tools hand off to a signature step: Formstack includes Sign in its Suite, S-Docs sells an e-Signature package, Documint includes envelopes, and Docupilot and DocsAutomator sell signature add-ons. Buyers with an existing signature provider can compare generation features on their own.

Which document generation tools work natively inside Salesforce?

S-Docs runs entirely inside Salesforce and stores templates and documents as Salesforce records. Formstack offers Salesforce Solutions with Salesforce-native generation, and Conga Composer has a Salesforce connector. Experlogix Document Automation connects to Salesforce as well as Dynamics 365 and SugarCRM. No-code tools such as Docupilot and DocsAutomator can reach Salesforce data through integration platforms, but processing happens outside the Salesforce org.

Which products suit developers embedding document generation in an application?

Docmosis, Carbone and PDFMonkey are designed to be called from an application through an API. Docmosis and Carbone also offer self-hosted editions for teams that cannot send data to an external service, and Docmosis provides an embeddable Java library. PDFMonkey uses HTML and CSS templates, while Docmosis and Carbone use Word, LibreOffice and other Office-format templates that non-developers can edit.

Is there free document generation software?

Carbone offers a free cloud tier with 100 documents per month and an open-source Community Edition. PDFMonkey has a free plan with 20 documents per month, and S-Docs has a free Salesforce edition limited to 150 generated documents. Docupilot and Documint offer 14-day trials, DocsAutomator offers unlimited test mode, and Formstack's free trial covers its Forms product.

How do vendors count documents for billing?

Counting rules vary. Docmosis bills by pages per month, Carbone counts each generation per megabyte of injected data, and Documint counts each document as one merge regardless of length. Docupilot counts delivered documents, PDFMonkey and DocsAutomator count generated documents per month, and S-Docs charges per Salesforce user with unlimited documents on the paid edition. Buyers should estimate monthly volume and page length before comparing plans.

How was this comparison compiled?

StatWharf Editorial selected ten document generation products with live product pages, covering no-code cloud tools, developer engines and CRM-centred enterprise platforms.
